Imagine how dry megaten would be without recruitment and fusion and all that.

>What are some other monster taming vidya?
I vaguely recall Dragon Warrior Monsters on the GBC being fun. It was a pretty shameless imitation of Pokemon, but some of the monsters were ridiculously OP. Kind of absurd.
Beyond that, I'm merely curious. Apparently "World of Final Fantasy" fits the genre. Never heard of this shit, but it strikes me as squeenix nostalgia-bait garbage. There are some "monster games that aren't pokemon" lists out there, so I'm going to do some high-speed dumpster diving to find out more. https://youtu.be/8Qc01J7CgwI
Fossil Fighter Champions: shameless donut steel of that one digimon dinosaur right on the goddamn cover. The concept of doing Jurassic Park for the express purpose of cockfighting is pretty ace though.
Youkai Watch: I guess it's pokemon by a different company and with a different aesthetic. I hear this one mentioned here and there as being good, but I have no actual details.
Ark Survival Evolved: You tame dinosaurs. Looks to be a western developer, so I guess it's less JRPG and more… minecraft? Or the "survival" element that minecraft maybe-sorta popularized or co-evolved with.
Slime Rancher seems to run with the "ranching" part of Monster Rancher. But does it have the cockfighting part?
Sonic Adventure 2: has some sort of minigame. I've heard of this shit, too, usually "for the love of god, don't mention the chaos."
DQM had one or more sequels, on the DS. Apparently the "breed different species together to create loathsome affronts to the almighty" thing returns.
SMT IV looks nice. Aesthetically, I mean. You get your slut-fairy and surely a number of other tittydemons with vagina dentata and extra arms. Maybe it's a shitty VN in practice? I've only played the 8/16 bit ones, where the fusion graphs are just complex enough to be interesting assuming you don't spoil yourself and go directly to the best fusions. Most combinations are garbage, or result in a very weak "default" demon, or one way over your level. But sometimes you can roll that "default" demon with a demon that has become obsolete, and sometimes get an unexpected high-end demon you couldn't have got just by fusing your regular, obviously-useful dudes with each other.
