The explosion as such isnt a big deal, but artillery fire in DoW its pretty pleasing because it leaves craters that deform the terrain and throw your soldiers around or pulverizes them.

I have fond memories playing this game online, it is pretty unique for a strategy game - 8 players at either side, you choose infantry, armored units, air or support. Max. 2 roles per team, so you can specialize a little (support can be artillery or repair units).

If we're talking about nice-looking explosions. Wind waker has always had nice explosions and smoke effects, the style works too well. The HD version also adds some post processing to give their "boom"s more impact.

Great fun, especially when your team funnels all the strategy points to one player so they can just non-stop nuke the enemy spawns. Another notable thing is your helicopters can be shot down by artillery if they're unlucky.

I was about to mention New Vegas: I've found its explosions satisfying but only with many points put into Explosions or Energy weapons and with fun associated perks. Otherwise, dynamite, grenades, etc. feel like damp firecrackers.
Meltdown for instance is alright.
