Terraria loses out simply by virtue of being limited to two dimensions. To those who just want to build (which is by far the majority of Minecraft's audience), the 2d nature of Terraria is too limiting. The best you can do is some 2d pixel art, but you can't exactly build a recreation of a 3D model or anything with much real depth. The people who play Minecraft for the combat and the bosses are like people who play GTA for the deep story.

Thing is Terraria has better " build resolution" than Minecraft (a MC player is 1 x 2 blocks compared to a Terraria player is 2 x 3 blocks which gives finer grain). Terraria lets you rotate blocks freely and to transform them into half slabs and slopes/stairs on the fly, it also has pain and a myriad of furniture types and light sources and even has colored lighting.
The 2D thing may be a sticking point for some but vanilla Terraria allows you to do things that are impossible in vanilla MC.

Problem is, most of those had old autism sims at minimum had various tools capable of editing multiple voxels at once, selecting/moving/rotating large volumes with a marquee, and copying/pasting them. Most of the games Minecraft stole from, such as Dwarf Fortress, also have such capabilities.
Basically, if other spergblox sims are MacPaint, Minecraft is Macpaint with every tool other than the pencil removed.
