In Hindu shastra, granthas, there are many references to the same stories happened in the past which defines karma and karmaphal(consequence of the karma). For our body there is an imagination which is 'treat your body as a chariot, the five senses are horses, the rope is our intellect, the driver is our mind and the soul is the passenger of that chariot and the destination of that chariot is mahaparinirvana or merging with the almighty'. In Sanatan(Hindu) shastra like Gita which is essence of all knowledge which is the words of the almighty himself, talks about control of the mind it talks about karmyog, bhaktiyog and gyanyog. These three are the three different paths which leads to the almighty. If you take gyanyog which is the most difficult and less fruitful of the three, it leads to moksha or mahaparinirvan, where the soul gets every properties of the almighty, he gets liberated from rebirth. Second one os karmyog yog where the person has to do nishkaam karma( divine karma) which is the karma that is done for the almighty by the person who does it, this way is tricky but easier than gyanyog. Last one and most important is is bhaktiyog or the way of divine love where the person has to keep his mind devoted fully to the almighty. These kind of yogis becomes leela parikar of the almighty, the highest position a soul can obtain.I have read about bodhisattvas, which were the rightful people who did their duty exceptionally well, however they all fall into the karmyogi class of enlightenment. Like The king Ratnesh, where god Indra came to take a test of his duties or how he protect his 'saranagat'or who took refuge under him. (I am not discussing the stories as it'll take more space refer to bodhisattva stories on wikipedia). Essence of every scripture written or told is to 'Have contol of the mind and senses'. {Om Shanti. OM NAMAH SHIVAAY}.
