This is the big problem. I don't understand the huge appeal of TFT2 either, but it grew organically and the community was let loose to mod and make maps, private servers etc, to their heart's content.

It's similar to Overwatch, but I guess it's not quite the same, but the whole point is that the games are made to make players feel like they are skilled without requiring any real investment, you can just compare player progression between any character in Overwatch to TF2, and at best with Overwatch it's learning when to spam your powers to push your teams advantage, with TF2 you first need to be able to even understand what your character is capable of, you don't just go into the Soldier knowing how to rocket jump but with a lot of practice and hard work you will eventually see how levels are actually designed with rocket jumping in mind, and that's just one thing, weapons are balanced for skill too, you will need to learn how to aim your rockets predictively, and that a direct hit deals a decent amount more damage, how to offset your oponents by capitalizing on their jumps to send them flying, then hitting them with a rocket for a kill, or pull out your shotgun for more reliable projectiles, and that's just one class, the nuance of TF2 is taken into Overwatch and then completely discarded, and I'm guessing that's what Valorant does with Counterstrike, which isn't really a game I've gotten that much into, but I can respect a lot of it's design decisions.

Devs migrated to that project because UT wasn't gaining any traction, not the other way around. Arena shooters aren't as popular as they used to be, especially with the newer crowd.

You don't build anything, you don't harvest anything, you don't produce any units and you control a single character at any time with a few notable exceptions.

I get that Dota was a custom map for Warcraft 3 and it inherited the mechanic of "kill creeps to harvest gold" from there was well, but that's a niche mechanic that most RTS don't even feature and even W3 was an anomaly in itself with a bigger focus on the heroes themselves being complemented with a small platoon instead of the large armies of units in other titles.

MOBAs are close to hack&slash games than RTS to the point you could consider them a form of PvP speedrun of Diablo for instance, down to farming for XP and gold, getting items to make you stronger, focus on your character and it's strengths, gameplay coming mostly from your skills and how you use them, etc.

You'd be more correct to point out that you don't get Warcraft 4 because of Dota since that'd be the only RTS that comes closer to it but everything else is entirely different. Just for a very stark contrast, compare Supreme Commander and the role of your ACU with any MOBA and the role of your hero.

Same thing that happened to arena shooters happened to RTS as well. It's a stagnant genre with almost no reason to play anything but the classics, no innovation and no market.

And specifically in the case of RTS games, I'd say they brought this onto themselves since they kinda sucker the player into thinking he's playing an entire different genre of game with slow methodical strategic decisions instead of the fast paced, small army rush they tend to be.

This is why strategy games, especially 4X, are still going strong while RTS games fell behind.

Not because MOBAs, an entirely different genre, drained their userbase but because they did not innovate and evolve.

Xonotic, Reflex, Warsow, Red Eclipse and plenty of others. If neither of these are "decent arena shooters" then it's impossible to make a "decent arena shooter".

Grey Goo, Iron Harvest, Zero-K are also good examples of modern RTS games and if those don't count, you can't have "decent RTS games" ever made.

Neither of those seem to gather much interest and yet the Endless series seems to have sold like cupcakes, as did Age of Wonder 3 to the point they made Planetfall. So there's interest in strategy games, just not RTS. Why would that be? Maybe the market wants something that RTS games can't give?

They flocked to Overwatch when it was new and dropped it when it got stale and they had newer, shinier different things to play with. However the niche devs that make the good shit and need support, those you can actually influence because the playerbase is small enough you can actually make a difference. It's a lot less bullshit in an RTS because there is much less margin for error, especially when you are 1v1'ing, whereas 1v1 doesn't even really exist in Overwatch (maybe it does, I haven't played it at all since recently after it came out, but even if it did I 100% guarantee you that only a small number of the heroes are viable). If an Eldar player miscalculates and sends their Fire Dragons in at the wrong time, or the other player fooled the Eldar player into thinking they didn't know about their cloaked Webway Gate when in reality they had an army camping outside it, that is an instant loss if the game is late enough. Whereas the heroes in Overwatch are configured, deliberately, in a rock-paper-scissors type fashion.

That's a very dubious argument to make this many years down the road. The developers were modders, sure, but they also knew what they were doing. Half-Life already had random spray patterns with the Glock and MP5, but they didn't use those. A much easier way to simulate more realistic recoil without needing to tediously design a pattern for every single gun would be to simply weight the algorithm to direct your crosshair in a specific direction, since vanilla HL MP5 spray is literally just a cone. Instead of that, just move your camera in a random direction weighted towards upwards with some left or right thrown in there. Instead they actually designed the patterns for the guns deliberately. It was a clear design decision from the outset because otherwise they would not have went through that effort.

After it was shown that even with this very invasive anti-cheat protection, there was still cheating happening even in a small pool of players, you would think they'd just scrap it since it doesn't work and only hurts the consumer in the end. Watching some streams of it, I'm not really seeing the appeal of it. As a hero shooter it has terrible visual design from characters to abilities that the only thing worse in this department was Battleborn. Riot has gotten so bad that they've become a chinese ripoff.

Debatable, it can be very satisfying to land 10 hits in a row because you managed to get the muscle memory down. Also, most games with good shooting mechanics do not use "random spread in a cone" as you describe, which makes me believe you have no idea what you are talking about. Even Call of Duty does not do this even in those games, the bullets always go where the ironsights point and the recoil is "realistic" in the sense that it tends to go upwards and slightly in one lateral direction, depending on the gun. The problem you complain about shooting an MP5 and having the bullet go to the left because of the pattern, for example – still exists with a random cone, except now you never know where the bullet will land.

Similar to how I learned to one-shot faggots with a Karabiner from the hip in Red Orchestra.
