Are the magic circles necessary for Solomonic/ceremonial magic? Most texts say they are, but some (such as An Excellent Booke of the Arte of Magicke by Humphrey Gilbert and John Davis) don't mention them at all, while one even says that an imaginary circle can be used (A discoverie of witchcraft - the 1665 edition).

They are necessary, although I've never heard of anyone getting killed by not using one, but people seem to imply that's what will happen if you even stick a finger out of the circle. This is why swords are good to have, long piece of iron that can stick out of the circle, while being a carving tool.

I'll comment since I'm currently in the practice. I'm no master wizard or Golden Dawn adept. Just a white mage hobbyist. Yes it matters, but only for effectiveness and potency. From what I have learned in my journey is that intent, will, and sincerity matter more than anything else in your spells or invocations. Some anon who's absolutely hit rock bottom and in dire need can cry out in his anguish, "God, Lilith, Lucifer, whoever, anyone. Please help me! I'm ready to give up." as tears of pain stream down his face. You have another anon who's scribbled down all of the instructions from becomealivingmeme dot com and sets up his altar then says "Let's see if this woo actually works." The anon who cried out in desperation was heard, but the anon who went into this with a closed or skeptical mind gimped himself from the get go. The sigils, rituals, and ceremonies are a way to amplify your prayers and spells. This implies that the caster already believes and is looking for a means to make his/her prayers more powerful. Like installing a more powerful amp to drive your subwoofers for more boom boom. Your magick is more powerful when you put forth the effort to make a louder boom boom in the spirit world. It's not a requirement that I light candles to pray to Andromalius, but if I have some serious business and want serious results, maybe I need to go the extra mile with sigils and candles for this request. I hope that makes sense for whoever is reading.

Sigils and candles are often effective for me. The form of candle magic I use was based off some YouTube channel with a British Hoodoo practitioner. The Norse pantheon are the spirits I prefer to make requests to. I should be using food offerings more as I think these help. The biggest one I've done was offering steak, buttered bread, and beer to Freyr, with candles and sigils, for mid-summer.
