So, since they did that Frieza + Cell episode I decided to check for more interesting duos they did. I did this all really fast so I probably missed some stuff, but I think the stuff I did find is accurate.
For the female voices:
In episode 1 they were both main characters of "Touch", and Popuko was done by a man in both halves.
In week 2 they were Rivarun and Mirakurun! This one really surprised me.
Week 3 I didn't find anything.
In this week's episode they were Mio and Ritsu.
For the men:
Week 1 were the voice actors bkub joked about in the 4koma, didn't find any specific synergy.
Week 2 there's some instances of the actors having interacted in shonens before.
Week 3 was Cell and Frieza.
And this week I just found some stuff from City Hunter.

It was that way last time, too.
I think it comes down to the magic of shitposting, like YMO shitposting with Kimi ni Mune Kyun can't wait for them to parody it . It's not meant to be taken serious, and the video was part of the joke. Three unshaven skinny men doing a shitty shuffle dance singing a cutesy love song with deadpan faces and voices. They wanted to see if they could get #1 as a joke, and they got up to #2.
Afterwards, whenever someone tries to cover it, playing it straight with a moe voice like the Maria Holic ED, it doesn't work as well. It's like turning Pop Team Epic into a character-driven story. You can't play shitposts straight.
The only time a cover of Kimi ni Mune Kyun somewhat worked to my knowledge was Miku's version because the robotic voice is like the deadpan nature of the original. Also, just the fact that it's Miku gives it a tongue in cheek edge. It's not played seriously at all.

So, the best idols were finally introduced this episode. Can't wait to see them perform.
Don't you think they're moving this a little too quick? I don't know how it was done in the manga, but it looks like next time we're already getting to a confrontation, immediately after the episode where they were introduced. I know they had to do something interesting for episode 3, but a few more episodes with MC as just a manager trying to make ends meet, maybe meeting the Volcanoes one by one at first would have been nice.
Do you think they'll make the Volcanoes into allies later down the line? I really like them as rivals, so I hope not.

Some katakana names gets really hard to translate if you don't have the official romaji for it. Going back to HNK, if it were being translated as it came out back in the day, Souther's name could very well have been translated as "Saucer" or "Souza" or "Sauzaa".
Anonymous 01/28/18 (Sun) 21:33:53 No. 786921
>>786904
Wait, I fucked up, what I mean is, without an official translation it's hard to know how things translate properly. Just having the romaji isn't enough. For example, Isidro and Schierke in Berserk had completely different names in fan translations until Miura finally released their official English names.

I don't know how accurate this is nowadays, but them referencing Wacky Races isn't all too surprising, because apparently the show is or was surprisingly popular in Japan, being one of only two American shows to appear in TV Asahi's 2006 list of Top 100 Anime (at #99, the other being Tom and Jerry at #53). You don't know the origin? It's one of the few times one of our shitposts have reached nip acclaim and became a meme over there.
The School Days anime ending was cecored with a scene like that, and someone here posted, "nice boat" because we were staring at it for a long fucking time while a murder was happening in the background. This was back on halfchan.
A nip found it and brought it back to futaba. It was a rare instance of our worlds colliding. Ever since "nice boat" has been a meme there, even showing up in anime sometimes like in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

The entire reason it was a meme on /v/ was because we were playing the as of the time only version of the game, which was in nip. Which meant we couldn't read the UI, which meant we had no idea that in the game you earned points which were used to level up your stats. That's where the difficulty meme came from.
Or it could be coincidental and they're referencing it for some other reason.

Now I'm not saying that this series will get very popular with normalfags, but for a different reason:
The enjoyment is different to JoJo or OPM or BnH. Those are all action manga/anime with real story lines and protagonists that go through actual trials to win challenges (with an asterisk for OPM, but you get my point).
Pop Team Epic doesn't have that. I don't think that it'll have long term success with normalfags. Its predecessor (honking) Chen is still a welcome joke when it is brought up. But it doesn't really excite crowds, does it?

They were already uploaded and "translated" in that very commie style by the two presumably long-established translators. I think one of these guys also localized a joke in those GuP kindergarten 4komas where one of them called the other a 'ho, so that should give you some idea.
I can't fault their knowledge of Japanese since mine is pretty limited but what I can translate I at least try to do respectfully, especially on danbooru where it's very convenient to have things like TNs with embedded links. Importing a minor part of the Japanese language (honorifics are far from the only thing that's difficult to translate) does not give you a good understanding of what the characters actually said. If you want that, you'd better learn Japanese. It's the same problem that makes philosophers and theologians study ancient Greek. The bible doesn't say that "in the beginning there was the λόγος", with a TL note saying "If you knew ancient Greek you would know what this means."
It says "In the beginning was the Word," and anyone who's actually interested in what the bible really says learns ancient Greek.
Japanese is the only language where translators don't commonly follow the rule of translating things. Again, it's far from the only thing you lose in a translation. It's just the only thing that people care about. But for example whenever somebody gets confused and thinks people are about them in an anime, that would be the perfect opportunity for people to rise up and demand that translators stop adding subjects and objects all willy-nilly. No one ever does. So it's not really about a better understanding of what's going on. It's about a) what you are comfortable with, and b) about the feeling of Japaneseness, that comes with sprinkling English text with dumb honorifics.

That's a false equivalence. Just because a proper name for something is made up of words that mean different things does not mean that you should translate every single particle individually. Names are always special.

