Ignore anyone who tries to be an ebin troll about the animation quality or looks, because there's quite a bit of difference between the two seasons.
>very small-timer studio with toaster computers, small staff, several amateur seiyuu
>series riding on controversy or being observed because of it, bigger budget, artstyle now looks more similar to the original artist's
We overlooked the quality of the first season at some point because it looked like they were doing an effort with what little they had, and because of the characters and story. It felt really original because the angles, poses and storytelling felt really different from the standard fare of most anime. Hell, the OP has very few of the usual tropes that most openings have and that go into montages. No Serval on a cliff while the wind is blowing, no crying Kaban and turning to reach something, no unrelated fight scene, no wacky supporting staff being wacky, etc, and the same goes to the series itself.
Regardless, I will watch the second season but won't shit on it just because it exists, if there's some worth, that's fine, but that doesn't mean I'm not forgetting the past debacle.

No, they don't. We aren't in the mid 2000s anymore.
The popular male action MC archetype in recent years has been strong-overpowered, Kirito, Ains, Saitama and Toyohisa are all examples of this. If they follow this trend, and if Kyururu-"chan" is a boy, then I can see him just being shy because of amnesia.
Kyururu even has hetrochromia which is a sign for a strong かっこいい character. If they want to completely go down this route, then they should make Kyururu a human-cerulean hybrid created through a "bug" in the Sandstar.

Bandai and/or its subsidaries are part of 31 committees. Bandai owns the animation studios Sunrise and Actas. They also own 10% from Toei Animation and 49% from Tsuburaya Productions.
Kadokawa and/or its subsidaries are part of 41 committees. Kadokawa owns the majority (53%) of the new animation studio Engi, it is also owned partially by Sammy (40%, pachinko machine maker). Other notable subsidaries of Kadokawa are From Software and Enterbrain.

It is true Kemurikusa doesn't look like much of anything beyond something generic. But that's the thing, Kemono Friends didn't appear any goddamn different at the time. Look at the winter 2017 chart and tell me with a straight face KF doesn't look anything else than complete bottom-tier.
<The anime's story takes place in Japari Park, a "gigantic integrated zoo." In the zoo, due to the mysterious "sand star" substance, the animals start turning into human-shaped creatures called Animal Girls. Japari Park is a place where many people visit and have fun at, but one day a lost child wanders into the park. The lost child starts a journey to return, but because so many Animal Girls join in on the quest it becomes an unexpected grand adventure.
Look at this "cute girls but they're animals" plus Dora the Explorer bullshit. Complete with the ensemble pose with CGI girls, the only thing this inspired was pity. Typically the sort of dishwater you'd air late night.
I wouldn't have given it the time of day if I wasn't between episodes of Demi-chan and didn't have a substantial interest for animals. I legit expected an educational kid's show, and for the first episode, that's exactly what it goddamn looked like. I only watched episode 2 out of pure inertia. It was only at the collapsed bridge that I thought "hold on a second, what? This is intriguing".
In short, not expecting much is exactly where you want to be for Kemurikusa. Sure, a high-concept Tatsuki anime would be interesting, but there is something to be said about playing to his strengths when directly competing with Kadokawa Friends.

I wouldn't assume a writer's competence to be anywhere near the picture. The writer is tightly controlled by the producers. Firing Tatsuki could have no other motive than executives taking direct control because they thought they were better suited to turn KF into a trillion-yen franchise than some no-name studio. They stuck by that decision even after an outcry so massive the head of the whole consortium stepped in. So the writer's talent or lack thereof is kind of out the window here. This is run by a committee.
So while the committee is clearly trying to recapture the tone to assuage fans this is still KF, why would they settle for a beat-for-beat retread ? This would obviously lead to them being called out. More of the same doesn't work when you're rebooting shit. The takeover is so widely known Kadokawa just cannot brush that off, they have to put their own spin both for audience expectations and executive pride of whoever fired Tatsuki to take control.
Of course, them being complete cowards and just redoing the same shit while trying to sweep everything under the rug isn't strictly out of the question, but one, even the most oblivious executive should be able to see that shit ain't gonna fly, and two, Kyururu is sporting heterocromia pupils so it's already more special than Kaban. There is no fucking way this is a trivial stylistic choice. Not for a series they damn well know is known for visual storytelling.

