Their character creation has an in-game reason for why it exists and why it allows a broader range of options. So what? Plenty of other games tried to incorporate some kind of lore justification into how you can just switch your character's appearance. Divinity: Dragon Knight has an Illusionist that can freely change your appearance, including changing your gender, for instance.

No but what we have seen so far and what has been talked about implies a huge emphasis on the story being really interesting. Watch a bunch of gameplay videos of the very little they release so far (and even that was work in progress) but still, the devs say a lot that makes it seem like the care about the story and that it wont just be a dumbed down gameplay only adventure.
This gives me confidence in the game because the game play while only secondary to the story and all the cool choices you seem to be able to make, is still pretty badass and detailed. So story seems to come first, but the game play still looks awesome anyway.

Fascinating way to phrase it, because now i realize why those old RPGs had so much more depth and were so fulfulling. I've liked tabletop, and in a way I often wondered how vidya RPGs could even work out when even with actively participating humans railroading is easy to slip into for some.
Yet it's actually so clear! Even a very linear story works in vidya, because its not the core of the player's decisions and role-playing, and perhaps rarely ever could be. Instead of deep interactivity in the story then, the specific skills, actions, and active problem solving are how the player expresses their character. Whether a game acknowledges playstyle or not, the player knows how they are acting as a character.
The player is actively immersed most when they simply need to try to solve a problem personally, and are rewarded for cleverness and alternative methods that they thought up themselves (or as their specific character would think). Interestingly, even highly writing-driven RPGs like VtMB are actually secretly doing a lot of the above.
To think that cyberpunk devs will pursue an action-adventure, in which they simply tell a story like a movie, and be satisfied when there can be so much more interactivity from the player in solving problems… it is such a shame. Why not simply make an animated movie then, or abandon the pretense of an open-world that exists solely for the illusion of interaction?

I think the thing people forget when it comes to old RPGs that do orient from Tabletop is that the best tabletops were designed from the start to have a few side quests to go explore.
Even easier when you're dealing with predefined characters. Baldur's Gate ( though, moreso with 2) did a pretty decent job of this by planning for character specific sidequests that were integrated into the main game. First game did have a dorf related bonus if someone picked him though.

I am also a tabletop player so my perspective on RPGs is informed by that. Action RPGs are not really truly unique as far as video games. They give you mechanical options, but typically not narrative ones. The mechanical choice in an action RPG is the same as choosing to kill a group of imps in Doom with the rocket launcher as opposed to the super shotgun, except extrapolated. There isn't anything inherently wrong with this. I love Doom and action games. However, the "interactive storytelling" genre is truly unique to tabletop games and vidya and thus deserves to be preserved. No other medium allows you to both tell a story and write it at the same time, in ways that surprise you as you write it.

To stress the meaning of my thoughts, though, I think some of the difference is arbitrary. Genuine, widely free problem-solving is problem solving, and so going for an action RPG, whether in tabletop or vidya, simply necessitates designing the problems and mechanics around them. Maybe a bit reductive of me, but I just found it intriguing because it starts to clearly delineate "game" from "prewritten story", and shows why action RPGs are perfect for vidya.
Or to rephrase: the "story" you write in an action RPG is one told in actions – a story told in how you sprayed pepper spray to bypass a laser, and climbed up some odd way, overheard a conversation, poisoned some food, and so forth. When I was studying game design, we called unexpected systems or challenges that players create "emergent gameplay," so I have taken to calling this "emergent storytelling" because you play a role through actions you take which the developers can't necessarily predict. Like in a tabletop RPG, video games should approach the issue of choice in RPGs holistically. To go back to Gothic 2, you could craft the story of a guy who doesn't give a fuck about pleasing anyone and just wants a payout by choosing options like "Just take the axe off a random dead orc" over the course of many of these quests, such as the alchemist one where you have to test a forgetting spell for him, but you can do so immediately and cheaply by beating the shit out of him and then casting it on him so he forgets. These are in addition to explicit narrative choices such as those in dialogue. The most obvious example of what I mean here is the "choose your ending" bullshit from Mass Effect 3; that was poorly done because your narrative choice was completely dissonant to what you did in the game to that point. If your game only had explicit narrative choices and no opportunity to express a play style, it would just be a VN or CYOA type of game. The designed choices that the devs put in the game supplement your roleplaying experience but it is also shaped by the ways in which you solve problems, as you stated. For example it would be rather out-of-place if you were making a sneaky character in Fallout, but just solved every combat encounter by spamming full auto bursts on small guns because you happen to have high Small Guns skill, and got into combat more frequently than you needed to. Sometimes if the game (or your character) is designed poorly, then you have to do this because the mechanical build you came up with isn't viable.

