It doesn't really matter if its because of popularity or not, I'm pretty sure everyone has had a game that at some point they used to enjoy but now completely hate due to various reasons. Sometimes its because the nostalgia for the game wears off and you find things that are just shitty about it. Or because the community got super shitty or because some site you hate recommended a game you enjoyed. People have various reasons to dislike a game that they used to like. I know that i used to enjoy Sonic R because it was probably one of the few games i played as a kid before playing it later and finding out how slippery the controls are and how irritating it was the get the emeralds and finishing first. I also know that some people used to enjoy the Metal Gear games before 5 happened and how it outed Kojima as some hack fraud. There's also games people used to fucking hate but now they like them because of various reasons.

The only game I can think of is Undertale, I remember enjoying but after the community got more cancerous the more I started to hate it, for it's dumb jokes and boring gameplay. But there's a game that I fear playing it today, It's Sonic Heroes I fell if I play today I would start to hate because many criticize the game for It's slippery controls.

I used to like Smash Bros in the Melee days but I can't get into it anymore. It's just DLC cashgrabs now instead of having to do something cool to unlock characters. No more adventure either. Also the gameplay has barely evolved at, so it just bores me at this point.
I used to dislike Yakuza on PS2 because I was too dumb to realize you had to get health items from corner stores, and use random objects as weapons. Now it's one of my favorite series. Judgment was really fucking good.

Minecraft.
It was so new and fun looking back when I got it in 2010 as a 12 year old and so was Terraria, but Terraria took its development the right way instead of Minecraft, which stagnated for the most part.
But now its nothing but wasted potential filled with nothing but meaningless, stupid trashy features, or too little too late, like adding a single new tier of armor after around 10 YEARS of the game being available to buy. Meanwhile Terraria back in 2011 started with around 7 Minecraft as of now only has 6 armor sets armor sets and now has 67 total armorsets in the game for to use with probably even MORE to come next month.
I also realized how boring and slow the game is, especially at the start where you're punching trees and it just takes so long to do, everything is a slow process and is generally a fucking slog. Theres hardly any ambiance, theres rarely any music theres just animals and monsters here and there which also get boring after a while because theres so few and there never that much to see or discover after a few hours.

I used to not really appreciate morrowind because of how slow the game felt, It wasn't until soon that i slowly began to enjoy it because of mods and the fact i could manage the speed by attributing to the speed stat. I also used to hate Dead Rising 1 and 2 because I was bad at Time Management but those two games also grew onto me.

There is always going to be at least 1 Sonic game out there that someone is going to look back at and say, "okay maybe that one wasn't great"
I can still enjoy Pretty much every single Sonic game to a degree, Except Sonic and the Secret Rings. I enjoyed that game the first time I beat the entire thing, but a few years later I tried playing it again, I don't know how I was able too. The tilt controls just make the game fucking impossible to enjoy, everything else in the game might be fine, but when your Basic control scheme just "isn't good" then the whole game suffers. This is coming from a guy who Still likes Sonic 06, but even I can't enjoy Secret Rings.
On the flip side, The first time I ever rented Resident Evil 4 it was probably the first time I ever played a survival horror game, suffice it to say I wasn't good at the game. I got Raped during the opening segment where you need to hold out and survive in the village, and after dying what must have been only a few times, I gave up, stopped playing the game, put it back in the case and simply refused to play it for the rest of the retail time until we returned it. Fast forward some years, I hear from a top 10 video that RE4 is actually "The Best game on the Game Cube" That was enough for me to give it a second chance out of curiosity, and see if I was wrong.
Now that a few years past and I didn't Suck anymore, Yeah RE4 is fantastic, I had to have beaten it 10 times over the course of 2 years, I had a shitty memory card that would constantly erase my save data, but that was actually a blessing in disguise since RE4 is way more fun playing from a fresh save then it is playing New game+

