Imagine if you went blind, /a/. You can't see anime any more and allegedly you probably never learned moon runes. You will never lay eyes on your waifu again (until you go to Gensokyo). You can't read mangos any more and at best you'll get a machine speaker to read LNs to you. What would you do, /a/? What can you do? I know I keep my shotgun next to my bed, but I'd probably be treated as an invalid and have it taken away from me so this thought scares me deeply. Is there a life of Chinese shadow puppets waiting for one if they become blind?

Spend a few years learning how to take the most advantage of being blind, and by the time that's boring surgery will have probably advanced enough to either repair or replace my eyes.

Well thankfully I'd still have my extremely large collection of Nip music to get me to wherever terrible end my life would have.

This actually brings to mind the possibility of listening to many, many audio books as well.

Furthermore, my last attempt at life before killing myself would involve deep meditation and mastering the art of lucid dreaming. Because if you could lucid dream every day not only would you be able to see your waifu, but you would be able to BE WITH your waifu.

And who knows, maybe >>810882 is right and it shan't be too long before they can augment your vision with cyborg eyes.

I think I'll just go off myself then. I don't want to deal with not being able to read manga and shitpost on imageboards, seeing as they've made my life a little bearable. Going blind will only drive me to despair at this point.

Though >>810882 is a good approach, if a little naive in my opinion, and surgery will likely to make improvements in that field, perhaps I can hold on for a little longer.

If I didn't kill sudoku, I wouldn't even know what to do with myself if I went blind. Everything I do is visual.

My career plans would be out the window. I need to be able to do math, which would probably be almost impossible, read and write code, which would be possible but very difficult, and read through the literature in a way that lets me quickly identify the useful information, which would be very inefficient with text-to-speech.

In my free time, no more anime, manga, video games, cute 2d girls, or guns. With text-to-speech I might still be able to shitpost on imageboards, just without the image part, but that's small consolation, especially since I wouldn't be able to watch or read the things everyone else was talking about.

Are your thoughts in text? Are words basically kanji to you since you have no understanding of pronunciation?

 No.811141

I wonder, how would a blind person navigate a modern website.

Sure, some old HTML-only sites are quite easy, since the page is structured top to bottom with linebreaks, tables and such things.

With JavaScript and CSS things become difficult for a simple mechanism to read, and since there are not that many blind people into programming I highly doubt that there is some kind of AI that automatically figures out what kind of site you are on and what stuff you would like to have read at a first glance.

Sure. if your waifu suddenly went blind you would do all those things for her, like read her news articles, or go to her secret favorite board and promise to never ever tell anyone she browses that place, then read a thread to her, describe new reaction pictures, and post her own replies while she blushes and tries to tone down everything she says because she doesn't want you to know she uses words like "faggot" "nigger" and anything else of the sort on a regular basis online.

But what if YOU went blind, without a waifu to help you out? You would all of a sudden not be able to browse this place, and someone would have to set up your PC to run off voice commands in the first place.

A display that works kind of like braille, but with different heights of bumps for light/dark colours could be used to display black and white pictures, but how would you deal with colours?

Simple maths would also turn into quite the problem, since you can't just take a piece of paper and write down your calculations like you used to. Writing texts would also turn into a pain in the ass, since you would need to type it out and every time you are not quite sure if some sentence sounds right instead of rereading it you would have to set your text to speech to read the last sentence, and the TTS would also butcher any pronunciation of foreign nip names. I am sure some blind authors have figured out neat ways to make this easier, but it would still be not as simple as reading it yourself.

Fuck, you wouldn't even be able to drive a car anymore. I used to live in a small village without even a bus station. That would pretty much be a death sentence. You would have to rely on neighbors or delivery services to get food. Cooking would be a fucking nightmare. I know Lilly was described as quite the good chef, but I doubt that aspect was quite realistic. How are you supposed to experiment with your recipies? You can't just look into the oven to judge how much longer a pie/piece of meat needs. Even setting the temperature on your stove would require a click-sound mechanism so you know what you set it to.

Hell, how would I even do sports? You can't run as a blind person, not as far as I am aware at least. You can lift weights, but what is muscle without cardio?

I could probably deal with losing a limb or two, even with being scarred forever, but eternal blindness? Never being able to see anything ever again? I love to go hiking, even at night. I seen some amazing things so far. I admire people who have seen true beauty and can now live with the knowledge that they will never see anything ever again, but I doubt I could be nearly as strong.

