Pretty much EXACTLY like Barret, but in Barret's case he's misguided in that his reactor bombings don't actually help much and as soon as he finds ways to help people, he does so immediately. His anger's completely justified, his masculinity isn't negative and he actually has no reason to trust Cloud at the beginning because he's essentially hired a merc with no loyalty but to money. Pretty much all of his threats to Cloud are in fact so he can protect the people around him and it's clear he hired him on as a last resort.
As soon as Barret gets to know cloud, he opens up pretty quickly and even his battle quotes toward him get more and more friendly as the chapters go on, to the point that he and Cloud form a genuine friendship and the only reason you're seeing him acting so guarded is because you're a MERCENARY.
In fact in the Sector 5 Slums there's various people in the crowds you pass by that comment on Barret, saying stuff like "I thought he was scary, but I talked to him and he's actually a good guy" and shit, showing that there's more to him then how he initially acts towards you. In other words, he's a postive example of masculinity.
He's focused on using his toughness and ability to help everyone around him, and him having an enemy to fight does not make his masculinity "toxic".
But that's beside the point, they only judge him based on his skin color and his sex. His design. This shit's actually racist to do Barret like this.

He is a tough guy, though. The thing with tough guys is that the ones who are the most dickish and arrogant about it are usually the weakest ones, which is why they constantly have to flex and push their weight around to assert dominance. The true tough guy is self-secure enough in their toughness to turn into nice-guys and autists, because they have nothing left to prove either physically or egotistically. I think there are a few main factors from what I have learned:

Our medical system doing very little to promote overall health and instead just pushing drugs/surgery for all problems is a big issue too. It's all just layers and layers of greed and incompetence. Plus with such a massive population to feed we get a quantity over quality situation as well.

And just to be sure, no I am not saying we should all eat raw meat, we are not cats. That said, raw meat is perfectly digestible, it's the pathogens which might be contained inside the meat that's the problem. I once watched a video of Gauchos roasting beef, and the way they did it the fire did not get anywhere close to the meat, instead they left it at some distance and let the heat roast the meat over a long period of time. It came out really nice and juicy, and meat is the main food source of Gauchos. What's more, Gauchos are not an ethnic group, they are mostly a mixed-race culture, so any arguments that a special "Gaucho gene" lets them thrive on an unusual diet don't apply.
