I'm not yet ready to say for sure if we found anything yet but I still want this on record.
I'm staying for a while with my family. It's a few acres out in a rural area outside the city limits. It's nice, quiet enough to hear your own thoughts and and you can get a nice view of the stars at night, at least compared to the city.
The last few days there's been a strong dead animal smell lingering around the front porch…sometimes. It seems like something went under the porch and died, except there's siding down there and nothing could get in. It's also intermittent, which is strange considering the lack of wind.
I was restless tonight, and decided to go find the source of it. I know my little sister has a flashlight, so I go up to her room.
"Hey, do you still have a Mag-Lite up there"
"Yeah, what's up?"
"I'm going to go find whatever died out there"
"Cool, I'll go with"
We head off into the front yard to go find it. We don't have much luck…you go too far and all of a sudden you've lost the scent and have to go looking for it again.
Eventually we realize that the scent is moving all around the front yard. I mention it, and we both agree that it's odd.
Too odd. My sister likes the internet as much as I do, so I ask,
"You like that internet urban legend crap right?
"Yeah"
"Aren't skinwalkers and wendigo and shit supposed to smell like rotting meat?
"Oshit"
Kind of laughing it off and kind of not, we head out to the tool shed and get armed, a machete for me and a Gerber parang for her. We go out to look a little more and I swear to God the scent was starting to lead us out into the woods across the road. Let me mention that over the last few days I had only smelled the smell by the front porch, never by the woods.
We both "nope" out and head back for the porch. I hand her the machete and Mag-Lite, put away the parang and swap it out for a felling axe and we look around some more, but it kept getting stronger closer to the woods so we've decided to call it a night. Tomorrow, we'll take the family's dumbass mutt with us to look around the front yard in daylight. The most logical thing I can think of is that she killed something while tied up to the tree in the front yard and buried it (but why does it move).
We have 2 guns, a moist nugget and a single shot 20 gauge but I don't want to be caught wandering innawoods armed without a good explanation
I'll follow up later. If there's a non-spooky explanation I'll be sure to let you guys know, so if I don't post for a few days, check for a missing 24 year old male and 14 year old female in southwest Missouri. Any ideas on what's going on or how to deal with it would be appreciated
