Hey /x/!

Does anyone here know what the figure in the upper left corner of this Ouija board is?

I get that the chicken warrior is Abraxas, the weird Elephant Snail is from a Roman Gem Stone and the ring at the right bottom is the staff of Hermes.

But this weird Elephant head holding a scepter and two human heads at the back and bottom eludes me.

That would certainly be a candidate, however I found nothing related to the two human faces wearing the Elephant scalp holding a scepter when I googled Demetrius I.

Alexander the Great is also depicted with the elephant scalp on coins; the sceptre could be a reference to a king or a ruler, though the two human faces brings to mind the two-faced god Janus.

Hmm I was looking up optical illusions, sadly I found nothing. This figure is strange, why would it end up on that Ouija board if it meant nothing?

There is a bit of background on this board, Nirvana Talking Board, here: https://www.williamfuld.com/ouija_boards_other.html

<The arc layout of the letters is very similar to his first Ouija design though the moon, stars, and Goodbye are missing. Instead, the Nirvana board displays “Farewell” and unusual symbols such as an elephant crawling out of a snail shell, a warrior with a flail, the staff of Hermes with twin serpents, and a cloudy, windy face to decorate the Nirvana talking board. These boards are extremely rare and because of the Bond connection extremely sought after. Manufactured circa 1907

The pic of the original instructions to small to be legible, but you could try contacting The Museum of Talking Boards if they can send you a high res version of the pic – could be some explanation of the symbol there: https://museumoftalkingboards.com/index.html

I have written to the museum of talking boards, the elephant with human heads is a Gryllos that was popular with the Romans on gem stones and intaglios. Its a symbol of power.

They also gave more info about the elephant coming out of a Sea Shell. The shell is representing the fertile uterus, the elephant is associated with the triumph of Dionysus, symbolizing victory over evil.

Thanks for the info! Very interesting to see these alternate symbols used on the spirit boards before they all settled on the current ones. The symbols on the Magic Swastika Talking Board are really intriguing, and the mysterious elephant with human faces in particular. I would have assumed the elephant was associated with Hannibal to the Romans…
