Crunch as in crunch time?

Doesn't matter labor is shit anyway, always will be, the team is all that matters, New Vegas was shat out after a few months, it was still decent, Randy Pitchford Forever took 14 years and was shit.

Like the other anons said, it really depends on the team, for example I'm pretty sure Thief The Metal Age was rushed and it's still a fantastic game.

Also the one on the left is mocapped, isn't it? How the fuck does crunch time have anything to do with it?

Crunch is one of the industry's most self-destructive aspects. Big AAA studios absolutely chew through skilled people leading them to either enter different industries or go into indie.

That's the reason since 2007 or so you're suching such a massive rise of indie games, there was a downturn from 2014-2017 or so but that was due to Steam almost intentionally killing them.

That wouldn't be such a terrible idea, because if there's no minimum wage, nobody is working minimum wage. The pay is controlled by the economy, essentially, and the business owners would be forced to pay a livable wage because otherwise nobody would take the job.

Oddly games with crunch always end up as shallow and forgotten about a month after its launch.

Games without crunch tend to be fun and chill and people play them for decades.

Ten years from now people will still be playing games like Kenshi and and AC: New Leaf but no cunt will be playing trash like The Last of Jews 2 or Mortal Kombat 11.

minimum wage didn't help, but the biggest reason for stagnant wages has been the push for more women in the workforce (almost doubling the labor pool in some realms of work), the use/abuse of illegal immigrant labor, work visas like H-1B, and finally outsourcing labor to cheaper countries (which was allowed by the government, despite it being detrimental to American citizens in the long-term.. and we are seeing uglier effects of it now with the pandemic that started in the PRC).

Government interventionalism and corporate propaganda. There would be no need for minimum wage if free enterprise was given the actual freedom to flourish. Minimum wage is a bandaid on a necrotized wound at this point.

Yeah, it might be fine for one or two projects that you are actually invested in, but doing it on every project is a terribe long-term strategy and one of the primary reasons the industry is shit right now. All of the old talent which was cultivated over years quit the industry because they got burnt out. Currently, the average time a game developer works before fucking off to do something less terrible is 7 years. And I think that's averaged across all the departments, chances are it's lower for certain departments like programmers. If there's no opportunity for the devs to grow and become talented, we will always suffer through these games which look like they were made by amateurs because they are.

Crunch is overtime with added production pressure. Couple this with publishers limiting breaks (many will deliver food to studios, but expect to code and chew at your desk), work weeks reaching double the usual 40 hours if not more, along with many publishers finding loopholes to not pay Overtime wages for the added time or dangling bonuses that can be taken away with ease, on top of a lack of job security. And these "crunch times" can last for months.

Imagine spending 6-7 months barely leaving your desk to code as fast as you can living off of shit food and energy drinks for as little of pay possible to work on a game you probably didn't like in the first place and now dread to look at, then upon release get laid off from publisher and given black marks if the metacritic score is juuuust not high enough (like an 84 or so). And this is most of your job life for a couple of years. No wonder turnovers happen in the industry.

Don't forget that despite all the crunch, The Linear Movie of Us 2 was put on hiatus because of the pandemic.

that only works under two conditions:

1: there must be a surplus of jobs to laborers, enabling laborers to leverage their efforts against pay without fear of losing their jobs in favor of cheaper labor

2: corporation owners have to cease treating their bank accounts like the high score on a Pacman machine. You don't need or deserve a $300,000 bonus this year when you can't/refuse to pay your people a decent wage for their efforts. They're the ones putting in the hours and effort while you play golf and sit in meetings determining how you're going to fuck them over to pad your income this quarter

in a world where corporations are treating minimum wage like a suggestion rather than a cutoff, removing it is quite possibly the worst idea you can inflict on the economy

>Then don't work for a shitty AAA studio.

