The only thing they did wrong was not trying to see if they could use the ship's engines to rescue pink. Even then, they knew nothing about the ship so it's excusable. Though maybe they should have pooled their rocket pack fuel so that the rescuer would have enough to get back.

The thing that shitted me about the EVA scenes was the constant use of the suit thrusters-- it's Space.

Go in the right direction, get enough speed to reach the target before your air runs out, and then just coast along in frictionless travel.

I'm sure the police searched during the first weeks but searching space with no clues is an expensive and pointless endeavour so they dropped it. There are probably other contextual factors at play too but we haven't seen enough of the setting to be sure.

Usually missing kid cases get archived/cold after a year of no developments. The show's scenario would imho be taken as an abduction, too (no evidence of death, etc.) where police effort would be expected to return the victims quickly. Giving up after one months searching-- probably another Japaneseism, where their cops are known for only pursuing crime when they already know they'll get a career-improving result.
