What are you guys' thoughts on the West, specifically my country?

Because I can tell you that literally the only times Vietnam is ever referenced in Italy is when the war is sometimes discussed but not really either. As far as the people are concerned, you might as well just be a foggy spot on a map full of terra incognita. It really sucks that there's all these foreign lands but as far as we know America. Yurom and the USA are the only countries on Earth.

like you and most of italian, we here in Nam only know your country is when someone talk about the pisa tower, or your ww2 military history, and i dont mean to offense you or anything. Thats a fact.

and yes, beside the whole vietnam war, nobody seem to know anything, even just a little bit of info,.. of our country. Thats not really strange since we arent that powerful or have any impact to the world whatsoever.

people know about korean because they have Kpop, or Japan, because they have good food and anime and stuff, and the same applies to other famous countries.

Thank to the Internet. Vietnam has connected to the Internet since 1997. I was born in the right generation.

I see memes, and know nothing.

>and i dont mean to offense you or anything. Thats a fact.

none taken

>nobody seem to know anything

from what little I remember, most of the time the entire Indochina region was either a vassal or an empire under the governance of a ruler of a different race than its native people, the significance of the Vietnam war is all about how it finally broke through and became an independent nation that can stand in the world scene

that map looks pretty damn fake, most Americans know that it's at least neighboring Russia, the thing they don't get is the scale of the world compared to the USA, thinking it's much more vast than it actually is or thinking countries are much nearer or further away than in reality

>>2255

no, because american are ignorance when you compare them with ppl European.

also, this is the source of the survey

>most of the time the entire Indochina region was either a vassal or an empire under the governance of a ruler of a different race than its native people

no really. Indochina only under french rule for 90 years. The region it self has a rich and long history of war between kingdoms. Vietnam is probably the strongest country in the region. Vietnamese dominance the whole region.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siamese%E2%80%93Vietnamese_War_(1831%E2%80%9334)

so no, colonialism only exist in indochina for nearly a century, but the impact is undeniable.

beside things like pho or the vietnam war, no one seem to know or even care about our culture.

dont really care about that. Westerner only like japan, Korea or china because of things like musics, anime, film, fucking kpoop,…

i once met an Italian couple back when i was working in a hotel. They are very friendly and humble. They spent a few month in vietnam traveling across the country to explore the culture

the only thing that got in my head is that Italy was

- the central of the Roman Empire

- where the Renaissance first took place

- pizza

- pasta and rice came from China, transported by Marco Polo and countless merchants on the Silk Road

- Hirohiko Araki's favourite country

Interesting

So what exactly was the impact of the French on the country? Are there a lot of racemixed people?

>beside things like pho or the vietnam war, no one seem to know or even care about our culture.

Teach me friend

>>2290

lmaoing at the last

one thing about Marco Polo though is that while he was very inaccurate in what he brought, it still is a significant journey, since even way back into the Roman period Europeans knew that Southeast Asia existed, but they had no idea what it looked like as the only people who would travel that far were merchants, and most of them wouldn't go further than India for logistical reasons. The Chinese even called Romans something like West Kingdom or something like that since they heard tales of how the Senate worked and were real fucking impressed by it.

>>2298

sounds about right

>>2317

It's as long as Vietnam from my map, but it's very different in its layout and features so I understand why you may think so

>>2350

Actually, the Germans introduced most of the medieval architecture. Italians were mostly there to build pretty monasteries and universities.

It looks really neat, any building in particular I should be looking at?

>Are there a lot of racemixed people?

no, like literally non. The french dont bread with annamite, thats why we dont have such of problems like that

and like i have said, no one care about our culture, and thats a good thing

i dont want to ended up like jap, their culture is a mix of west and old tradition, which sometime make no fucking sense

they celebrate Christmas like one of their holiday? and they dont even do that back in the 30s or 40s

our culture is center around the people and their daily life, from what we eat, we wear our the way we talk to each other, it reflexes our long history.

ex:

Food

We have a long tradition of agriculture, a normal family back then need to have a good connection since they have a lot of member

we share food to show the deep connection between each individual, which is different when you compare to westerner culture

pic 1 show what we call mâm cơm, if you want to eat something, you use you chopstick to pick food from a bow, then drop it in your own small bow to eat. Every member in the family all do that, we share food.

talk

in english, you only have Pronouns like i, you, we, they, he, she, it, his, her, him, them.

but in vietnamese, we have tớ, tôi, bạn, cậu,chú, cô, em, mày,tao, đám người, bọn họ, bọn tao, nhóc, nhóm người,… each prase is use in different context.

for example

talk to friend: tớ, tôi, ông, cậu, bạn (if you barely know them, just met them, they are new to you, or you want to make friend with them….in the nutshell, to show your good will). You use: tao, mày…when you know the other person well, or they are you best friend….thing like that.

vietnamese is complicate, even for normal viet

the french didnt have much impact on our culture, but they still have. They way we build house change when the frech come, our they way we wear, our fashion taste,….

ex: pic 2

Men back then use to wear áo dài khăn xếp, and woman wear áo dài, but nowadays we only wear it in importance event

What did they do?

destroy our heritage, of coure.

ex:

picture of Kính Thiên palace (built during the reign on Ly dynasty), thousand year olds heritage. Fucking French pig just destroyed it and built an ugly Blockhouse above it

most of Thăng Long imperial citadel are just basically ruin, fucking ruin. When i visited it above 3-4 years ago, i almost cried when i actually saw all of the old citiadel. Ruin, ruin, nothing, nothing. Our culture, our heritage, gone.

you should visit Meridian Gate (imperial city), it look similar to the one in china, but only smaller

also, visits cu chi tunnel, minh mang tomb, hoi an, Hai van pass,Thien Mu Pagoda, places like that

you can ask more if you want, im not really an expert when it come to our culture, but i will try to answer all

i do learn a little bit of our history and culture, but not much

Vietnam is a beautiful country.I been to Hanoi, HCMC, VLC, Dalat & Nha Trang. Food beyond delicious. I previously had no idea so much coffee was grown in Vietnam. I drank lots of great coffee while there. I bought tea leaves fresh still on the branch, stuffed a teapot full and added boiling water - A real treat! VLC was really great, two rivers, just going to the grocery store is an experience. HCMC is really crowded though! The Starbucks I went to in HCMC was by far the most expensive Starbucks I have ever went to.

About the food picture.

Soup looks nice loaded down with green onions looks delicious. I assume the greens in the bowl is pea tips? I like pea tips and I eat them at Chinese place here. But in Vietnam I really did not see them anywhere. I did not find them on any menu at any place I visited. I was at a home in Vietnam as well I asked for pea tips but they did not know where to get them so we had baby bok choy instead. Also at the street market I did not see them for sale anywhere. The vegetables are so fresh in Vietnam it exposes how bad the produce I have to pick from here is.

> Vietnamese is complicate

I hate it when i have to meet a stranger. I did not know her/his age, so it is very embarassing if i use the wrong word.

It is sorted by age and gender.

Here is some pronouns:

Young girl/boy: em

Older man (several years old): anh

woman : chị

Even a bit older man: chú

woman: cô

More old man (20-30 years older than you, for both genders): bác (uncle)

Very old person (older than the uncle):

Male: ông (~grand father)

Female: bà (~grand mother)

Actually, ông and bà are usually used in invitations or formal context, for a VIP, etc, the age is not important.

The older person than the very old one: cụ

(Great grandparents) The word is used for both gender.
