What are you crawling? Personally I love Caves of Qud, the amount of stuff you can find, skills and mutations among other things, makes it a really fun experience. Sure, you're pretty much fighting koblods armed with bronze daggers in the beginning, but it isn't long before you can start carrying around modified sniper rifles and teleporter units. It's also fairly easy to savescum if you are a filthy casual like me.
By the way, anyone here played Cogmind? I really like the look of it.

Tome never really did it for me. I dunno, it feels like all the gear you find is fixed too the danger level of the area you are in. In say for example dungeon crawl stone soup, it's entirely possible, although quite improbable, that you'll find a pearl dragon armor on dungeon floor 1. There is also very few ways to grind outside the quest areas, there is no way to grind yourself up to level 30 before entering the first quest area.

I found a mint superbike in the second floor of a car showroom last night. Couldn't figure out how to get it out, so I busted out a motherfucking reinforced window **with a goddamn sledgehammer, eventually* turned on the engine, set it rolling, and dove off. The landing busted the gas tank, so I replaced it with a storage battery and an enhanced electric motor. Added a solar panel on the back, so now it goes 270kph and probably never runs out of fuel.

I guess my advice would be to try whichever one looks fun to you. If you like highly structured and detailed challenges in a well-described game, you might want one of the old school ones like Nethack or ADOM. If you would like to just tool around learning and doing stuff without too much time pressure and can tolerate marrying a bear or panties as a weapon, Elona+ is what you should try. If you want ones that sorta boil the genre down to the bare metal, Stone Soup or the newer TOME versions do that–not that they have no lore or such, but they're light on Nethack-like dev-team-thinks-of-everything cuteness and heavy on basic gameplay. CDDA is great for very patient people who like survival games and apocalypses. An anon's been leaning on Caves of Qud pretty hard recently–I've never played it, but maybe it's a good representative of the genre? I dunno. The talking bears and xir plant beings kinda turned me off of that one.
As a genre, they're pretty much all meaty enough that you'll have plenty to figure out even after playing for a long time. You'll probably have to play with a wiki or be prepared to invest a lot of time into learning how things work, because most of them (as you probabl know) get unforgiving either early on or in the midgame.

I started with a Nethack fork called SlashEM that adds a lot of goofy shit, and god damn that was fun. I'd play monks, who in SlashEM get limited-use techniques that you'd have to input a button command to execute, like how Sabin in FF6 had to do Street Fighter inputs to do his blitzes. Fairly OP, but when you don't know what the fuck you're doing that's ok.
I must have died a hundred times just fucking with shopkeepers. It was so exciting to get down to the town levels for the first time. I'd get killed FUCK BEES and think THAT WAS SUCH BULLSHIT IT WAS SO HARD TO GET THAT FAR FUCK THIS GAME. And then try again five minutes later, and get a little further, and find some other novel way to get killed.
CDDA was even harder, but I was less frustrated and more confused by what the game was expecting me to do. And yet, I could see that the possibilities for not getting myself killed were endless, so there must be a way to survive. That made it extremely compelling.

Been playing lots of Elona recently (+Custom-G Beautify). For the first time ever i decided to do a crafting run and it was so successful i somehow magically gained combat stats out of nowhere. I really don't fucking know why my dexterity is so high, this game at times is a mystery.
Kept making food out of fish i caught and been leveling only negotiation to ramp up price of my cooked dishes. Now i have to walk all over town to sell my sushi delicacies, on which i managed to acquire a farm, but haven't figured out where to get seeds yet (i'll look up the wiki later, i am just sad i couldn't find Kumiromi shrine yet).
Honestly this game is all in one package when it comes to features and i am not sure i can ever return to other roguelikes. The only other one i liked was DF Adventure mode because of detailed combat system and full random world generation which neither Elona, Adom, Qud or ToME have.

Raising any skill gives experience for the stat associated with it, and high quality food raises stats more than uncooked or low rank food. Cooking, negotiation, fishing, etc. are all very powerful long term investments and investing in every magic shop lets you buy potions of potential en masse. Elona (particularly +) is basically the power trip at the end of a roguelike where you've maxed your level and are ready to secure a win except it goes on as long as you want it to, although there will always be some content that will hurt even broken characters, like chaos forts and certain friendly NPCs that only exist for postgame players to challenge.
Vanilla Elona and variants close to it like Omake do have an extremely brutal grind though. the platinum coin cost to train skills starts high and scales up and up, and ways to increase stat potential are extremely rare.

I believe you can actually save outside a town with a campsite, but I guess you only get that ability later on than I've played so far. It's a real pain in the dick not being able to save and quit whenever, but I suppose the devs don't want you locking yourself into a hopeless situation on accident.
The game clearly has a lot going for it, but it's also clearly unfinished. The overwhelming majority of skills aren't available yet (see pic1). No character creation, just four premade characters– three of which are human and one of which is a dwarf. I guess they cover all the basic roles the game currently has to offer. There's also the prologue character, but you don't play as him for long. Gameplay-wise it feels a lot more like a properly fleshed out RPG than say ADOM, which is really just a traditional roguelike with some RPG bells and whistles thrown on. A roguelike with proper RPG mechanics is something I've been looking for, so overall I'm pretty pleased with what's available right now. With more content and tuning existing mechanics I can tell it's going to be really fucking good. Mod support would also be great as the framework is solid.

Played the first one because it's free on GOG. Try it out if you want to judge for yourself, but I found it pretty meh. Movement is painfully slow, the automap is a skill you need to invest points into, combat is pretty meh, and there is no real music. If it wasn't for the slow-ass movement speed it could have been a neat little time waster to get on sale, but as it stands it's not really worth it.

Not sure if everyone is aware, but the guys who made DoomRL made a game called Jupiter Hell, which is basically copyright-friendly DoomRL, with full 3D graphics, sound and music. It's mostly unchanged from DoomRL and has good peripheral support for controls and is native to every platform. It has a few noteworthy changes: the stance system was removed, but in its stead you get the ability to use corners and boxes/barrels for cover, and you can do nothing for a turn to get a cover bonus and aiming bonus. Speccing into dodging while running is still good though. They did clutter the game slightly by breaking bullets out into .44, 9mm and 7.62mm though, but there is a skill one or two of the classes can get which lets you convert ammo into ammo for whichever gun you're holding when you pick it up. Finally, the protagonist is a fully voiced Duke Nukem type instead of a mute. His lines aren't too bad and there are options to make him mute if you so desire.