Alright.
It wasn't bad nor good.
I like the new Cerulean designs and hope for more variations. You have to remember that Ceruleans are inanimate objects hit by sandstar, so Cerulean cameras are a good idea.
The 5fps animation was horrible and the sugois were forced.
What bothers me the most so far is the way of dealing with threats.
In season 1 Kaban was told she was useless but then always found a solution through her ideas and superior intelligence.
In this episode they just ran away from the Ceruleans or killed them in one hit.
What happened to the weak spot? What happened to the creative way of fighting them?
That jump scene was also a waste of time. It established pretty much nothing. Or was this this season's idea of showing the audience that human friends are bad at jumping?

Really hated that part. Unless there is a story reason for this, it comes off as a slap in the face to fans of S1. The whole episode felt like a corporate takeover that rehashes the previous season. The technically better 3d models, though those ceruleans seem like they were modeled worse than the first. Added another Friend to the adventure like a sidekick. That introductory music for Serval. Those callbacks. The upgrade from vehicle to monorail.
The whole thing comes off as disingenuous like they were trying to create their own version of season 1, even though it was that original season and the person behind it that got people talking about Kemono Friends. I hope they diverge from the first before we get an inferior copycat of the first season. Fans, true fans, want something different and not have our nostalgia egos stroked by something we've seen before. This feels as soulless and corporate as I expected. it diverged plenty already, just not in the basic plot structure. Japari Park feels completely different in ways that make zero sense. More technology, yet it's in the future. The animal traits are muted (Friends attack with punches, Duck's just straight up emulating a human profession like many Friends in the mobage, yet her special skill for escaping the cerulean isn't explained at all, no zookeeper interviews), Ceruleans have crazy shapes instead of the simple ones.
Overall, if you've read anything about the game, S2 feels much closer to it than S1. And the game took place while the park was about to open. Everyone's freaking out about the Kaban cameo, but this fundamental discrepancy screams Kadokawa not giving a fuck much louder as far as I'm concerned.

Two things that irked me: Kyururu quickly saying "nah, I'm not an animal Friend", yet still being an amnesiac feels very inconsistent. Repeating the same beats as season 1 could be seen as lazy, but they could've done something different, like all saying she's an animal but her expressing doubts or even having comedic moments with new Friends that she can't fly or run fast, then deducing that she might be something else. Maybe they did it to put Kaban out of the way, because mentioning a disappeared/retconned Kaban at the half or later half would've made people angrier?
Related to this, how they didn't do the "everyone can do different things, so don't worry". Maybe Kyururu is amnesiac and already has doubts she's not an animal Friend, but they could've handled this in a different manner but reminded Kyururu that she might have other useful skills.
Also if they already deduced that Kyururu may be a human, then she should've shown her innate higher intelligence or skill, not just for drawing. The only thing she did was a stroke of luck of pressing the button for the monorail, while they did remember that Serval is a dumb cat and tried to cutely slap the door. I hope next episode handles things better, because it feels all over the place despite some good things.

Judging by how the mountain no longer has Sandstar and it's all in that lab, you could think that the weird spindly look of the Ceruleans was because they evolved, but also that the Friends have become wary of them and their new shapes consumes a lot of their inner fuel, do now they're emaciated and quite weak because even Serval can defeat a large one and they don't even have their weak spot. That doesn't excuse the poor rendering, they could've rendered it better while still giving that weird look or how they adapted to the shape of cameras.
No.897919

I wouldn't say you're overthinking it, but you are definitely trying to see an innate logic where there is none. S1 had consistency, it did away with a lot of the fancier elements of the game to make everything more natural, more animalistic, more primal. That gave it a solid underlying logic you could analyze and extrapolate.
This shit takes place after S1, yet has Japari Sodas, food trucks, monorails, bigger buildings, fancier, more technologic-looking ceruleans, you fucking name it. The only way it would even begin to make sense is if Kaban got humanity back, restored the Park for a while, improved it significantly, then she died and Japari Park promptly got wrecked again.
Or you could apply Occam's razor and just conclude no attention to detail or consistency is anywhere near the picture and that they're just going back to the initial plan of a dumb not-kancolle where the Friends are just human girls doing human jobs, with all the convenient facilities for generic CGDCT shenanigans. Right up until the last third of the season, where it will probably go full epic twists and grimdark because, while they don't have a coherent vision, they do have a checklist to fill.

