Great atmosphere
Solid writing with and interesting plot
Great OST
Good gameplay that tends to drag on a bit and towards the end sort of devolves into just another action game
It’s pretty good time, just know that the sequel got canned but they sort of compromised into putting a lot of the ideas and “ending” into American Nightmare. Also, if you liked Twin Peaks you’ll love this. Alternatively, if you end up liking this but have never watched Twin Peaks, then that should be the next thing you do.

For some reason in my playthrough, Alan Wake kept jumping on cars. I think he was drunk or something.

Sam Lake recently gave an interview about Alan Wake's development. It was a total mess that kept shifting genre and story. It was originally going to be an open world kind of game but publishers weren't interested, so it kept getting changed and changed until it became the weird mess it is now.

It, and the dlc are surprisingly good. And by good I mean the story was fun.

Alan Wake is one of those games that actually had scary moments, not by trying to scare the player with loud noises, but through atmosphere and gameplay. A good example is that you'll be going from light source to light source because they act as both checkpoints and safe havens. But there's going to be a lot of times where you just barely make it. Of course, there's goodies off the beaten path, far away from any light source. That's when you'll see more and more shadows coming out of the trees.
It's not an amazing game, but I think it does what it's trying to do well and it has a good campy charm to it. It's too bad that American Nightmare seems to be all over the place.

I do kinda like how the open world instead became large, open levels with a lot hidden in them… but towards the end all the fighting becomes a bit grating and the platforming elements… well, they are just not fun. Still, I remember Alan Wake fondly enough. It’s a good but flawed game imo.

>What am I in for?
an experience. might sound retarded but remedy are one of the few studios who still put actual soul into their games.
while the individual parts in AW might have their flaws on their own (like combat or enemy variety etc) the sum is bigger than parts combined. if you liked how max payne worked with the writing and all the little bits like lords & ladies you gonna get the same (imo even better this time). just instead of noir in a surreal horror/twink peaks setting.
however it's ok not to like it, different strokes and all, but there's a reason it has a very dedicated fanbase

they also said years ago they changed it because telling a story (or more the story they wanted to tell) wouldn't have worked with an open worldd. being able to dick around doing minigame shit and collecting stuff kills any type of urgency and feel of progression.
plus microsoft had their hand in the mess as well, being an exclusive and all.

>repetitive gameplay
>"Psychological" horror (in this sense it essentially means less jumpscares)
>NOT Max Payne
>Kinda gay action sequences
>All the enemies are insane lumberjacks imbued by darkness and 70% of all fights take place in an old lumberyard
>Badly riffs on that show that I can't fucking remember the name of that Deadly Premonition was essentially extremely similar to
That being said it's quite a unique but droll experience, I'm afraid to say.

I enjoyed absolutely everything about Control except for the main character. It’s getting a final DLC that supposedly explains Alan Wake better. Having never played anything else the company has done, I can’t speak on the subject, but maybe that’ll make the Alan Wake experience rounder. Control’s definitely worth a pirate.

when you get around playing AW (and QB) remember that microsoft wanted AW as a showcase for the 360 (hence the exclusivity till remedy bought the rights back) and QB was conceived when MS was all into TVTVTVSPORTSTV shit.
