So this is sort of fucking with me. I found a great deal for Let’s Go Pikachu today, and considering this specific version is starting to get rare for whatever reason I decided to pick it up.

So I went ahead and played it not expecting much:

>reused assets from Go but touched up with nice texture work

>nice character animations

>get two pokemon to follow you (something that has been requested since the original yellow and heart gold)

>properly scaled Pokémon

>battles actually take place in the area you’re at

>faithful to the original while adding its own twist

>nice orchestra version of the original OST

Now here’s what’s fucking with me. This game is still a casualized, asset flip cash grab… and yet it is still a better game, has less bugs, looks nicer, and is actually closer to the next gen Pokemon game I wanted than fucking Sword and Shield.

Has anyone at Gamefreak talked about why SnS released on the state it did? Of course it was a financial success and Pokemon fans still ate it up, so I imagine they wouldn’t talk about it, but I find it absolutely astounding that it looks and plays so much worse than Let’s Go.

>Has anyone at Gamefreak talked about why SnS released on the state it did?

whatever their reasons, I can tell you exactly what happened with the national dex. Dynamax and gigantamax load in entirely new models

both make your 'mon plus-sized, but gigantamax at least justifies that a new model must be loaded. Dynamax, on the other hand, is the exact same pokemon in appearance but it's stored in a new model anyway

additionally, the clouds overhead compound this. There's a separate model for each number of clouds. No, not a separate cloud model, a separate pokemon model.

what should have been handled with a script and a null object is instead just the most wasteful crap, making each 'mon eat up at least 4 times as much space in the game data as it would actually need if they did less work

there simply wasn't enough room for the full national dex; they wasted it on inefficient practices

See, you’d thing that might be the case but people were accessing a lot of Pokémon supposedly cut from the game long before the DLC was announced. Worse yet, the Pokémon they were accessing had their dynamax forms complete with animations.

That cut looks to have been done to sell the Pokémon back to you like they did with the GTS.

Even if this was true, gen 7 had as many models as it did and ds carts are way smaller than switch carts. Additionally, they wouldn't be able to include more pokemon in the dlc. No, they did this purely so they could sell them back to you for extra money because the only thing gamefreak has learned about making video games is that the consumer base is mostly retards who will happily eat up anything they shit out.

It’s made even worse when you consider what they did with Pokémon Home. Everyone actually buying into these things have pretty much cemented us never getting a true next gen Pokemon title. At this point they’ll just keep being lazy as shit with their games then charging for basic functions.

I think it's a combination of a few factors. First, Sw/Sh was blatantly rushed as fuck. The earlier parts of the game seemed to be reasonably polished (The cutscene showing the starters is a great example), whereas you have other shit like >>16937127 . It feels like the DLCs are GF trying to make up lost ground. If they waited another year to release it, odds are the game would be in a better position, albeit not an ideal one. Second, features have to be accounted for. LGPE didn't have anything akin to the Wild Area. Things are more confined, so things such as draw distance aren't really as much an issue. Similarly, it didn't have anything similar to Pokemon Camps, which were probably a factor in pokemon not being correctly scaled. Also I recall them having issues transferring models from the DS titles, which may have contributed to things going amiss Although it doesn't explain several attacks being cut

It goes without saying that none of this justifies GF's mediocre handiwork, and I legitimately wouldn't be surprised if the DLCs don't sell anywhere near as well as the original titles. Only time will tell.

As of now it’s the fourth best selling entry coming behind diamond and pearl, you also have to account for the price hike so perhaps they don’t see that position as much of a loss. Now in terms of combined sales with the third entry it’s pretty low on the list but the DLC may boost its ranking.

Either way, the big thing Gamefreak could and probably will take away from this is that they really don’t have to try when it comes to making a Pokémon game that will sell. They released a rushed, broken, unbalanced, and cut up for DLC game at full price and it still sold really well. Really, I think it’s laziness mixed with genuine incompetence as game designers that will keep us from ever getting the next gen Pokemon game we want.

Like I said initially, it’s rough with the mobile phone tie in game seems to have more passions and reverence for the source material or than the actual mainline game.

The average Pokemon fan will buy anything with the word Pokemon in the title. Oftentimes, Pokemon is quite literally the only game they play. Nintendrones in general share similarities buying any and all Nintendo products, consuming nothing outside of Nintendo products but Pokemon fans take it to a whole other level.

I swear the devs focus way too hard on the cute shit, as if pokemon isn't full of edgy/cool designs like Garchomp, or Rayquaza

A lot of these indie developers are far from artist and get caught in the trap of thinking of the Pokémon as “functions” like Capcom did with Infinite. They think that as long as they get the gameplay right they can snag the Pokémon audience, but there’s a lot more to it.

People try to blame it on incompetence but it is actually malice. One months before Sword and Shield's release an interview came out with Gamefreak saying it had no plans to do any paid DLC for the game. This was aligned with the attitude they took in 2013 when they last stated that they would not do paid DLC. Then a month or two after the games released they announced new paid DLC for the game that introduces the missing Pokemon. How is it that they didn't know about this paid DLC three months before it was announced?

Additionally, Sword and Shield are only 10 GB in size. The default switch game carts can support up to 32 GB. They still would have had enough space to put all Pokemon in.

It's clear that what they did was decide to go back on their promise not to do paid DLC in the most underhanded way imaginable.

To clarify, just days (on November 12th or so) before the release of Sword and Shield, Masuda says there are no plans to reintroduce missing Pokemon. Then on the 9th of January or so two new DLC expansions are announced that add in the missing pokemon. So within a period of a month and a half the story being told completely changes.

Fucked up thing is, as of now the DLC doesn’t even include all the Pokémon and leaves out just enough to do a “season 2” if they so desired.

It sucks because you can’t even really hope that the next game will be better as there really is no reason for GF to even try, and if by some miracle it was better their monetization would snuff out any reason to actually buy and play the thing.

A-team was working on that one game that TobyFox composed for that no cared about while B-team developed Sword and Shield. I don't know who developed Let's Go. That said, it's no excuse, as games developed by the B-team before Sword and Shield were consistently about as good as those developed by the A-team, sometimes better. Look at Gens 4, 5, and 6 and you'll see this is pretty obvious.

I wonder if their passion is just gone when it comes to Pokémon. Like, maybe they had just enough left to semi-try on Let’s Go as they were remakes of the originals, but as far as new Pokémon goes they just want to be done with it…. or it could be incompetence. Seems like any time Gamefreak tries to branch out they fail horribly, and they keep fucking up things that weren’t broken with the Pokémon series for years.

It sold millions. People complaining means nothing: They'll buy the next games too. In Game Freak's eyes, this is a masterpiece. They put in the bare minimum of effort and resources and came out with a bestseller, and they're gonna get multiple returns from people buying DLC, paying extra to unlock Mew, or paying the annual fee to prevent Game Freak from deleting their Pokemon.