The game had crazy cerulean shapes. In S1, the ceruleans were a menace that looked more primal to fit the theme better, but eventually explained they came from inanimate objects. This was done to make human presence on the island inherently dangerous to the Friends and tell a story of what happened to the place.
The chucklefucks in charge of this just took it as an excuse to make them into crazy-looking shit again because a camera-looking cerulean is interesting visually and convenient to pull some suckers into thinking S2 might have worth. Except, oh wait, they're not even fine visually if because they look like 90's CGI.

I wonder if Panda mentioning Friends looking for a human refers to Pangolin and Armadillo. I see that Kyururu doesn't have the red feather, so maybe the detectives will have it, or maybe it's a way to tie Arai-san and Fennec in, though I'm sure those two will be more seasoned adventurers and will help out during an episode. Also,
>alpaca, wakaran and otter have appeared in previews
>no hippo for the first episode
Profound sadness. I'd like to see more of the big players returning for the previews. One detail I like here is their animal sounds or squeaks whenever they jump or get upset, it's adorable.

2nd ep is worse than the first one, literally nothing happens, no advance.
S1E2 accomplishment:
Build a river bridge from the materials at hand, throw a fucking bus over it.
S2E2 accomplishment:
Build a playground out of the ready to use "playgrounds for dummies toolkit", lose it to ceruleans moments later.
So far it stays in line with the way things were handled in ep1. Where characters grew up to overcome the difficulties in S1, the difficulties were scaled down to fit the characters in S2 (see the discount canyon for discount Kaban in ep1).

I don't have a problem with that, you can have one episode that is more about their friendship than advancing on their quest, like the PPP episode. What miffed me was that the next clue was pretty much at the end of the episode right when they were closing the doors on the monorail, almost like they forgot to add a new clue and slapped it at the very last minute. Comparing to the PPP episode, the penguins did tell them a little bit earlier that there was a way to possibly contact humans, not when Boss was already revving the Bus up.
They other thing that felt cheap was how they didn't show the discarded playground pieces that were blocked with the bamboo. For a second there I thought that Kyururu was gonna find that piece and tell them to gather what they see, or at least showed you the whole are with scattered pieces. It could've added a funny scene earlier on if Red Panda guided them but completely ignored the scattered pieces and came back to the same spot and now Kyururu noticed.

But S1 was more than that. It was about following Kaban and finding out not only about the Friends of the week and the ingenuity that Kaban had but also the specter hanging over of where the other humans have gone. Yet they kept the dark undertones, even overdid it with some designs. You fucks did not expect it: one of the major fears of the Tatsuki crowd was that they would have sanitized the show for babies, without anything dark. Now the next fear is that Tatsuki will only be remembered for the wonky tech.

Call me slowpoke, but I just finished watching season 1 and I have more questions than answears. Maybe the Manga or the games give more info.
Why Kaban refers to herself as boku?
Why Friends never noticed they can remove their clothes?
Why male animals have human female appearence? FUTANARI
Who makes Japari buns? Are the Lucky Beasts?
Did they "close" the mountain to not have more eruptions?
Powers that Sandstar have: Create life even from small parts of organic material, anthropomorphizing animals, having wildly different climates very close to each other. Really convinient plot device.
Was the Sandstar created by humans? Are Friends only created by Sandstar?
I liked the characters and the overall style, it's so simple and charming, but if I think about the plot too much it spoils the fun.

-Boku means self or I.
-Friends are animals personified, them not knowing about clothes is to show this and to display Kaban's human traits in contrast.
-Muh animu: it was supposed to be a popular mobile game, after all.
-Lucky beasts grow the ingredients for japari buns right next to the proffessor's library.
-Eruptions will still occur, but a certain volatile sandstar that creates extra dangerous ceruleans is contained (the stuff that fed the big one).
-Nanomachines, son.
-Probably not (humans were studying it) and most likely yes.
For me, the mystery was part of the fun; a very wide range of enticing possibilities in a world you want to explore.

