/v/ Remember when game journalists said Facebook games like FarmVille, mafia wars and weed wars were supposed to be the future of the video game industry? I still recall GameStop telling readers to sign up for Social media sites like Facebook for free video games.

Were they really wrong tho?

I'v never actually played FarmVille but just from looking at a screen shot for 5 seconds. I see what there currently is.

FarmVille it looks just like every other Mobile game that is addictive and wants to manipulate you to eventually buying premium currency with real money, that is how every single free to play game on Mobile is made, That model of premium currency got introduced to console/pc gaming slowly but surly to the point where now we are lucky if anyone even complains about not being able to assess the full fucking game they paid full price for.

The name may chance, Premium Currency, Loot Box, Battle Pass, But the idea is still the same.

Yo-Kai watch would’ve been successful in the west if it was called Ghost watch. It has a marketable pun and sounds catchy. Now Yo-Kai watch fandom dominated by people with fart fetishes. Not even kidding. Even in Japan, yo-Kai fart fetish made up good among of the hentai. Farting fan service has even been tone down in the west. Kodama Fumika/Katie shakes or stick out her butt after farting in the Japanese dub.

I remember watching the ED for the Yokai watch anime years ago and it still has stuck with me as maybe the worst thing to come out of dubbed anime.

The atmosphere is a horrifying blend of "Junior" cartoon programming blocks, anime autism, and gross-out humor worse than anything the 90s could have dreamed up.

One verbatim quote from it: "Why does my poop stink so badly?"

What are you talking about? Where do you think a lot of the devs making mobile gatcha shit cut their teeth on or referenced? Shitty browser based games that don't need high end PCs or consoles that made money bilking people with little experience in gaming. My dad is still playing a shitty browser "space sim" and spending money to one up other boomers when he could easily just play something better like Starsector. All of the disgusting shit they've done and still do we're copied into the mobile arena and made 10x worse since the barrier to entry is even lower with smart phones.

Well, in a way they were right. Mobage follows a fairly similar formula as far as gameplay loops go.

OT: I went through a few older game magazines I had laying around fairly recently, and there was one comparing WoW to Everquest 2. One of the things they mentioned was that WoW had shallower systems (I want to say they were talking about crafting specifically), which could potentially lead to less staying power for it. And look how that ended up going.

>>16916040

I feel like VR's real issue was lack of a big title around the time they were really pushing it hard is what ultimately caused it to fall into gimmick status rather than a proper contender in the industry. If Alyx came out in, say, 2013 or so, it's very possible it could have been in a better position.

We lived long enough to see Shrek morph into something wholesome when it started out being edgy. Shrek a series that celebrates masculinity, traditional family values, and friendships. You don’t see that in western cartoons now. With zero irony I’m a believer being in a kids film now a statement of rejection nihilism and black-pill Reddit incel mentality. As well a celebration of heterosexuality.

The real problem with VR is that it's really fucking expensive for what you get.

To be honest, looking at VR games, setups and seeing how viva-project works so utterly well with VR, It honestly looks fun as hell and a neat addition.

But I am in no fucking way paying $600 for what amounts to a glorified controller set. That's why the Nintendo Wii succeeded so hard whereas VR is currently struggling- Wii is a full console with a full set of games to play with, from the start, and it doesn't fucking cost as much as your computer to use.

but then someone will say "what about google cardboard and smartphones"? The problem with that is…

>Smartphones at all

Smartphone apps do not attract core gamers, because shovelware sucks ass, and the company completely enables predatory development. Furthermore, it's notoriously unreliable, and the foundations are already crippled in an industry that runs itself on the "so fifteen seconds ago" mentality.

>Google is as bad as microsoft at software development.

Android's development model for each phone is literally "fork the OS for the hardware, fuck updating". This level of incompetence is most likely because google and microsoft swap people like bugchasers swap HIV strains. And microsoft's software management strategy is more like an abusive dad treats his kids than actual management. Seriously, look up Microsoft horror stories, the management there is straight up mean to the developers.

>>16917100

This is a problem that's not currently present but can exist down the line and poison the VR market. Given the history of companies essentially malnourishing themselves to get products out, poison would destroy them.

The problem is VR developers are all retarded faggots that can't design games for shit.

You got boneworks tism which has a million technical gimmicks that you either never really use or actively interfere with gameplay, and the actual game itself is shit, or at best in bonework's case a very VERY subpar clone of something that already kinda worked.