That's not really as easy as you might think. Most smaller studios don't hire very much because they aren't that big. Also, programming games actually requires more skill than writing business software, and hiring programmers in other industries is already ridiculously inconsistent and terrible – good luck convincing a small studio with a tight budget that you're worth their money despite being a fresh college graduate.

>Why would you code for video games specifically anyway? Cause you like playing games?

As someone who has written both games and enterprise software, it's a lot more interesting, and believe it or not, difficult, than writing business software. Much of the typical changes made to business software can be made with little or no applied mathematics, whereas you usually have to come up with fairly complicated math just to get players to move in games, depending on how your movement works. Games from a software perspective are an amalgamation of all of the most fun/interesting things you did in computer science classes. The most interesting things you can do in non-game software are all tangentially related to games as well, such as AI/machine learning, graphics, etc. The majority of business software jobs are making minute changes to behemoth applications that require you to navigate jungles of red tape to even make that change, and then you find out that you have to revert it because the dumb fuck who asked for the change didn't word it correctly at all. This is why most business developers have some kind of blog and do tons of shit in their free time, because their jobs are fucking boring. I would still be a game developer if it wasn't an objectively terrible career choice because of the pay, benefits, and work environment.

How does aegro know that there is no crunch for animal crossing? Is it because it was delayed because cyberpunk & TLOU2 admit there is crunch and that was delayed.

No crunch would be good. It would delay a 1 year release game to a 2 year release game and a 2 year release game to a 3 year release game and so on. Too bad they were the ones who put themselves into that corner where it's a part of the industry. They've also got stock holders to worry about so they are already put into a position where they have to deliver on a quarterly basis every year. They also handed their labor to China for easy money and made them more replaceable. They think unionization will help when all the choices that have fostered crunch were made by them.

Believe it or not, but a lot of the people who actually built and run those companies also hate those idiots because they are a huge drain on money and will be the first ones to go the moment they're not needed (Which is happening given how reliant and required the modern world is on communication to where you do not need separate division just for managing the different locations when you can have a literal "face to face" transition with instantaneously communication where both people talking can be across cities, states, countries, and continents).

>How does aegro know that there is no crunch for animal crossing?

He doesn't because, if he knew a single thing about Japanese game development (Or Japanese work life in general), he'd know that crunch is a way of life in Japan for an overwhelming majority of those living in cities. It's considered in extremely bad form to be the last to arrive and the first to leave, with some people even sleeping at their desks just to not make it look like they're slacking off (Especially so when the boss stays in late). That's also on top of the fact that "out of office" outings are treated almost like official business meeting.

crunch is a AAA thing anyway far as i can tell, and I haven't even played any of that garbage since 2018, much less bought any.

though that new xcom game with ayy recruits is mighty tempting at 10bux, if that counts as AAA with crunch

With New Horizons, they COULD have gotten it out before Christmas if they wanted, but they instead decided to go at a slower pace for a few more months (but not post the fiscal year) for the wellbeing of the staff and the product. There is a difference in working like 14 hr days on something you're passionate about than the same amount of time on a project you just HAVE to do. Imagine crunch time on some shitty Paw Patrol game. Would you go above and beyond and add little touches to the polish, or just do the minimal amount of effort?

Also pretty sure TLoU2 has like untold amount of staff and studios having to work together and strain the project compared to Animal Crossing.

That won't work because most people are brainless sheep with zero agency. Those kinds of lemmings can't be counted on to demand a reasonable wage because then the employers can just find some meximonkey for whom the dollar goes way farther back home and can support a family of eight on seven dollars an hour. You might have principles, but it'd be because you're white or raised alongside whites, the filithy stupid immigrant stereotype exists for a reason and they undermine the average worker's ability to negotiate for a higher wage. Capitalist Pig bossman has an incentive to pay you as little as possible to enlarge that profit margin. That said, people who are expecting to get a livable wage at the minimum line are braindead and probably the whole reason why the whole wage negotiation situation is so shit; because instead of standing up for themselves they want big gov to do it for them.