Honorifics are essentially a form of titles, and convention with titles has generally always been to leave things completely in their native tongue, or to only translate what has a direct and clear translation. Translating ouji to prince is perfectly sensible, in fact it's something I'd personally prefer, though leaving it ouji wouldn't break tradition, whereas translating san to mister or miss is fucking retarded.

Okay, you two better shut up when the next episode comes out, but I'm down for some autistic arguing in between releases.
The thing about honorifics is that it represents a completely different way of looking at things. All the ways used to address in English are demeaning to the one saying them. When you call someone "Sir" or "Mister" you're using a shortened form of "Sire" and "Monsieur" , which is how you would call a higher ranking feudal lord. When you say those, you unwittingly admit yourself inferior to the person you address. It is very deeply ingrained in the western culture, with very heavy idealization of nobility. To western ear, calling someone a "King" or a "Lord" is a very big compliment.
Now let's look at the middle ground between west and east - Russia. In Russia, serfs have been enslaved for hundreds of years under feudal control. The serfs living in the noble's home, which were kinda like Uncle Toms of American slavery, were behaving in the western manner, smiling and addressing their masters with reverence. Communists didn't come to power just because, they used the centuries-old resentment of the common people towards the nobility, and used it to completely exterminate the nobility as a class. They drowned the country in noble blood, and exterminated every single blue bloodline they could find, even going as far as to murder all the well-to-do peasants (which later came back to bite soviet agriculture in the ass really hard). USSR was built on the lowest of people, and it is actually quite inspiring how a bunch of serfs became a superpower in almost no time. Therefore, in USSR, any mention of nobility, including "Sir" or "Mister" were met with outright hostility. That also includes the subservient western house serf behavior, including smiling. Russians really do not smile much, unless they really mean it. So, to have an actual word that would both represent the equality of all, and act as a stand-in for "Sir" and "Mister", Soviets came up with now infamous "Tovarish" or "Comrade" in English. However, it was not enough to actually show respect towards someone, so Russians also use patronims. A patronim is a third name every Russian has, along with a first name and a surname, and it is made out of the first name of the person's father + vich/vna for men and women respectively. So, with USSR gone and "Comrade" phased out, the way Russians address one another in respectful manner is via saying the first name + the patronim. It is a completely different system from western languages, at the very core, grammatical, lexical, historical and cultural. Translating that is very very tricky.
Now, the Japanese have an even stranger system. While westerners greet each other by praising one another, Russians greet by shaking hands (another very old gesture of equals), Japanese greet by bowing (which is basically exposing a neck for a blow in a show of fear/submission/loyalty), using business cards (a whole topic in itself), and using honorifics. Their honorifics are quite unique in a sense that they can both show superiority, equality, and inferiority of your conversation partner. It is a very huge list that is deeply ingrained in their culture, and it is outright impossible to translate it using such westerns terms as "Mister" or "Sir". The implications are very deep, and you would indeed need to learn a lot about the culture to know how they work.
So, I believe that using "-san" "-sama" and other honorifics in English translation is a cheap and dirty method, but it is the only one that realistically works. It is very safe to assume that people who watch anime have at least the very basics of required Japan culture knowledge, and they are willing to learn. Anime just keeps getting more popular, despite all the honorifics used, and therefore we can conclude that learning the meaning behind them is something people agree to do. It's true that to truly appreciate it you'd have to actually learn the language, but for non-moonspeaking plebs like us, using the cheap method of pre-required knowledge is still a superior way to enjoy the translation, at least over the complete westernization of text without any concern for the nuances.
tl;dr: Using honorifics in translations is kinda shit, but it's the only thing we can do beside learning moon.

This was how Russians addressed each other before the USSR as well, it really isn't anything particularly new.
I don't understand why you're going into cultural habits, I suppose it could be relevant for the discussion of localization versus translation, but that discussion was not really taking place.
>While westerners greet each other by praising one another,
何?
>Japanese greet by bowing (which is basically exposing a neck for a blow in a show of fear/submission/loyalty)
Bowing is lowering yourself, putting yourself beneath someone, its a height thing, as far as I'm aware it has absolutely no relation to beheading. In the past it was also a very common greeting in the west, a place with no real culture of beheading.
>So, I believe that using "-san" "-sama" and other honorifics in English translation is a cheap and dirty method, but it is the only one that realistically works.
It really isn't, it's perfectly standard. Not much different from retaining, say, mademoiselle, rather than writing miss, or calling the Russian emperor czar. Matter of fact, keeping san is more appropriate, as English and Japanese are distant from each other, and there is no clear translation, a good parallel would be the Slavic boyar. Any translation of Russian text you'll find will also refer to the characters by whichever names they're being referred to as in the original text, likewise it is utterly absurd when "translators" butcher manga by disregarding what's written and using a characters first name instead of the last one, or writing "Kyouko Toshino" instead of "Toshino Kyouko". Of course this is all from the perspective of translation, following very established norms. Localization is an entirely different matter, but if your aim is localization you might as well drink the whole bucket of diarrhea and translate "Satou-kun" to "Sam".

It was popularized by the French Revolution, and mostly used by communists. Russians only started using it en masse after the 1917.

That too.
>In the past it was also a very common greeting in the west, a place with no real culture of beheading.
Picsrelated. But really, it's not about beheading, it's about exposing your neck/head for a blow, with not necessarily decapitational results. Handshakes, for example, are a way equals showed they hide no weapons from each other (and that's why some cultures handshake by squeezing each other's sleeves, to show there's no weapons hidden there, too). Same for toasting by smashing mugs against each other, so that liquids would mix and show that there is no poison involved. A whole lot of gestures we use right now have these historical roots.