Or you've got physics object playground #2,147,483,647, which beyond somewhat cheeky dialog will only leave you wondering, why the fuck steam home hasn't been roided up into GMOD-lite yet.

And then there's Alyx, which is an okay at best game.

Everything else is in development hell or Zuckerberg bought it.

And released games aren't even safe either as beatsaber got bought up, and now there's a shitload of "Social integration" garbage crammed into it.

>Valve fucking up negotiations with literally EVERY MANUFACTURER which resulted in the Microsoft VR

never heard of that, but wouldn't surprise me with valve being valve. just look up what happened with the tf2 cartoon.

but I remember reading that htc kinda fucked them over in some parts (or was valve being retarded as usual and htc had enough of their shit so they both are to blame), which soured them enough to work with any hardware manufacturer that they build their own factory, which is part of the reason the index took so long and makes it so expensive - which is another valve retardation, I much rather have lighthouse tracking for privacy reasons alone, but if it's stuck with the 1000 bucks "pro" headset no one else will bother and rather adopt inside-out. instead of selling it off cheap making it the de-facto standard it's pretty much a technical dead end, which is another reason not to buy into valve shit if you're stuck with inevitably dead tech. consumers will always opt for the cheaper model.

to go back ontopic, vr is not even close fitting this thread. even if everybody stops playing vr vidya tomorrow there is still high enough overall industry demand (r&d, training, showcases during sales etc.) that the shit will be here to stay and worse case re-visited in a few years when it comes to video games.

Same even though I bought one to play Sega Superstars. It was a fun game, wish they had brought it to the Wii. Just replace the camera controls with waggle. I would say I'm looking forward to motion controls being gone too, but I actually like them on occasion. Simply having less of them now is good enough. I do wish for more PC hardware adoption to go with emulators, because I really hate the idea of not being able to play games after the hardware dies. When the Wii is dead and all wiimotes and sensor bars are dead, even with Dolphin some games will become unplayable or an entirely different experience. Of course some games remapping is already a good thing, like Secret Rings holy shit.

VR works fine for FPS, the real issue is tards using it for melee combat, you should not have a disconnect between your on screen movement and real life movement, but that's what happens when you hit someone in melee unless you have a lightsaber and cut through someone with no resistance. The crown for worst melee in vr goes to Blade and Sorcery however, since they decided to add a delay to attacks to simulate weight, which really fucks with your perception.

From the '80s onward 3D creators rich enough to afford it, from CAD engineers to CGI animators, have continuously used VR helmets, haptic gloves, 6DoF controllers, shutterglasses, clay sculpture with 3D scanning, etc.

Mature modern VR hardware definitely fits into that legacy

Depending on the quality of haptics you've got, not entirely. Further, VR is very similar to the 6DoF pointer and deep immersion techniques that have been with us since before the SGI era.

Does the XBOneX/PS5 actually have any hard compatibility barrier with their predecessors? Ad copy I've seen so far indicates they upgrade many XBOne/PS4 games, and that XBOne/PS4 can play most XBOneX/PS5 titles with downgrades. That sounds less like console generations, and more like PC.

Nintendo hardware can't do absolute position, except for rotation with sensor bar/Motion+, only relative velocity. So 2ish-3 absolute, and 3 more relative.

While yes rotation is the only thing a Wii remote can effectively track on its own though not especially precise with the original gyroscope, it can track position (surge, sway, and heave) while able to see the sensor bar, though for obvious reasons this wasn't heavily relied on.

Really only in the case of xbone/360 controllers, and that's only because microsoft is a total dick and the controllers refuse to trust a device over bluetooth if it isn't Win10 or Android, also never manufacturing the 2.4ghz receiver they used to use, and the few that actually got made being shit.

It's a literal toddler game with a toddler anime. It's less complex than the first pokemon games were back when those released. There never was any competition. Pokemon may be for 5th graders. It's still was never any real competition.

The fact that shills on it only sexualize every innocent looking anime scene out of context like they've never seen real porn before is not only very disgusting, it's kind of sad these people exist. Imagine watching something so childish that in hindsight you try to justify it by sexualizing it. It's so sad. There isn't even anything to sexualize.

There's not much market drive for VR at the moment and it's slow going. The only way VR hits the top is if they improve their headsets astronomically in both price range and wireless shit, and if they force a few deals with other corparations to produce a starting lineup that doesn't hit the wallet hard.

The fault actually lies with the current economy, publishing culture and so on. It's a complex issue.
