Anyone know what happened to this? I used to get excited about it in 2014, but I forgot about it till now and there hasn't been any update in 2 years.
ron edit: added "Dead games thread" as the subject. Use this thread to talk about dead games

Can the thread be at least games that are actually dead i.e. proprietary servers that got shut down and never leaked so there's no way to play it. I thought Nosgoth was "dead" and found out there's a small community that still plays it. Are City of Heroes that was thought to be "dead" until it was found people were playing it.

Nosgoth was cool, but Jesus I hate tiny arena games that you can only play through matchmaking. Imagine if it was 16v16 with vampires flying all over the place and shit

Do you remember playing Twisted Metal 2 online back in the 90s? We would have IRC/ICQ/AIM groups and connect to each other directly via IP.

Dead Island might not have been the greatest game ever but the melee combat showed potential so it's a shame that this game never came out. Also whatever happened to Dead Island 2 and Dying Light 2?

Both are still coming out, and dying light has some DLC based on hellraid coming out soon, apparently
Don't know how good it'll be though

No, I grew up playing Doom co-op with my dad, then when Half-Life came out I played that and its mods constantly, and later Q3, UT, et cetera. I mostly used Gamespy or All-Seeing Eye to find games. I wish I didn't have to wait at least 2 minutes in between fixed 15 minute matches to play almost all multiplayer games now. For some reason casuals just lap up the 4v4/5v5 shit that is trendy now even though everyone has to perform or you have no chance of winning, unlike a 12v12 game of TFC. It's bizarre how those games simultaneously had a higher skill ceiling and were also more relaxed due to the lack of pressure. Nobody gets mad when they lose except egotistical faggots because you aren't at risk of wasting another 4 minutes waiting for the next match.

There's plenty of games that have been shut down but there are private severs and fan-remakes, the most obvious in my mind are Paragon and Gigantic. The only problem is neither has actual matchmaking and rely on discord to get matches.

What killed it? I used to play it nearly seven years ago, but at that point I had a toaster that could barely run it past 20 FPS and at some point I quit and didn't keep up with it.

That to me isn't dead I know to many it is though. As long as a group of people play it and there's some way to join in, it's fine. PS2 online is still played by people. I can imagine plenty of MUDs have died because they're currently as niche as it gets and people will only go to ones that have players.

Agreed.
I remember fucking around with the glider thing and using the game's built-in wallhacks (the odor sniffer gun attachment or whatever it was) to one-hit fags from around corners with a shotgun.
The customization was great too, though of course it was hidden behind a lot of grinding and shitty (((microtransactions))).