>Friends are animals personified
Yes, but their clothes never get dirt or torn apart? They never noticed the layer of fabric above their bodies? In the last episode, Kaban gloves and pantyhose(?) grow back, so aren't the clothes part of their body? It's like you can take your hair from your head like a wig, put it back and it still grows like nothing ever happened.

Boku is a very subservient masculine term in that only young boys actively use it, so it's generally considered a younger/slightly more masculine form as compared to the neuter Watashi. Girls can use boku as well, it's not like it's Ore or something. Usually adult women would never use boku, but young girls will use boku when trying to form a certain "air" around them (not always a tomboy thing but sometimes a subservient role). Kaban doesn't know what she is probably when she first appears, and boku is shorter and more brief (and more importantly requires less pronunciation/can be said more quietly) than watashi when she's clearly hesitating to speak. It could just be they needed to lip sync and boku is easier to lip sync than watashi.

Don't you fucking dare invoke peace when the very existence of S2 is an declaration of war, and its extremely low quality, animation and screenplay-wise, a mockery for the fallen. Who exactly do you think is falling for your narrative of S2 did nothing wrong when the animation is even worse CGI than Berserk, the writing is a poorly done copy of S1 checklist style, without any of the sense of mystery and wonder? When the Friends aren't even Friends, just generic uguu~ stereotypes with only slapped on animal traits instead of said traits being the core of their personalities?
You garbage compactor of a person, can you reject your self-worth hard enough to defend Kyururu, supposed protagonist of this apparently equally worthy new season, when the first thing he says to Serval is "lol fuck off, I ain't no animal" and then appeals to first graders with crayon drawings ?
Do you think this so called season 2 automatically compares to Kemono Friends because there's an ebin creepy threat introduced without subtelty or restraint ? Unless your cortex is literally made of pudding, you recognize the difference between Kemono Friend's mostly left to elements world with some understated indications it was once an elaborate park, and S2 being all food trucks, monorails, secret facilities, creepy screams oh my from episode fucking one.
Kemono Friends was a magical time witnessing lightning in a bottle and every anon agreeing how charming it was except for maidragon fags who demanded greater recognition. Everything since S2 began is either kvetching about how awful this is or faggots doing their level best to disparage Kemono Friends and dismissing any innate, and fully deserved, hatred of the S2 that robbed a genuine artist of his work for corporate's sake, as nasty/butthurt trorrs. To the wastes of oxygen indulging in such a petty endeavor, go ahead, enjoy your mockery of a season. You'll know it's mediocre shit every step of the way, but who cares when you can feel a teensy bit warmer fighting against artistic integrity and for corporate interest if it can rile up someone who still has the soul you lost years ago?
The short and sweet of it is, you don't get to pretend S2 plays remotely in the same league as Kemono Friends. You don't get to act like you're the reasonable one asking for KF fans to calm down, and you sure as shit don't get to invoke the lighthearted tone of the original to shield yourself from rightful scorn. You're defending corporate killing an artist and shitting in your mouth. NTR fetishists are übermensch compared to you.

Did Tatsuki make the series all by himself? Was he responsible for the charadesign - certainly not, seeing the abysmal results with Kemurikusa. How about the music, did he write it? There is no evidence linking Tatsuki to anything but the shitty animation. The darker elements he copypasted from the Kemurikusa prototype, which again weren't solely his work.
Firing him was shitty corporativism, but I don't share in the victim mentality of SJWs. Am I supposed to believe this guy is a saint and not just another nip who would do the same to his lessers? It's dirty to invoke mob mentality, I will judge this show on its own merits.

KF2 and Kemurikusa is like having divorced parents or a split band. They worked great together but now you can feed the flaws in each other, this sucks. And with the 3-episode rule, now I'm unsure just how much Kemurikusa could improve. I don't really have a problem with it overall, but Wakaba's voice is seriously grating and I consider to have high tolerance for that. It doesn't help that he's constantly going WOWEE-ZOWIE at everything, that could be charming in smaller doses of a voice that isn't so damn grating.
KF2 will try to repeat the same beats but at the same time differently, but it just feels shoddy and bare minimum. Could've easily won if they used more budget and talent just to spite Tatsuki/YYZ, but they couldn't even do that. They have the Friends as prisoners and that's terrible.