For me it was Dark Dawn.
10 years of anticipation and fan memeing clashed with a game that basically threw everything before it out the window and turned its focus to new lore entirely.
I was reeeally disappointed on my first playthrough. They resurrected the franchise (which really only was 1 game technically) after a decade, only to let it die on a cliffhanger.
No really, more time has since passed than between 2 and 3.
The combat was also too piss easy for most of the game and it was way more linear than 2, also introducing points of no return for the first time.
Some 4 years later I played it again, and I must say I enjoyed it more with a more down to earth mindset.
Especially that it still "felt" like a proper Golden Sun game, from the music to the controls, to the visuals, it all had that distinct vibe.
Also I had 2 of my most satisfying boss battle experiences ever in that game. Final Boss on my first playthrough and one of the secret bosses in my 2nd, the one that you can theoretically fight before the final boss and I did with a HUGELY underleveled party.
If only they made it so post-game you can collect all the Djinni again if you missed em, and put it an option for HARD MODE. Oh, and also A F U C K I N G S E Q U E L. Then it actually would have been a good game, that just impossibly cannot please the fans after 10 years of waiting, like any game would.
Man, Camelot really only needs to let the fucking fan community put up a script that ties all the loose ends together. There are lore videos out there galore. You'd only need to watch them and write a scenario around them. No amount of "we are out of ideas" can justify that laziness. 10 years worth of Mario golf games should be enough to tackle another Golden Sun on the 3DS or Switch.

Not really a game so much as a genre, but I used to love JRPGs once upon a time. I'm not sure what made me come to hate them, but they're all a painful slog for me these days. The writing is never especially compelling, the gameplay is too slowpaced, and even if the OST's good I can just listen to the album.

I couldn't get past the interface and simplistic combat when I was a teen, but later on I completed the whole game and thoroughly enjoyed the writing, pacing and quest design. From a plot cohesion perspective, one of the best RPGs ever written that manages not to leave any loose ends while also leaving the door open for a sequel.

Similar experience here. I wanted to like Morrowind because of the cool environments and good music, but because I failed to grasp the basic RPG mechanics of the game for so long (namely combat), I didn't enjoy it until much later.
>Tribes: Ascend
Simply put, the game got better as time went on, but the devs handicapped themselves by launching with unnecessarily grindy unlocks for shit that should have been available from the start. By the time they fixed their stupid bullshit everyone had lost interest. All of the classic weapons should have been unlocked from the beginning, and all sidegrades and other bullshit would be the unlocks, much like TF2. Instead they gave you the bare minimum necessary to spawn as the 3 different armor types, which means there is no way for you to play Light armor without being a flagrunner, which is utterly impossible for a brand new player because they have no map knowledge. Also, the game launched with the bullet weapons being hitscan, if I recall right, which was complete bullshit.
>Like -> Hate
<Dota 2
The reasoning for this one should be obvious. But, oddly enough, I found that the community actually became MORE insufferable over time, rather than less. It was at its best during the "closed" beta. Sure, I can mute faggots, but when every casual all pick game has some faggot trying to boss the whole team around while half of his commands/advice make no sense gets really old after a while.
>Rainbow 6 Siege
Was fun when it just had the first wave of operators, then things gradually slid downhill as time went on. I thought it would get substantially better when they announced the recoil system change from "let's just jitter your fucking screen around randomly" to the crosshair actually reflecting where your bullets will go, but I was wrong. Still riddled with retarded netcode and perspective inconsistencies which prevent it from being truly competitive or skill-based. Also, Ubisoft becoming steadily more authoritarian over time didn't help.

I can't think of any games that I now hate, only games that I initially didn't like then later tried again and liked it. Despise is the wrong term, but any game I beat 100% I can never play again. Even something like OoT, my mind just plays through the game in about 30 seconds and I just think "is there any point in me actually playing the game?"
Exceptions are classic arcade games which always work. E.g. Galaga 88', TGM 3, Galaxian, Dig-Dug, Frogger, etc.
If more specificity is needed, Runescape (used to be fun when it was active with real people/friends–it felt like an actual world). Adventure Quest (now just feels like a grind). Maple Story 2 (feels like a grind).
The same thing happened with LttP and only attempting to speed run it gave me a little bit of feeling for playing it again.

On a similar note, I have spent literally thousands of hours playing Skyrim. I haven't gone back to a lot of games in recent times, but last year I wanted to replay Soldier of Fortune II because I had good memories of the game and hadn't played it in at least 10 years. I started playing it and instantly hated it, the whole thing felt like a clusterfuck and I didn't enjoy any part of it so I played a couple more levels to make sure it wasn't just some bullshit at the beginning of the game and stopped playing.
I guess another example could be Dino Crisis 2. I loved that game to bits as a kid and replayed it a ton of times, but then I got a hold of the first game and loved it even more. A couple of years ago I replayed both games, I still loved the first game but when I got to the second one I was disappointed because of the change in the atmosphere and depth of the story, and the controls were bugging me because they felt inappropriate for a game with so much action coming from all sides. Overall I guess I didn't completely hate it but I was rather disappointed.

