Some guys decompiled Mario 64 completely and then made a port of the game that runs natively on PC. Pretty fuckin neato. If anyone wants to share the files here, please do. Otherwise it's just an interesting project to look at Nintendo fucking destroy

DirectX12 requirement, among many other dubious choices not the least of it being that it's a barebones port you can't even map controls for from the game itself and the framerate and everything else are the same.
Better than playing through an emulator but only barely.

Reverse engineering decompiled code isn't source code you fucking cave man, and is in fact legal which is why World of Warcraft private servers still exist. Decompiled code is an entirely original creation recreated from shit existing in your computer's memory. The source code can't be reconstructed without the source code files. The only thing they could be shut down for is redistributing the assets that the engine uses.

You know what I would really like: if people could reverse-engineer some of the older games from the 8- or 16-bit era. Especially 8-bit games really show their age and could use a modern face lift, like not starting out with only 30 health every time in Metroid. There is only so much that can be done with ROM hacks.
>>16934066
>Does this mean much to me if I'm not a nerd? SM64 emulates pretty well last I checked.
Emulation can be finicky and the game is limited by the limitations of the original hardware. A proper port can do pretty much anything it wants: new levels, new enemies, new scripting, new textures, multiplayer, or even completely original games based on the engine.
The people complaining about it not running on Windows 7 or having no extra features are missing the point. Once the game has been ported and the source code is available it becomes feasible to expand upon the codebase. Of course without proper source code and running on a proprietary engine it's dogshit, but it's a start I guess.

Not only is that well within the realm of possibility for a romhack, but there's already a romhack fixes just that. Hell, there's romhacks that add saving and minimaps for NES Metroid, I dunno why you think starting you off with full health is beyond the scope of a romhack, did you think they were just graphical modifications?

You gotta pirate the ROMs. That makes it legal. The same approach was used in other still running projects like PokeMMO and others.

Not denying that, I'm just pointing out that it gets progressively harder, the more you are trying to change, especially if you are trying to combine hacks. It's like trying to change a cake that has already been baked, versus trying to change a cake when you have the recipe.

Modding ROMs is just hex edits. Games haven't been programmed that way since the 80s. Unless some autist hero makes a tool that stores all the hex codes for various instructions in a list so you can use them more intuitively, your life will still be much more difficult. And even then you're still limited by the hex codes known by the community at that given moment.

Even then you would have had things like comments, macros and labels, all of which gets lost during the assembling process. Even if a game was written in assembler you won't have the exact source code when you disassemble it. It will be easier to figure out than if it was written in a compiled language though.

Oh yeah, it was definitely easier for the programmers back then writing in machine code for home computers because they had manuals and instruction sheets to tell them which hex codes to use. But it's the only thing that comes close to trying to fuck around with compiled code. It's like being a tech-priest in Warhammer 40k, trying to figure out how computers work 10,000 years after the original software and hardware developers died.
This reminds me of Halo PC modding before the team at Gearbox released their modding kit for Custom Edition. It was done entirely through hex edits and tools became steadily better over time as the community discovered more and more hex codes that allowed them to tinker with aspects of the game.

A more complete understanding of how a game is meant to function on the emulator potentially means more accurate and efficient emulation. It also means a more easily moddable and extensible engine to work with.