Honestly, I would consider sudoku at that point.

As would the entire DIC. That or turn to sculpting (which is 3DPD) or copper carvings or something more plastic.

Artists in general would be fucked. Have you looked at the paintings of some blind artists? It's like their skills suddenly drop to 0, because they do. They literally have to relearn everything, they can no longer work with colours properly, unless they remember what a certain colour looks like describe it with real world references and have someone else pick said colour for them. Imagine what kind of trouble rin would go through if she not only couldn't describe her colours, but also HAD to have someone pick and mix them for her, without being able to comment on what they look like.

>but how would you deal with colours?

From what I understand, blind people understand the concept of color, but for them it's like a cone or a triangle with the major colors along it.

>Simple maths would also turn into quite the problem, since you can't just take a piece of paper and write down your calculations like you used to.

I can't speak for other anons, but I know I did everything up to calculus-based physics in my head, and I only started writing stuff down at that point because I was dealing with multiple variables. I imagine you'd get really good at mental math.

>Writing texts would also turn into a pain in the ass, since you would need to type it out and every time you are not quite sure if some sentence sounds right instead of rereading it you would have to set your text to speech to read the last sentence

Braille keys and a program that reports as you type each word would probably be the easiest way to fix this. It'd be annoying at first, but would become pretty straightforward. If you learn proper typing "typewriter" skills and not hover-hands standard typing, you will pretty much never misspell words and type much faster after getting the hang of it unless you don't know how to spell them in the first place.

>I know Lilly was described as quite the good chef, but I doubt that aspect was quite realistic.

Blind people tend to just rely on their other senses. Biggest thing they have issues cooking is meat since they can't see it/pre-taste it.

Words are basically kanji for everyone, you just don't think about it. When you read, assuming you're an experienced reader, you look at and recognize the shapes of entire words instead of reading letter-by-letter. This is especially true for English where the spelling of the word has nothing do to with the pronunciation of the word most of the time.

I'd lose my work first, but I wouldn't despair and focus on trying to make use of my hearing. I'd keep listening to lots of Japanese shit like today, learn more and use my knowledge in foreign languages to become an interpreter. However, if I were to become deaf, it's probably instant seppuku.

It would sweep my life from underneath me. I'd lose my job, I'd lose the ability to see everything I love, lose any useful talent, I'd need to move in with parents until I grow old and die and everything would just fucking suck. Drive myself mad from seeing nothing but black and eventually swallow a bullet.

I knew a Japanese dude from my high school a decade ago who was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease in his freshman year. He sucked it up and still walked to high school every morning. He graduated on a wheelchair without the ability to move his legs, neck, and arms. Fast forward a few years later and the next thing I learned about him was that his parents were keeping him alive in the hospital. He couldn't talk, blink, move, or anything. Living vegetable. He had been staring at the same hospital ceiling for 4 years doing fuck all but hospital visits. His mom would put on Mazinger every week or so because it was his favorite anime and would show it to him on a projector pointed to where he stared at the ceiling. He was trapped and beaten senseless by time into a state beyond being jaded. He died 2 more years later. There still is no cure for his disease.

>blind monk

That reminded me of something that is vaguely connected to this thread.

There is an old monastery close-ish to the place I grew up. One day we had a schooltrip there, and an actual blind monk gave us a tour. One of us asked him why he became a monk and he said it was because he turned blind after an accident. He said he got very sad and needed a safe place where someone would be near him all the time.

We asked him all sorts of questions about how it was to be blind and what monks do most of the time (turns out they don't do a lot, besides pray and community work). When we went to the prayer room one of us asked him who the guy on the stained glass window with the book and keys was. He answered that it "sounds" like St. Peter, but he wasn't sure.

Back then most of this stuff went over my head. Guess I was too young to understand, but holy shit you brought back some memories.

Becoming some kind of monk is probably one of the best options if you suddenly turned blind. Not only is suicide ruled out, because there will literally always be someone nearby, but you can devote a lot of your time to some sort of skill you want to pick up or whatever. You must still do community work and such, and clean and cook in the monastery, but your financial situation is pretty much fixed. You will always have a roof over your head, food on your plate, someone to look after you, and something to do where you are actually useful.