There aren't really any games I used to like but now despise because if a game was bad it was pretty obvious to me. The closest I can think of are…
>Stunt Race FX
The framerate is way worse than I remember it being. It seriously runs at about 15 FPS and the game seems like it was designed to go faster so the race just happens in slow motion. It's very obvious now that I'm older but at the time I didn't even catch it.
>SNES Star Fox
Same problem, runs like ass. Also made 100% obsolete by 64, which is better in effectively every way.
>Lunar Eternal Blue
I learned about Working Designs and Victor Ireland. I need to play through the fixed hack version.
>Final Fantasy X
One of my favorite games, but playing it again, it just has too many cutscenes. I lose focus because of how bored I am due to spending so much time not playing the game. I just want to play the game! At least the postgame is better.
>Final Fantasy X blitzball
This is the biggest one. It used to be my favorite minigame, but I got so good at it and learned that passing all game is the best way to gain xp, so now it's a horrible and uncompetitive experience beyond the first game. It's also too easy to exploit the AI. There's little reason to make a mod either because modern games like Rocket League exist if I wanted to play that, and I don't.
>Elder Scrolls, the whole series
In this case, it's the reverse. I didn't like them much and now I do. I started with Morrowind and all the way through Skyrim thought it was meh. Really just mediocre. I kept finding all these problems. It's shallow, it isn't that interesting, it's generic, it's kind of a mainstream gaming culture, gamer girl, journalist friendly, "cake is a lie" game. But as time went on, I came to accept that it has an important place in gaming as a benchmark of an inoffensive western AAA RPG that doesn't age horribly.
>Fallout
Having no internet and nothing but a pirated New Vegas to play for days made me learn to love it.
>games I want to like but would never get really into because the communities suck
Pokemon, anything sci-fi, speedrunning and fighting games. If these games fixed their communities and booted the SJWs they'd be far more fun. But for now, whenever I think about playing these for more than a few dozen hours, I realize if I ever compete against others I'm gonna have a Discord full of retarded communists breathing down my neck and bugging me about shit when I just wanna beat them in a game, maybe win a few thousand bucks and go home. I wouldn't have a problem with it if they just got mad on Twitter, but people get banned from all events really easily. I'm not the kind of person to stay out of trouble very well.

As far as I know, there's only parameter restoration patches. WD chodesucking fanbase will not allow any fan retranslation to come to fruition, because Viccy's work is "beloved", everyone who speaks English needs to experience it, and therefore such an effort is unneeded, or something. I suspect if a retranslation ever not only occurs, but finishes as well, it'll have to be from anons, or some other rare group that won't cave to their screeching.

Because the core gameplay elements of most open world games are severely lacking. The best explanation I've seen is they're oceans that're an inch deep, once you've seen something in one place, all it is is that same thing copy pasted into a dozen other places with very little/no variation, no extension, no combination. Just doing it again, and again, and again, to pad out the time with barely enjoyable gameplay elements, but no complexity.
Consider the famous open world games, now consider what the gameplay loops of them are, whether it be crafting, or travel, or combat, etc. Think about the complexity or skill ceiling in them. Then compare that complexity to a game that's devoted to that concept and how much more enjoyable it is. Compare Dark Messiah's first person melee combat to any of the Elder Scrolls FPM combat, or DMC's combat to BotW's combat.
Open world games could be much, much more enjoyable if they put some effort into the core gameplay elements.

World of Tanks. I played it back in 2010's in my potato PC since i've always liked tonks and Panzer Front's archaic hardware is starting to take a toll on my enjoyment. I felt fun for the first few months until i reached the 7th tier and all my enjoyment starts to go down the drain. I played it on and off with my friends for friend's sake but after high school, we drift off each other and never played the game again. Afterwards i realized how crappy all my time spent playing that game, and i wished all those time spent come back to me. The only real good part that i can think of my time spent on WoT and it's forums is that it introduced me to Girls und Panzer.
<Disliked
I used to really hate DarkRP, Jailbreak and TTT in Gmod, scoffing it as stupid roleplaying crap, and i only played Gmod for dicking around in the maps. However in hindsight (along with some replays) it was actually really fun, and my revelation was that i was playing it all this time with the wrong mindset You shouldn't be an autist, and just play it to grief. Unfortunately, Gmod reached it's popularity zenith during the early 2010's so it isn't as populated as it was now.

