Eve will either chew you up and spit you out within a week or it'll take control of your life and you'll never be able to leave it for long. Its biggest draws are that almost every part of the economy is player-driven, and that it has a massive focus on PVP. Some dude has to mine ore, refine that ore, build your ship using the minerals from the ore, then do the same for every module you might want to put on it. Then, no matter where you are or where you're doing, somebody else might decide to come and blow that ship to bits.
Eve is a very slow game, but its highs are some of the highest I've experienced in a game because of the anticipation and because of the risk of losing shit you've worked so hard to earn.
Goonswarm is the dominant force in null security space right now and has been for a while, but they don't have a lot of direct influence outside of null, so they're never a problem for most people.
Trolling/scamming/backstabbing/etc is very much alive in Eve though, and is completely acceptable, so some amount of paranoia is healthy.
Honestly, if it sounds interesting, just jump in. There's a free to play status that's pretty generous, and you can use someone's invite link for a little skillpoint boost starting out.
