 No.27924

Scientists have claimed that death may not be as final as we once feared – and that humans have souls that can leave the body after their hosts kick the bucket.

It may sound like a supernatural myth, but the idea that human consciousness lives on after death has been put forward by a number of well-respected scientists.

And the British scientist at the forefront of the eerie theory claims that humans have souls which don't die along with the body.

We many not know exactly what consciousness is, but physicist Sir Roger Penrose believes that it's just a packet of information stored at a quantum - or sub-atomic - level.

Sensationally, he claims to have found evidence that this information, which is stored in microtubules within human cells, leaves the body after a person dies.

Sir Roger has argued that when a person dies temporarily, this quantum information is released into the universe, only to return to the body's cells if the host is brought back to life.

He argues that this explains why people can have near-death experiences, and believes that this quantum information amounts to a soul leaving the body.

The physics expert said: "If the patient dies, it's possible that this quantum information can exist outside the body, perhaps indefinitely, as a soul."

And Sir Roger is not alone in believing this, since his theory is backed by researchers at the renowned Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich.

Experts there argue that our physical universe is just a perception, and that once our bodies die there is an infinite life beyond.

Oh great. Now instead of peaceful nothingness we get to float around aimlessly through infinity, going insane after trillions of years without stimulus or human contact.

Can I travel? It would be nice to see the world, without worrying about airports and lost luggage and getting mugged by foreign savages.

lol sounds very scientific

1. This has nothing to do with atheism. The existence of a soul doesn't imply the existence of a creator god and vice versa.

2. Just because a scientist believes something, doesn't mean it's true. Has it been proven that consciousness can leave the body?

3. Even assuming that consciousness can exist outside of the body, doesn't mean that the soul is immortal. Maybe it only lasts 5 minutes without a body.

how in the name of fuck are you guys *HAPPY* to know there's an afterlife?

There's a huge leap of logic from "some sort of matter is conserved" to "the composition of that matter is conserved".

Let's suppose that you have some sort of consciousness attached to your body that only uses your atoms as a sort of anchor. Even given that, we still know that the brain produces our characteristically human thoughts; we know how brain damage to certain, very specific, areas of the brain destroys certain cognitive abilities, emotions, and alters one's personality. If you damage certain areas of the brain, parts of you really go away, forever. The OP suggests that the destroyed parts actually stayed intact, just inaccessible.

Even if we suppose such a "ghost": There's no evidence to suggest that this "ghost" will remain coherent after the destruction of the brain and that it will continue to produce the same sort of thoughts as it did when the individual's brain was alive. Most people will imagine that they'll still be all there, personality and memories intact, just sitting around in an endless, black void, but this assumption is made in ignorance of the incredible amount of cognitive processing that has to be performed to construct the phenomenon of just basic self-awareness.

This is line of reasoning is analogous to supposing that sand on the beach can run a webserver because, after all, computers are made from sand and they can run webservers. It's inane. Whatever ghost you have inside you may dissipate within minutes or seconds. It's entirely possible that whatever "material" it is made of is conserved, yet that its state is so disturbed that nothing resembling human thought occurs. Your quantum remains, or whatever, will resemble the living you as much as a pile of molten plastic and silicate resembles a working computer.

Any of you familiar with the concept of Quantum Woo? Because this is Quantum Woo. The fact that there are no links to any sources or research papers should tell you that much; and even if there are linked papers or sources, you should still at least have a quick look at said paper. It wouldn't be the first time I have seen a paper claiming it didn't need any sources to its research because it's basically speculation per part of the author. Searching around Google shows the only sources for this are just sourceless tabloids.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is possible that there could be life after death, but it will probably not be at the quantum level. In fact, suspect about any articles talking about quantum science-magic, since at this point it is just a buzzword used by tabloids to produce clickbait. Also suspect of their use of the word "theory"; this word has a very defined meaning, and they still use it in place of hypothesis or "this scientist casually mentioned this"

I'm not sure how odd this should really seem. It's not like this is some Abrahamic religious shit. It's a fairly common philosophic principle that sentient, conscious life is, by definition, multi-dimensional. We all exist on planes of existence that we aren't aware of right now, because the limitations of our current existence remove our ability to perceive it.

That doesn't mean you die, and you go to the pearly gates to be judged. That's some bronze age shit right there. It might mean that once we no longer have a perspective here, we shift back to the plane that represents our normal existence, as a normal part of the cycle of life.

This still doesn't prove the existence of a god retard, budhists also believe in souls yet a lot of them don't necessarily believe in god. You christcucks are so fucking annoying.

Near death experiences are caused by a chemical release in the pineal gland. If this energy is released from the body at death but returns if the person is revived minutes later, then this gentleman needs to theorize and then prove how the energy becomes resorbed after revival as well as what mechanism retains this soul energy during Iife. Cellular/electrical energy dissipates over time, not immediately, after a being dies.

Ensuring you could get an erection in the afterlife was a serious concern for the ancient Egyptians.