–My appreciation for Tetris has been a roller-coaster. I have always hated Tetris for NES and GB as they had no lock delay and piece movement was slow as fuck, but then I enjoyed the TGM games. I hate current modern Tetris games like Tetris 99 (SLOW DAS, slow ARR, slow soft-drop to nerf twists, gay-ass garbage system that makes late-game a slogfest). However Nullpomino (fan-made Tetris clone) blows all official TTC games out of the water.
–I also hated Puyo because of Mean Bean Machine (no offsetting so first to 5 chains wins, can't rotate in tight spaces) until I played Puyo Puyo Tsuu.
–I didn't like Digimon World when it first came out because the game gave half-assed explanations about digimon care and evolution requirements, so mine would always die early and I'd often get one of the shitmons. I recently decided to give it another shot, but checking a guide for evolutions and extending lifespan, and it was an extremely comfy experience.

What is making me dislike R6 Siege more and more is the pandering to the esports fags. Ubisoft blacklists maps from being playable even in unranked because of "pros" bitching they are not balanced. They also nerfed Lion to the point of being as useful as recruit, and while I don't give a shit about Lion it sets bad precedent.

Between Redstoneshit and Noteblockshit, I can see why some people enjoy Minecraft. On the other hand, I can't understand Terraria at all. It's a half-baked action-adventure with equally half-baked crafting and not very fun building. If you want the adventure elements, there's hundreds of games from the 80s and 90s, and probably some indieshit too that does that so much better, where you're not bogged down by needing to grind resources. The little time I spent in Terraria, I had no interest in the slightest going for the bosses, that's just not why I'd play that kind of game.
And if you want the crafting, again, there's probably far better games for that. Sure, Terraria might have 60 armor sets but who gives a shit when most of them are indistinguishable in functionality from one another? And while the weapons are more unique, I could never get past the "haha lol le funny meme/pop culture reference" weapons, shit always pissed me off.
And while Minecraft is probably more intuitive than a 3d modeling program, Terraria is certainly less intuitive than the average image editor/pixel art tool, so even for just building I see more of a point in playing Minecraft.

Anon, if you can't understand it, why are you talking shit about it? You hardly even played the game or know what it has to offer, one can only get a true understanding of it if one played it for at least a while. I played minecraft for hundreds of hours so I know everything that it has to offer, which isn't that much at all. If its a genre or dimension about the game that you simply don't like then its fine, Terraria obviously isn't everyones cup of tea, but the game is overwhelmingly loved and sold over 30 million copies, much more than "some indieshit too that does that so much better", for a reason you know?
Because Terraria is one of, if not the absolute peak of what an indie game could be.
Thats how everyone who plays Terraria typically has hundreds or even thousands of hours in the game, its insanely addicting and replayable as hell, not to mention beautiful and comfy too.
>And while Minecraft is probably more intuitive than a 3d modeling program
Nigger no its not. Its cube legos. You just place different colored blocks on top of and next to one another.
>Terraria is certainly less intuitive than the average image editor/pixel art tool
Were you one of those guys who would call Terraria "2d minecraft" 9 years ago?
You should see some of the crazy things people built in the game along with all of the extra things people have to make builds such as actual furniture, multitudes of light sources, technology gizmos, and much more. Really, me describing it doesn't do it any justice to the sheer amount of substance the game has, especially compared to minecraft, also videos can do it much better than I can.

Team Fortress 2. Game really went downhill after the mannconomy, but Meet your Match just killed it. The match making servers barely worked, and when they did matches were far shorter than they used to be, and the community just evaporated. Valve does nothing but jerk themselves off to VR, a fucking card game nobody likes or even wants to like, and the occasional walking sim when they're forced to, so there's no hope of ever getting rid of that garbage. I tried to get into minecraft several times with no avail, while I've gone autistic on terraria several times. Minecraft is shitty for the sole reason that is 3D, your vision is always limited to first person, and your character's proportions are retarded 2x1 tiles compared to terraria's 3x2 tiles of character
This even apply to combat, minecraft combat is just fucking shit. Sure, Terraria is nothing to write home about, specially when melee devolves to ranged 2.0 and everything else is kind of shit unless you are in a group, with summoner making you feel less lonely, and all that is far better than Minecraft's combat.
I swear, a friend of mine even bought Minecraft for me after I told him I didn't play it just because I didn't own it, which is not true I could have just pirate it, but after he bought it I really tried to like it, but I just couldn't. Then I just went and downloaded terraria again and installed the mods.

