Pretty much. That's always been the series' problem. The ones that try their hardest to grasp at their storytelling potential almost invariably get crippled by this.

I've actually been wondering about that. Do series like Star Trek, The Terminator, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The Matrix, Alien, GoT etc. start up or even (Still) exist to sell merchandise, or does the merchandise help keep the series going, or what?

They're safe bets. You don't get an Avatar grossing the highest box office of all time but what you do get is reliable money flowing in. Studios count on these products to make them float while they make riskier bets with things like Avatar on one end and Ghost in the Shell on the other.

Star Trek wasn't profitable when it first aired and its 5 season plan got cut into 3 seasons. I've only seen TOS (and TAS) but I can't see anything in it that's particularly made to sell merchandise. Even then, good toy-ads can exist. It's just that Gundam takes itself too seriously when it's, in the end, about robots fighting each-other, has bad voice-acting and bad animation on top of it simply being political drivel that's the same in every war-themed story.

Gundam is just lame. Star Trek is genuinely interesting especially considering its age. Just my 2 cents.

Modern movies are made to cash-in on nostalgia. Merchandise isn't the main source of income. So in that sense, not even Star Wars is a toy-ad. It makes more than enough money even without the merch.

What's so special about Gundam anyhow?

Star Trek was a huge risk when it first aired but by TNG that risk had subsided and there were movies, toys, and spinoffs that last until this day. Notice that all the spinoffs took a TNG approach rather than TOS. It was safe and the formula worked. Now anytime you need more money just open up the Star Trek spigot and the money will flow. There's a tipping point between when a work is experimental and when it's a reliable workhorse, Toys are just icing on the cake. Anime however have toys in mind as a major pusher of sales. There's a reason Bandai is a huge name on production committees. There's other considerations for merchandise like music but it's mainly about the goods and the video release of the show.

>What's so special about Gundam anyhow?

It was the first anime the whole family could watch together so it became a massive hit. In hindsight 40 years later it's not very good but that's because it was one of the first to be revolutionary in the industry. So many other franchises and even its own franchise has built upon that success. Combine that with (I know the pre 00s fags will mob me for this) technological and technique in both visual and written storytelling and it's the difference between a man using a sling and a man using a predator drone.

>toy commercial

It was supposed to be a more grounded show about human-sized powered armor and succeeded even though the executives tried assraping it into a mecha toy commercial. The writers rolled with the executives' punches, filling their retarded demands in ways that actually fit the show, and in the end Gundam 0079 fucking sucked at selling toys. What did sell were formerly overlooked model kits (the popular ones were usually scaled-up versions of the old powered armor suits) and after that the Gundam crew was left to do whatever the fuck they wanted.

Is Gundam worth getting into? Sure. Even if it sells lots of merch these days, that merch is backed by a bunch of good shows (mostly the older stuff) and shitposting material.

Good suggestion because it gives you a good idea about the series themes with some of the least clunky episodes.

Other option is watching the 3 0079 movies.

>>105252

00's movie is one of the worst things in the franchise.

>>105283

Mecha has a bigger problem than those series because it has to design mecha. On those series the investment is all front loaded. You make the sets and the outfits and everything else is cheap to do. If you want an extra cheap episode you take an actor and pick out a set of clothes from your wardrobe department and that's all the investment needed. Throw a few of those into a full series and once in a while a monster and it's costing you more to feed people than it is to make the TV series. In the case of mecha you need someone to design a robot and a way to make that robot into a toy of some kind. Modern anime goes for the Hercules style of series instead where you design the human cast and introduce a new one once in a while and that's it. It's bare bone but the figurines sell as well as any non-gundam model kit.

>>105304

Gundam wasn't even close to the first family anime. What made Gundam appeal was autists catching reruns and buying up the model kits. Model kits are what made Gundam a success.

>>105314

I've done that. Some series are unwatchable junk like Wing and Victory.

The original gundam was supposed to be space only use mecha. The novels tell a very different more adult story. The original story is more about how even if humans evolved for space they would still struggle to communicate with each other.

Niggers spouting 'Gundam just being a toy commercial' meme apparently can't seem to understand that just because Bandai saw opportunity to merchandise the shit out of it, didn't mean Tomino and Sunrise didn't see an opportunity to take narrative risks with the show. In Gundam's case, those risks involved having a show where the giant robots are treated like any other war machine as well as having morally grey characters on both sides. Now today, that doesn't seem unique at all, but in 1979 it stood in stark contrast to the dozens of monster-of-the-week, super robot shows that were way more overt toy commercials than Gundam was at the time.

If you think Gundam was solely made to sell toys, congrats for being a normalfag who gets their opinions from ANN and MAL. I'm sure your lack of appreciation and history of the medium will be more tolerated there.

>>105253

>The ones that try their hardest to grasp at their storytelling potential almost invariably get crippled by this.

SEED isn't the one with bad episodes. It's got an excess of stock footage and a bullshit ass pull explained in the manga but that's about it. There is no reason someone can't watch SEED and the 0079 movies at the same time.

But you're clearly retarded when all you do is scream cuck at people and can't figure out a series made in the 90s with 1 throwaway scene leading into a series made 10 years previous is going to be a completely different style of show. You watch Zeta for Char and Kamille, not because Anaheim did stupid shit with Gundams (which they always do)

Next you will be crying Narrative ruins F-91 because it's a side story showing how utterly fucked the universe is and everyones playing chuckle fucks with Newtype technology they don't understand.

