ITT we discuss ectoplasm. I've never really heard much of the stuff being seen since the Victorian era, since those mediums were almost all hoaxers. Has anyone on this board encountered anything like it, or heard of someone's encounter?

And what is it supposed to be, anyway? If "ghosts" are primarily composed of energetic particles as some claim, then is "ectoplasm" just water and dust in the air becoming ionized?

A few people in my family claim to have met ghosts, yet none of them have ever said anything about ectoplasms. Nor have I ever heard a modern medium talking about them. I think ectoplasms were the result of spiritualism mixed with the positivism of the late 19th century. What do you get when you combine the belief in spirits with the belief that nothing is real unless it's proven with observable data? Ectoplasms. I think technology played a role too. With cameras becoming easier to use and more widely available, there was more pressure on believers to take the first photograph of a spirit.

Yeah, I love reading about the whole Spiritualist movement in the 19th century. Nearly all of the accounts have been debunked of course, especially the "ectoplasm" photos. Pretty neat trick photography though.

Another question I've got: What did the ghosts look like? Any idea why most ghosts are described as "misty" looking?

The one my mum saw was wearing a white shirt/dress and she couldn't see anything other than that. It was night and all she saw was that white piece of clothing moving on its own, which at first she mistook for a person. My uncles and one of their cousins talked about ghosts moving their blankets while they were trying to sleep or moving other objects in the room (like a hat on a wardrobe). They all agree that the house they lived in when they were kids was haunted, and one room in particular 'felt weird'.

Neat.

as a child i lived in a house that had two spots that i would see dripping coming from the ceiling.

i was always freaked out by it because i knew there werent any pipes in that region of the ceiling.

one day when i was older and witnessed it again and got scared. i man'd up and walked over to the drippings and touched the surfaces to see if it was wet on the ceiling, the walls, the carpet.

all dry as a bone.

years later, talking with my mother about our old house. she explains there were spots in the house she didnt like. both spots are where i saw the drippings. never having told ANYONE about the drippings evar.

i attributed it to ectoplasm.

who knows…

It's real. I know two people capable of generating it in a similar fashion as the 1800s/1900s mystics - actually its been my assumption that those fakirs for which we have photos were just imitating a real ectoplasm event.

All I know is what I've seen - the stuff dissolves in strong enough light, but is tangible (remarkably similar to cotton candy) and even leaves a temporary residue behind.

What kind of kid sees the ceiling drip and thinks "oh shit that's impossible there are no pipes there!"?

a "gifted" child.