All the community servers I played in are long gone, all the fun gamemodes were killed in the latest version in favor of hyperballancing the game for "muh competitive gameplay" because how dare anyone have fun in a game that isn't sanitized e-sports. The straw that broke the camels back was the nerfing of the movement system, fuck you if you want to avoid getting immediately slaughtered because one guy nicked you, gotta lose all your movement speed because e-sports. I just want my damn minigame and surf servers back, but minigames are dead because valve decided to remove fuckloads of features in go and surf became timed surf or nothing thanks to the exposure leafy gave it.

I refuse to give a penny to any company that would fire the most talented person on their team for wrongthink. Every time a leviathan carefully deposits me and my moth inside a solid structure or the game is still loading after 4 minutes, I can't help wondering if Subnautica would have released in such a piss poor state had they hired programmers based on merit and not on how many times they've virtue signaled in support of trans rights.

>Hotline Miami 2
This one actually happened mid-game for me. It was fun, somewhat bog-standard HM with a few new neat things (most of it which was functionally useless in the long run, sadly). Then you reach the halfway point and levels turn into gigantic shooter-fests where guns become literally the only option to survive, much less try and actually play the game.
Every single gun-centric character not only had the most levels of all characters, they also had all the worst levels in the game.
I beat it solely to finish the story, even then, the map editor only held me for about… a few weeks and then I just got sick of it.
>Binding of isaac (rebirth)
I love zelda, I love roguelikes, what was not to love?
RNG.
bad RNG can fuck your game over to the point where it's unplayable. The item pool is so bloated with trash items that if the player can't get a good build by the time they reach the womb, it'll be a nightmare. Especially if you get cornered by bosses with zero-reaction-time attacks, or attacks so wide you literally can't dodge it.
The devs wonder why people get into a "restart the game so often and hope you get an OP item" mentality.
>Getting over it with Bennett Foddy
This wasn't even for a game I played- which honestly, it's not worth playing. Go play Sexy Hiking instead. I just watched compilations of streamers raging on it, and got massive a schadenfreude high from all it.
Then I found out the dude who made it is (((a feminist))), has his balls deep into the journo clique, and all in all, has one of the most punchable faces I've ever seen on a human being. Never have I been so soured-in-retrospect about a game.
Oh, and bennett foddy hates people who view videos of the literal chatroom at the end of the game where you can brag how you beat the game. Of course, the game deceptively hides mouse-accelleration not only being a setting, but being enabled by default. Well, surprise, Bennett foddy is a fucktard that deliberately designed his game to emotionally manipulate people.

>Fallout 4
Same with me.
Glitches were apparent since the quest to restore the confidence of the galaxy news radio dude never triggered without cheats, thus ruining my survival run. I continued on anyway, it was pretty fun… until all factions were unlocked, and I got spoiled by a flaw of the game's writing.
That flaw is that the three major factions the game wanted you to play as were indecisive in their morality, and they all ended up being "Douchebags that occasionally do good things with strings attached", so my logical choice was the minutemen, since they were not written that way.
The warnings of the minutemen being boring trash were true. I can handle MMO-level grinds to an extent, but when you literally RUN OUT OF FUCKING QUESTS AND THE STORY DOESN'T PROGRESS AT ALL… I tend to lose my patience.
Bethesda has gotten exactly what it deserves, for everything it's done.
>Starbound
Goddamnit chucklefish, you are the fucking bethesda of wannabe-indie games.
Starbound is the premier example of idea-guy syndrome- where the game is staffed by literally one coder, and the rest is either artists or literal idea-guys. I fucking crowdfunded the game (never again) hoping for a terraria-like but better, and I loved it when it came out. It scratched my comfy space-exploration-game-itch.
and then chucklefuck used their millions to become a publisher and dick-around in their offices doing basically nothing, while one fucking coder struggled to do anything with starbound. Mecha update was neat, but it still has exactly the worst problem that starbound in general has: Nothing you get actually works that well, or is fun in the first place.
Chucklefuck stopped being indie the moment they started publishing games, and anytime I hear them say 'we're indie' I know it's bullshit.
>Payday 2
sunk a shitton of hours, loved it, but the devs have a bad habit of "breaking the game to fix an issue".
I hated the stealth changes, because I liked the feeling of "we own this place now, let's cash out" from old stealth mechanics, but I could tolerate changes they made.
Once they completel overhauled combat the first time, I dropped that shit like a hot rock after P2Winshit happened. I came back to communities to look at story changes, and found out the story (what little was there) went completely fucking bonkers while I was gone.