That love triangle is precisely why it's so shit. If it were set up at the beginning, ok fine. But no, they had to insult the audience's intelligence but shoehorning it in at the last minute, with flimsy foreshadowing being that "Nina gets nervous because she's watching people shes loves fight", nevermind that her nervousness was preious supposed to be an identifier that Nina is a civilian that doesn't how bad combat can get. And Kou being a limp autist doesn't help either.

It has some great animation that's wasted on shit writing.

>'t figure out a series made in the 90s with 1 throwaway scene leading into a series made 10 years previous is going to be a completely different style of show.

Nigger what? The reason you watch in production order is because Gundam, much like any long running series anime or otherwise, has prequels that despite taking place earlier in the timeline usually assume you have some working knowledge of the franchise itself. And the only you can get that is by watching the shows that were made first, when there wasn't hundreds of hours of lore established.

Kira also grows as a pilot over time. SEED's mostly hated because Destiny makes Kira so annoying. In SEED he's a bit too UNDERSTANDING but he's far from the worst the series has at this point Kio is way way worse

Rewriting the OS isn't such an ass pull as you make it seem. Kira was secretly working on the MS in college. You can see in the office where he studies there's a robot they're working on. The natural OS is terrible but Kira has the experience to quickly type up a basic movement set to allow him to operate it. It doesn't matter if it's clunky because he's immune to the Ginns attacks either way. It makes about as much sense as Amuro flicking through a manual does and then doing complex movements with the hands. The Gundam was primitive too and way harder to control than the Strike was due to Amuro not being autistic yet while Kira was a super autist and depending on how cannon you take Newtypes in SEED Kira was already on par with Amuro's autism and had experience with mobile suit development

Not going to defend SEED to the death but it's not as much as an asshole as it seems. Same way everyone says Shinn is a whiny bitch yet he's the only person willing to stand up to Orb and their bullshit. No one else called Orb out on their policies until Shinn met the representative and tore into her.

SEED and UC are more or less tied for my favourite timeline. SEED is flawed but it has it's merits too. Same way UC does. I'm willing to look past Kira to see an interesting world with some great designs. It's not like 00 where everyones a fag and child rape is a standard part of the timeline

>I can forgive my friend for what he has done and we can fight to prevent it happening again

>Not everyone is redeemable and some people will need to die for my ideals to be felt

If you take Destiny's bullshit out of it Kira grows a lot as a character. He ends up a mental wreck who wants to be left alone the same way Amuro did. The real problem is Destiny fucks it all up. But even Destiny makes it clear that Kiras in the wrong and he's getting good people killed because of his actions. Heine dies because of Kira and Athrun loses his shit with him for it.

So I accidentally watched the Red Comet origin miniseries first not knowing it was part of a greater story and I'm pretty sure it ruined me because I'm now trying to trudge through the MSG main series and its so much worse thats its not even funny. I'm not even talking about the visuals which I knew would be worse the entire plot and sequence of events doesn't really follow, you don't really understand why they are doing anything or even what specifically they are trying to accomplish the MCs just seem to drift from area to area with fights thrown in every couple episodes.

Casval is also a much better character than that fag Amuro who can't seem to decide if he wants to be gunho shonen protag or go full Shinji crying in his room for no apparent reason. Even when Casaval was being an absolute bastard you at least got a clear sense of what hes doing and why. What's strange is that I don't mind an extreme lack of realism when it comes to fantasy and mahou shoujo shows. I don't even mind a certain lack of realism in sci-fi.

I think what bothers me about mecha is the contradiction between the veneer of gritty realism and the fundamental absurdity of the design concepts. It feels like a stupid mistake rather than an intentional feature of the universe they're portraying. Nothing about the setting explains why they'd want to build human-shaped spaceships. The only justification seems to be "it's cool", but to me it just feels corny.

This is why the best mecha is steampunk fantasy mecha.

Thing is, if you made mecha shows realistic, then you'd have to take out all of the robots. A realistic mecha show is Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Mechs do make some sense for land warfare. Walking is a much better way to cover rough terrain than rolling. A mech could cover much more varied terrain than any tank.

There are two caveats however:

1. Mechs make zero sense in space. You don't want limbs in space - you want thrusters. All the limbs are dead weight, not to mention the energy wasted in powering the motors to move the joints.

2. Anything bigger than a house is completely useless. The square-cube law means that you need thicker and thicker limbs (or stronger materials), which in turn increases the mass and power consumption. Very large mechs would just collapse under their own weight, as would most kaijuu.

That's just a tank with legs. It wouldn't resemble a human form.

Yeah, I was using "mech" in the most general sense.

Mechs with humanoid proportions will always look more like cheap plastic toys than serious combat vehicles. It's even worse if they have human-like "faces" or wield melee weapons.

>Gunbuster

I'm watching that shit right now and it's terrible. Yeah, the animation is beautiful, along with the audio, but fuck all happens with the story and nearly ALL the stuff we want to see happens off screen.

Following that, most mechs in Gundam look spindly as fuck. Their arms look like sticks, which is why the few exceptions like the Titus and the Gouf are infinitely cooler. Motherfuckers look chunky as hell.

Yeah I don't remember why I engraved 9th into memory when it's called 8th. I think it's because I started watching it at around 9 PM while reminding myself something about this specific hour. It's an intricate type of autism.