You still don't roleplay. You playing an adventure game and decide how you go foward with the game adventure. Not with your adventure.
By these modern definitions Batman:Arkham Knight would be an rpg, because you level up, you can decide your method to solve a fight and rarely the game allows you to decide the path you approach the target areas. Yet somehow we don't call the Arkham games rpgs.
For the other hand take Kenshi. The game drop you in the middle of a setting and offer you a fuck ton of method to express yourself or should i say roleplay. You write and play your own story, make your own fights, take your own path.
BG was succesful because it's back then give the player enough sandbox and blank points to fill it with their own style. You loved Arcanum because you were there! The victories in IWD were your victories. And people loved Morrowind because the "story" was your interpretation.
If they can't allow the player to be part of the world and express himself then it will be nothing just another GTA games with a cyberpunk setting. Could be good if they put enough charm like Vice City and san Andreas did.

Also heh, i'm pretty sure quite a few people did do that sort of thing in NV, given that small guns is one of the best skills in the game and bethesda sneaking makes it all too easy to run around a corner and resume sneaking, or gun down everyone in VATS in a few seconds.

Yeah i get it, but it will just make harder to explain why people angry about W3 or the upcoming 2077. Maybe mine wasn't the best explanation, but this is my best with my broken english. To be fair, even GTA is capable of emergent storytelling. It's mostly in the action, and the story going through your head as you're running over pedestrians, or listening to Willie Nelson while doing a drive-by. Not the actual "missions", but this unspoken element where all the other little pieces flow together and the developers haven't overtly scripted. And this is what Bethesda tends to be good at too, over the direct approach Bioware tends to take.

I don't necessarily disagree with your pic, but I think it's conflating sandboxes/simulationist games.
Let's take MGSV for reference:
In one early mission you're tasked with eliminating a Russian operative and you have ALL the following options:
>Going in guns blazing and razing his entire compound.
>Sneaking into said compound, and stealthily taking out only the commander.
>Sneak in and plant remote explosives after noting his patrol route.
>Take him out from afar with a sniper rifle.
But, then you also have all the non-lethal ways that I didn't even note down. So, bascially, MGSV is one of the best RPGs, ever :^)

The way I usually divide up RPGs is by categorizing them as:
Role-playing games, which are about stepping into a character:
>Witcher, Deus Ex: HR, etc.
Roll-playing games, which are generally more about mechanical depth and player skill:
<Dark Souls, Gothic, etc.
Moreover, these games usually share mechanics like stats and levels.

Even in the case of a preset character like JC Denton, your JC may be a very different person to your friend's JC based on the way you chose to play him. The opposite genre to this would be the cinematic game, where Nathan Drake is always just Nathan Drake.

A lot of WRPGs, in particular Bethesda ones, definitely leaves the character much more open to your liking. But, I would argue that the genre has always been about playing a role. It just happens that some RPGs already have a name and face ready for you. Yet, they still let you customize the character.

Cinematic are what I would label action-adventure games. Essentially, game experiences that leave very little open in the way of interacting with the story. And, are more about trannies golf-clubbing older men… I mean fun stories.
