Are there any specific game challenges or scenarios you'd recommend as a way to "spice up" a replay or another run? For example, a SL1 run of a souls game, a coleplay of an RPG (like a cowboy in fallout) or a melee only run of system shock. I'm looking for something to get engrossed in for the sake of novelty, not much else has captured my attention lately.

I always recommend playing Dishonored without killing anyone, even on the first run. For a second run, I guess playing without the X-Ray vision, though at least it's balanced by making your screen piss ugly.

Speedrun going to the CNPP in STALKER SoC wearing only the Sunrise Suit you can find in the Cordon and the weapons you're getting from the start.

Playing FEAR without the Slow-Mo makes the game a whole lotta more fun.

Self-imposed handicaps just turn the game into work. Playing through as a different character or class is usually enough for me, provided there are at least gameplay differences to be had in doing so, if not changes to the story.

You mean like a nuzlocke run in Pokemon? They're fun and make the game more interesting, and make you much more attached to your monsters.

In RPGs I like to do a "craftsmen" run if I can, where the only things I use are things I made myself (weapons, potions, etc.) and I have to go out of my way to gather the materials myself instead of buying them.

DQXI actually has Draconian Mode which allows you to turn stuff like this on, but I keep Shypox off because losing a turn to RNG is nothing but annoying bullshit.

Personally I enjoy playing rimworld more like the sims than dwarf fortress and only having a single character or a family to work with rather than an ever growing army. It really stretches out each segment of the game especially the later ones where things typically snowball and makes for some unique scenarios you won't come across normally.

For example I started this game I'm on now with a single loli and at one point she ended up dependent on both wake up and smokeleaf and after running out of wake up I found out that going through wakeup withdrawals and being high on smokeleaf at the same time puts your consciousness low enough to be incapacitated as well as if you're going through withdrawal from both. Since she'd die of starvation before going through withdrawals from both I had to make sure she smoked weed every day to not go through withdrawals from that and used the few sober moments where she could actually walk around to make meals and roll joints for the next day, if I didn't have enough food or smokeleaf stored I would've been fucked because there really wasn't time to do anything more in between weed comas. Thats just one instance of the plenty of novel challenges that I've come across playing rimworld that way and I'd recommend you try it out at least once.

Oh and if you tend to stick to one save for a long time like me then you should get the mod for pregnancy so you can have multiple generations. That loli I started with is now 25 and found her mother and father in that time who were ex-lovers so naturally her father proceeded to fill his newfound daughter with baby batter on a regular basis instead and now I've got a pair of inbred loli twins to work with.

i would agree with you if i was reductionist to a fault. the entire point of self imposed handicaps is to basically create your own skill ceiling to meet. that can be rewarding on its own, such as >>16933278

i think this is a good idea. what games are good for this? morrowind? divinity? what about spells? you have to make them as well?

I did this in Skyrim, Witcher 3, DQXI, etc. I'm also doing it in Outward at the moment.
