> Are they respected and cherished or forgotten and living in poverty?
it depend a lot on where they live and there life after serving the armed forces
Both of my grand are veteran, my grandfather-brother died in 1979 during the battle of Dong Dang fort. You can say that they are very well-respected in the hometown, my family received some small pension from the state and gift every year. In general, veteran here are very respected, but like i said, it depend a lot from other element
I know a bunch of stories about veteran ended up doing shitty jobs, received little/non respect. Some ended up in big city selling small merchandise, or doing whatever kind of low-tier job,….
its true that veteran cant live if they just received pension, those pension, if anything, are not enough. I once saw a disable vet begging money on the street (probably fake, but i dont really know because i was hurry at the time)
