Which is the better game, and why is it Final Fantasy Tactics?

Has anything come close [to Tactics Advance] since?

FFT isn't actually a good SRPG. Its busted beyond belief and has level scaling for random encounters.

Tactics Ogre.

>and why is it Final Fantasy Tactics?

I have to assume you're asking why they chose the name "Final Fantasy Tactics" and the answer is simply that it's a Final Fantasy game and the SRPG grid makes it more "tactical".

I tried both of these games and DnD tactics. I just couldn't get into them very much, I really wanted to like but the grind and or needing to know of some secret way to do something like class change or recruitment or some other shit kinda set me off.

I like both games and worlds. would love to a big budget squeal to either. my main gripe with FFT is that every vision of the game has some technical problems. the only port of the game still being maintained by SE is the wonky android version (updated to work on the latest OS but still no controller support! and they've never fixed the reverb sound effects)

So the only "real" options to play OG FFT is either the PSX version with a completely botched translation (or learn moon and track the JP version down), or the busted PSP version that has broken animations that require a fan patch to make the game even remotely playable (still no fix for the reverb sound effects) and the added cgi cutscenes along with old-timey english sounding script might also be considered downgrades by hardcore fans.

would be nice if we could get a decent PC port without Korean MMO sprites, vaseline filters, menus designed for mobile, added censorship and general brokenness that will never be patched by SE themselves. I wish we could have an "Open FFT" project like the X-Com fans have. I guess worst of all both series are basically dead with no chance of coming back….

D&D Tactics is highly pedantic about the rules (to the extent of making an apology ingame for failing to get a mechanic right (it was feat qualification in cases where you get 2 feats in the same level))

its greatest fault is in its menu interface, which presents things in an unnatural order

definitely takes patience to figure it out

Tactics Ogre you could be forgiven for not getting into; the first time a guy died on me he cursed my name for failing to provide proper backup. I think I dropped it after that.

as for Final Fantasy Tactics, well, if you couldn't get into it then it's probably not your genre. If you still want to give the genre a try, check out Monstania on SNES (you'll need a translation patch)

I've heard about Final Fantasy War Of The Visions (Brave Exvius). it "looks" nice but i'm afraid to try it out because I'm betting its not going to even be a real game with a beginning a middle and an end. I'm thinking its going to be an endless gacha grind fest like granblue fantasy. and perhaps the biggest problem I have is that at some point it will be removed from the service just like Mobius Final Fantasy and Imperial SaGa. (I can't stand the idea of putting time and money into a game just to have it deleted, its why i don't bother with mmo's) outside of all that… has anyone tried it yet?

I've been meaning to do a replay of "march of the black queen le" on PSX (I don't like the feel/speed of the SNES version and I think the PSX version has way better music) after that I was going to play the GBA and N64 offshoots (just got my N64 setup for RGB)

Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark pretty alright, but I went into it expecting a mediocre game. I wouldn't bother playing it at the moment, since they're apparently releasing a DLC soon that expands monster classes and adds new content. The gameplay was fine. The animations were off-putting and the story feels like it was written by an advanced elementary school student. I mean that - the writing is the absolute worst part of this game, by far. It's cringe-worthy at points. The music was pretty decent, though. It's very transparent about cloning Final Fantasy Tactics and Tactics Ogre, and even has some 'hidden classes' lifted straight from Tactics Ogre. I would say the game is worth pirating, but you might as well wait for them to finish releasing stuff for the game. It would be a much weaker game if it had practically any competition for new releases in the vain of Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre.

>>16929551

I didn't realize this actually released until a few days ago. I wanted to try it, but I read multiple people complaining that the paywall was very fast and very steep.

>Has anything come close [to Tactics Advance] since?

No, I haven't been let down by an SRPG in a while.

>>16929560

>is that a PSP game?

Yes, it's actually pretty good, provided you actually enjoy the tactical combat of D&D3.5E. It's a game practically designed for people who live in places where they couldn't get a group together, but kept reading the rulebooks and fantasizing about playing it. It's definitely not a beginner-friendly game, but if it's your kind of game, it's a rough gem.

>Ogre Battle 64

I fucking love the OST to that game. If I get some time, I need to webm some of the tracks. Despite it's shortcomings, Ogre Battle 64 was my favorite Ogre Battle.

I could not stand the animations. I read the story and couldn't stand that either.