Other games I can think of:

>Def Jam: Fight for NY. I was never fan of hip hop but liked the gameplay. Now, I find the loading time atrocious, there is no retry button, and reality kicked in so hard, that I find the gangster attitude really embarrassing.
>Mario Kart Double Dash. To me, the worst Mario Kart, with ear-torturing music and mostly awful tracks.
>Street Fighter 4. After BlazBlue, I can never return to SF.
>any Pokémon game, the only Pokémon games I own are Blue and Stadium. I hung out with Pokétubers, and now I hate the community and games even more. Those retards watch other people trying to catch a shiny for HOURS as if they have no life.
>Metal Gear Solid 5, once I realized what I'm doing in this game I stopped and never touched it again.
And most recently, Killer Instinct. I own the SNES version of Killer Instinct and I'm a huge fan. But recently, I played the Arcade version for a whole day, and I can't return to the SNES version. The watered down visuals and animations, I can't unsee it.

Got cockblocked at noob bridge the first time, and dropped the game. Heard a track of what I thought was from the game (bulletproof & Panic-stricken), so I decided to scour through the game to find said track.
What I ended up finding was a fun game, with very very solid shooting if you pick up an actually-accurate rifle. Artifact-hunting was my favorite method of making money, and it was immersive as fuck. Ended up getting to the true end purely by accident. The twist about strelok was magnificent- had me completely fooled even when I read about information on call of pripyat.
>Lennus (Paladin's Quest)
A quirky, fun, and surprisingly horrifying little game. Artstyle is underrated as fuck even if it uses blue/yellow/green/purple as its main colorset.
As a kid who was used to playing Final fantasy & breath of fire, I couldn't get into Lennus that much because the game itself is fucking brutal in the midgame. I ended up dropping the game when I got to Saskuot, but got back on board and found out just how fun the rest of the game is.

Far as anyone knows, RAID was quietly cancelled and the developer is apparently still alive working on a new project(according to a RAID mod on steam, so who the fuck knows for sure.). Same with Walking Dead, except it wasn't nowhere near as quiet. The game straight up bankrupted the company, and it was shit on so badly the IP holder had to force them to stop updating the game so it can just go the fuck away.
>can you explain in-depth at how much damage they’ve done to the game?
I don't think there was anything especially egregious after the Drills, except the H3H3 character pack. They basically just went on to remake all the Payday 1 levels while adding in some conspiracy shit involving the Dentist.

only thing that comes to mind is God Hand. When i first played the game i was like:
<tank controls
<MC occupies to much of the screen
<no blocking
<over the shoulder camera on a beat em up game
<no crowd control moves
<first 2 thugs mopped the floor with me more times that i'm willing to admit
<button mashing QTEs
<stupid nonsensical story
<bare bones ultra basic backgrounds that look like they're from the PS1 era
<no combos like in Devil May Cry, Gulty Gear or many other beat em up/ fighting games
<git gud and the game punishes you with higher difficulty
But then i kept playing because i refused to accept defeat from the first 2 thugs and i became like:
>tank controls are perfect for one on one fights
>get a perfect view of the fights thanks to MC and enemy models being so large
>dodging punches and kicks like Neo dodges bullets
>360º radar more than makes up for the tunnel vision of the camera
>lots of crowd control moves
>the more thugs to fight with, the better
>button mashing QTEs are actually hilarious no matter how many times you do them
>stupidly FUN nonsensical story
>background don't get in the way of the ass kicking
>make combos however you want, unlike anything else seen before or after on any game
>git gud and the game rewards you with higher difficulty
i don't know what to compare this to
it's like something clicked in my brain and i suddenly went from:
<what the fuck am i playing?
to
OH MY FUCKING GOD THIS SO FUCKING AWESOME!!!

