Are there any JRPGs around, whose English translations aren't Ted Woolsey-style hackjobs that randomly change things about the plot, characters, and the names cause muh western sensibilities and muh cultural differences, and instead are faithful to the Japanese script? Fan translations are fine, too.

The Caligula Effect is subbed and undubbed, so you can verify every voiced line for yourself as you play.

As far as I can tell, it seems accurate. I mean I'm not a Japanese expert, but I haven't noticed any bullshit.

Here's a few that immediately come to mind that I'm highly confident didn't get warped in the localization process:

>Xenogears

>Xenoblade (not the sequels)

>Persona 1 PSP (not the PSX one)

>Persona 5

Xenogears took a few hits but the only real standout was Citan's name; calling him Shitan would have resulted in giggling children and concerned parents

Probably, but even good translations will never fully convey how they are in Japanese. The languages are so fundamentally different in how they view the world and express things that concessions have to be made at some point to get readable English. If you want the true experience you have to play in the native language, there just isn't any substitute for that. That would be true even if the industry wasn't infected with insufferable faggots.

Changes to the way the text is presented in order to make gramatically correct and free-flowing dialogue is fine with me. I'm not bothered by that kind of stuff. I just don't want stuff like randomly naming villains after music band members, characters drinking soft drinks at bars instead of alcohol, and adding out-of-place quips to the dialogue, to pander to American kids, and creating worlds that don't have any beliefs in them whatsoever cause religion is a big no-no.

OK, good luck. Regarding Caligula Effect, I just want to be perfectly clear that I meant the original Vita game. The remake got fucking NISA (and also it's a shitty remake with dumbed-down gameplay).

I also agree with the other anon about Persona PSP. I love the game and it doesn't seem to have any westernized bullshit. Well, granted, they did remove the honorifics, but that's about it.

It's more than just grammar. There are some cultural ideas that don't really exist in our culture, or concepts which are tied together in a word that might not necessarily be tied together in ours, creating the opportunity for puns. There isn't any real way to translate those and usually localization studios end up having to rephrase the whole sentence or come up with a completely different joke.

OP here. If it's necessary to make a joke work, for example, it's also fine. I'm not THAT hardcore of a purist that I need everything translated literally. All I don't want are changes due to cultural differences that aren't necessary, e.g. the shit they pulled off with the first Ace Attorney.

Also, while meme translators are cancer, Ted Woolsey was not one of them. He tried his best with what he had to work with, and I've gained a new respect for him after looking into things.

You can be fine with whatever you find acceptable. I am just saying the other guy was right in that there will always be interesting jokes and lines of dialogue that will lose some of their value in the process of translation. Sometimes the replacement a localization team makes is also interesting, but often not.

I decided on a whim to start playing Breath of Fire IV and I really enjoy the art style, probably some of the strongest PS1 aesthetics I've seen. The translation also seems to be high quality, but obviously I can't know unless I've played it in Japanese with the knowledge to understand it. Does anyone happen to know if it is well-translated? Also this is my first real foray into this series The music is also really good

I've not played it myself, but I think I heard somewhere that a death scene in the English version was somewhat more vague than in the Japanese version. Since this is a death scene we're talking about it should be obvious that you won't want to look it up if you don't want to be spoiled.

I started playing it myself as well. The most obvious difference has got to be Scias. Considering he speaks with a stutter in the English version, but he doesn't appear to have a stutter in the Japanese voice clips. Apparently he was a drunkard in the Japanese version.

I don't know which one's uncensored, man. I don't know what to make of this one.

Ultimately, I think I'd accept the left over the right. I can take beheadings but when I watch video footage of people's limbs being twisted and broken in unnatural ways, I just cannot bear it. I've seen videos on /fit/ of guys failing lifts and their elbows snapping causing the weight to fall on them or women locking legs on leg press machines and their legs giving way, causing them to go knock-knee'd and it's all horrifying. I still remember watching Re:Zero and watching Rem get her arms twisted and then watching her, with broken, twisted arms and legs crawl her way to Subaru to free him and that irked me severely.

How could the cultural differences between the west and the east lead to the west being more tolerable of decapitation than limb-snapping and the east being more tolerable of limb-snapping than decapitation? What a weird cultural difference.

I think you're just tired of "translators" being lazy, narcissistic, hacks who stole a good job because they have better social skills than they do artistic talent.

Also, you're pretty-much specifically pissing on the SNES era Squaresoft & Enix RPG translations (hell, two of your points come from Chrono Trigger). Believe it or not the censorship wasn't awful as the decades before it. Look at MGM's Tex Avery cartoons, that shit was controversial because moral guardians thought that kids would understand sexual visual gags so subtle that they make animaniacs look like south park.

Censorship was so heavy-handed back then because nintendo didn't allow depictions, -even words- of alcohol, sexuality, drug use, or religion. Then around 1995, when Killer Instinct was released, they actually loosened their censorship up.

The mentality of 90s censorship is so typically SJW, because the 90s is where the actual roots of SJW movements came from. 2006 was when they made their power grab because they saw "easy" money in vidya.

Well, the upside, they're finally finding out how "easy" their money really isn't and how easy it is to lose. They'd rather cheat than git gud.

>>16938499

Fun fact: Puritanism as a form of worship is more-or-less completely fringe now because it requires an actual covenant to partake in- far too much effort for how more accessible other forms of religion are.

The leftovers of the worst of puritan beliefs aren't necessarily the fault of the religion itself, but the abusive, paranoid followers that beat their children with their beliefs. I don't know for sure. but I'm quite certain that fundamentalism is what remains of majority puritanism.

>>16938602

>>16938562

It's just different things cause different people to have pain- whether it's real or not. The thing about censorship, is that it's always a bunch of power-hungry assholes vowing for it.

When they say "The road to hell is paved with good intentions" They mean "Assholes use good things, and walk all over them to get where they want, even if people get hurt,".

Whatever they are, I can't stand their shrill cries of "think of the children". With the invention of the internet, and wide availability of information, those days of innocence are forever gone. It's better to tell children the truth now, or they will only be exploited. Trying to protect them through censorship is a complete waste of time.

>Trying to protect them through censorship is a complete waste of time.

Exactly.

And the thing is, it was never about protection. Nintendo did this censorship because they wanted to avoid being the target of outrage culture, so they initially bowed to it. Those outragers did the same shit their kids are doing now- just under different pretenses.

The best way to deal with this shit? Call it out, point out the hypocrisy of these people, be resolute in your work, get everything in writing, and be sure your provider has your back. If they don't have your back, they're a part of the problem too, and need to be held as such. But most importantly, be kind in all of this- nothing paints your enemy in a more worse a light when you're helping your fellow man up, and they're projecting their own misdeeds onto you.

So, I just finished it. I gotta say that final boss was an absolute beast, you've got to be on your toes at all times. If I had a complaint about it, it's got to be how you can't go back to explore earlier areas after a certain point.