How simple is it for people to try something just in the vein of the FFTA/2 bunch where it's just sort of "Here's an excuse plot for our SRPG stuff, have fun, do deeds, enjoy comraderie more than anything"

>>16929590

It was honestly just really poorly written. As in, I don't think the writer had actually written characters or a consistent story before. The dialogue is very low quality. It was really blatant early in the game when they're laying on the exposition, though as the game went on, it started to become less egregious. I assume that's because the writer was just getting better as they went. The story definitely doesn't rival the political intrigue of Final Fantasy Tactics or Tactics Ogre. It's more on par with a 90s Saturday morning cartoon.

I played the game when it first came out, and I remember there being talk about making a community script. I just tried to find it, but I guess it never went anywhere. If it is out there somewhere, or someone eventually came along and went over all of the dialogue, it'd be a much more recommendable game. Otherwise, you really just have to be able to stomach some real poor storytelling. I really had to push through it, and I feel like I can tolerate a pretty bad story for the sake of a game.

For a vague idea of how bad the story is, the main character is basically a walking judge, and just walks around and solves crimes and captures criminals. Her two companions are childhood friends, one of who is there for fun, the other is her apprentice. Story opens with the main character catching a criminal, who rubs it in her face that he'll just walk free. You take him to prison, and he walks free right in front of you, shocking the main character. He was also granted a mark that makes him a higher authority than her, signifying he is on a pilgrimage. She then follows this guy around (because JUSTICE), and despite not having the authority to arrest him, insists that if this guy attacks her, then she can act in self defense and kill him. She then just sort of stumbles into the evil plot. The twists are supposed to be things like the obviously corrupted/evil council members are corrupted, which you are supposed to be shocked to discover, despite a scene where a council member terrorizes a band of bandits by using his powers of teleportation to fucking drown them one-at-a-time. Or the people of the world are staging rebellions against the obviously tyrannical council that is ruling with an iron fist.

The story is my absolutely biggest complaint about the game. The animations were pretty poor and didn't have many frames. But the SRPG itself was actually pretty descent, especially in the late-game fights, arenas, and post-game. The dialogue is just painful. If there was any 'woke' shit in there, I didn't even notice it, for it was overshadowed by how badly written the story was.

>>16929600

I can't disagree in this case. Fell Seal would have been significantly better if they'd have just cut 80% of the story out. They spend way too much time trying to justify what's happening or explain connections between characters.

I felt that FFTA had rather mediocre writing but maybe it was just a shit translation… also they story was overly simply and I can't really say I liked any of the characters. (totally opposite of how I felt about OG FFT ) overall I liked the game play of FFTA… but not the annoying judgment system, that always seems like a broken gimick that never added anything to the game. I also din't really like the change in how jobs learned skills from items instead of just leveling up with JP

I would pick FFT as it has more abilites and broken combat system. FFTA will still be my favorite because of all the different races, classes, and general fun world building in the story.

Has anyone here played hellenica? I thought it was a pretty good TBS. Problem was you had to repeat levels and the dialogue is long and cringe.

I see. But then it's just advance wars with an isometric view grid then, since FFT has a lot of character customization while wars has none.

I'd say it's actually quite faithful and extremely close in spirit to the original, although it's very non-literal, so much the better given literal translation often sound more unnatural and awkward. I've given rough, more literal translations in pink.

To call it unfaithful, the lines would have to be altered to talk about feminism and LGBT rights, or some other random bullshit that wasn't in the game, like modern translations do. DQ7 DS had alterationas, for example, where party members would quip about feminism, and there was nothing remotely like it in the original

script. In fact most modern DQ localizations are almost complete rewrites, far from the original in spirit.

>あんまり、弟を甘やかすなよ。あいつだって男なんだ。

<Don't spoil your brother so much. Even he is a man.

>少し黙っていて。 弟はあなたみたいに血の好きな男じゃないのよ。

<Be quiet. My brother isn't a bloodthirsty man like you.

>戦いたくて戦ってるんじゃねえや。犬死にしたくないだけだ、おれは。

<I don't fight because I want to. It's only because I don't want to die a dog's death.

>あの人たちを当てにしてるくせに、偉そうな口を聞かないで。

<Don't talk big when you're relying on those people.

Langrisser is close; you buy units to assist your hero between maps

I can't remember if the dolls in Kartia are expendable or not. I haven't played it since 99, But I vaguely remember losing a bunch of dolls and rebuilding them.

The dolls in Kartia are definitely expendable. But they're created by summoners with mana or something. It doesn't work like Advance Wars at all.

>Fell Seal would have been significantly better if they'd have just cut 80% of the story out

But Tactics Ogre has like 900% more of it. I got bored way before 1st combat. FS is nowhere as bad in this regard.

Also you can skip most of it.

It's worth buying a cpu/gpu that can emulate it.