Have you done 100% completion anon? It takes a while. Unlocking all evolutions and winning all cups is kinda bothersome, but DV chips are great help. It's also very satisfying when you finally wreck Penmon.
My only complaint is unlike most RPGs, you can spam items in battle one after another without drawbacks, which combined with the 99 per item cap ensures you'll never run out of HP/MP as long as you farm enough money. It's so bad someone uploaded a 3-hour video of a max stats baby-stage digimon chipping the final boss to death.

To me building in a 3D world is clunky (even with noclip). Terraria feels more intuitive for me, and you can adjust blocks so they look prettier (slopes, curved edges). Not to mention the huge variety of furniture and decorations it has.
The other big difference is combat:
>numerous different weapons which varies gameplay quite a bit: swords, grenades, axes and spears, boomerangs, bows and crossbows, guns, yoyos, etc. some projectiles bounce off walls, some penetrate enemies
>a fuckton of accessores which helps doing different things not feel so samey: flight-enabling accessories, specialty-boosting accessories, debuff immunities, knockback negation, building-related accessories, etc.
>combat is more engaging. Dodging attacks and using terrain to your advantage are integral parts of gameplay. Hooks are a very neat mobility tool. Potions have cooldown to discourage tanking through enemies
Though I get that Terraria's wiring doesn't hold a candle to Minecraft's redstone, I personally don't care too much for the building aspect.

The main thing that keeps me from fully enjoying JRPGs is I can't refrain from savescumming (e.g. figure out boss's patterns, strengths and weaknesses, reload, respec party) which feels like cheating.
Also fuck games where there's absolutely no indication that there a new event came up (most likely permanently missable) and your only way to find out is to backtrack to all places you've been to and checking every nook and cranny.

I used to be a JRPG fag, and I still can enjoy it now and then, but I've put myself in a position where I don't have much access to console/pc-gaming daily, and tried to fill the void with mobile gaming, which dulled my likeness for grinding, character building and pretty much anything without as much pick-up-and-play as a fighting game or so.

Dark Souls 3
I still love them all, but 2 and ESPECIALLY 3 lost alot of the magic for me because of the bonfire placement and the fact that you could teleport to any discovered bonfire from the get go.
I mean come fuck on, in Dark Souls 1 it was such a bitch trudging around, collecting souls, dying, encountering terrifying enemies, basically not having a clue what's going on, but when you stuck it out and discovered short cuts(sometimes HUGE) and managed to hang onto your souls long enough to get to a bonfire it was 10x more rewarding. I was way more motivated to explore, and way more stressed out deciding whether or not i should risk losing my souls trying to find the next bonfire or give up on the progress I've made so far in fear to spend my souls and try again later.
Not to mention having to run between bonfires traveling the world seamlessly(unless you count frame rate drops) being forced through so many memorably difficult encounters.
In Dark Souls 3 we got "phew those guys sure were difficult, it's a good thing I'll never have to see them again" and "aw man this boss sure is tough, it's a good thing there's a bonfire right outside the door and literally another one like 10 yards away for some reason."
I played it, put quite a few hours into it, enjoyed it, but after thinking about it for a while I can say that was what ended up leaving a big damper on what should've been the best and last souls game to top off the the trilogy(quadrilogy?)

I stopped a replay of DS3 after I learned that you are railroaded to fighting the brothers by a locked door. That locked door is only unlocked by an optional white phantom that only appeared if you beat the other three Lords of Cinder first and actually appeared on your screen as a character if you summoned him for assistance.
That railroading was so on the nose I quit my second playthrough then and there and haven't re-started it since.

The signs first started to show with AotA with Artorias' sword, though that may be excused by it being an exception rather than the rule it was in DS3.

I tried to get back into Runescape
With all this free time I saw an opportunity to enjoy a MMO I used to play as kid
While it was enjoyable at first, doing quests and leveling up skills, seeing myself progress
Now it's turn into a hellish nightmare, instead of playing for "fun" I mostly focus on trying to get the most efficient gp/hr
Someone in a cc (clanchat) recommended that I sell everything and restart a new account as an ironman (Haven't done a whole lot, mostly the f2p quests and heroes guild quests), most of my skills aren't that high with magic being my highest in the high 60's, cc said if I was an ironman I wouldn't have to worry about making money as I can't buy/sell/flip at the g.e.
I'm very cautious about what they're suggesting but if I did I'd have enough gp for at most 3 or 4 bonds since they're so low right now and can gift them to the ironman, honestly feel very burnt out from farming gold and trying to play efficiently instead of having "fun"
Thanks for reading my blogpost so far

Dota was originally a collection of characters from different mods put into one game. You use to be able to fuck people over with obscure and non-meta builds. It's not the case anymore thanks to comeback mechanics, safety nets and buffs to HP among other things. Dota 2 was fun at first for this reason, but now it's cancer. You prob didn't play it when it was in beta or you weren't good enough to play outside of the meta.

>XCOM: Enemy Unknown/Within
When the game first came out, I was so excited that I punched out of work at the exact second I could, drove home at a regretful speed, and played the game all night. After a few hours, I just kind of accidentally beat the game. I was so desperate for a new X-Com game that I enjoyed it regardless. I got the expansion and I even played Long War. Fast forward to today, the best X-Com game to come out is just X-Com but open source, and everybody is cloning modern XCOM's shit combat system.
>Path of Exile
Talk about a game ruined by patches. Leagues were cool at launch. Then they became shallow excuses to stuff random content that never mattered or fit the game. Then they tried doing major game overhauls through leagues, which were always half-assed. They would always go to the forums or the subreddit and cry about how much work it takes to get everything ready for the next 3-month window, which is why everything always launches broken or unfinished, and never acknowledge that they're the ones holding themselves to the arbitrary 3-month window. You STILL have to use third-party tools and websites to participate in trading. And to make things worse, the game itself isn't even fun anymore. It's just clearspeed: the game reaching it's obvious extreme finale.
>Tabletop Simulator
I've played this game for almost 800 hours. I wasted so much of my life putting together board games and tabletop RPGs for friends to play, only to have them load up, be completely disinterested in what's going on, and start throwing stuff around the table to amuse themselves. The last time I played, I loaded it up to play 40k with someone who insisted I teach them how to play. The model throwing happened. I never touched this game again. It's been easier to get people who are interested in these games in person than it is online.
>Wizardry 8
I hated this game when I first played it. I put together a new party, and I quit not long after reaching the first town. I don't know why I hated it, but I couldn't stand it. A few years later, I thought I'd give it another try. I had a great time, and I played it to completion. The thing here is, I don't even remember why I didn't like it, or what changed. I just loaded it up and dumped a few hundred hours into it.

>bad RNG can fuck your game over to the point where it's unplayable.
That's why I could never stand Darkest Dungeon, where things like hunger rolls were entirely random. Even death is random, because everyone has a percent chance to not die when they take damage when at 1 hitpoint. A dice roll decides what resting options are available. A dice roll decides how much backtracking a dungeon will involve. A dice roll can decide that stress was actually good. The RNG is so thick that it doesn't even feel good when something good happens. The game isn't even hard or challenging like everybody jerks themselves off about. It's like going to a casino and playing a slot machine. The game is practically designed entirely like a gacha game, and would fit right in with the common F2P mobile game.

Seriously, why do indie devs do this retarded fucking shit? Squad did this with KSP too, and every. single. update they have ever pushed out on their idiotic "development cycle" came a broken mess of recycled bollocks that never actually added anything to the game. Period. It's probably the Tommy Wiseau effect of shooting on a greenscreen roof; it makes you feel professional even if you really are just a wankstain of a developer.

It's the modern software design principle of "release early, release often". Rather than the older design principle of "feature based release", where you design, implement, and test a feature, then release the result. Instead you set yourself a time limit, in this case 3 months, do as much work as you can in the time, then release the result regardless of if it's a buggy, broken mess.
If the developer is good, then it will be a cycle of "some features completed, some implemented but buggy, some missing" and they get all their testing from the audience. As they continue, features go from buggy to completed, and unimplemented to buggy, and they can respond to user feedback before things get too entrenched. If the developer is bad, then you get a cycle of "some features buggy, some features missing" and they spend all their time implementing new stuff but never actually fixing the bugs.
It's pretty simple for a developer to fall into this trap because fixing bugs is time consuming and hard, but just layering more buggy, broken, untested shit onto the pile of buggy, broken, untested shit is more interesting.
