Anyone have any tips or guides for designing a good looking Island? After getting the terraforming tools I’ve been using the planner and everything I come up with doesn’t look terribly good. At this point I’m thinking of just finding and rpg town layout and jacking it for my own.

This game has the same problem as the other Animal Crossing games. There's no real end-game and the "end-game" that already exists is way too easy to reach. I got KKK Slider to come to my village and now….yeah, I'm stumped. Boring game after that. Doesn't have the benefit of Rune Factory or even Harvest Moon of having a lot you can do. Don't get me wrong, Animal Crossing has a lot of content, but not a lot that you can do. Allow me to explain. It may have 5000 hats or 5000 pieces or 5000 different fish you can catch, but if collecting all clothing or all fish is everything you can do, then the game is actually pretty shallow - just wide, which is where people might get the idea that the game is a good time sink.
When's the next Rune Factory coming out? Talking about it has made me wish I could play Rune Factory 3 all over again (the best RF if you ask me).

I don’t even think you need to have a hacked switch to use fake cards which makes the people spending. 100+ on a card even more absurd. Also, the funny thing about people doing that is they are cutting out the whole “nook ticket” mechanic which will significantly cut down on the time you could be playing the game. You don't have the luxury of choice, considering fish don't spawn half the time. Oceans are borderline empty for no good reason and the rivers are annoying to navigate in my place. There's two spots where the river's too wide to jump over, meaning it's too wide to reach with a fishing rod from the other side and the fish will ALWAYS be on the other side or swim to it if they're on the right side.
Doesn't help that half of my attempts, the rivers were outright empty too. I'd spend a minute walking across the entire river and not see a single fish several times.

It's partly island navigation. I had Sterling and Mitzi stand in the fucking way right next to some fossils I had placed, blocking the river section right by my house. Wasted time several times until I moved all that shit. And I mentioned the river wideness. Several river sections I modified also seemed to be too thin for fish to spawn as well, so that probably fucked me in the long run too.

Doubt it. It appears that they intentionally allow you a single "sister fruit" which in your case is cherries, and likely want you to focus on player interaction to gain other items.
Everyone's islands are all similarly limited on fruit, flowers, and even the decorations/furniture/recipes they can buy. Or at least the colors on some decorations.
For example: Through the NookStop I can buy a cotton-candy stall. Other players won't have this, and instead might have popcorn machines.
At the same time, my construction sign is blue with a picture of a man digging. Someone else will have an orange one with a picture of a saw and hammer.
There are many, many items with exclusive colors or textures that cannot be customized and must be traded for. It is absurd.

It's not exactly clear to me. I only got hyacinths in my shop after getting some seeds, for example, but it could have very well been random. I also haven't seen white tulips in my shop, and haven't seen tulips at all for a while now. I think your town sells what's on the upper half of the island and whatever is on some Nook Mile islands (mums and windflowers in my case) and something else randomly, likely weekly as I haven't been keeping good track. I don't have the game open right now to make sure of that though.

If your custom design has at least one pixel of transparency in it and you display it on the ground (either through the custom design menu or island constructor) onto an existing default path, it will replace that path's texture and fit the shape, meaning you can have nice custom paths with rounded corners and grassy edges. Is the money tree pattern based on the order you planted the trees rather than the day of the week that you planted the trees? I time traveled back and forth a bit so I dunno what the fuck is going to happen with the trees. It's useful having multiple money trees blooming on the same day, but if the pattern is entirely based on the day of the week I'm probably not going to be able to discern it at this point from jumping around too much between Thursday and Friday

Ankha has been a model neighbor. Or perhaps the real problem is that parents are too stupid to use it as a teaching conversation moment (namely that sometimes a person won't like you no matter how you treat them). Besides, as someone somewhere said, it's normal and healthy for young kids to have minor emotional traumas of the disappointment/argument/being-called-names type. People have to learn how to handle that sort of thing in a healthy way and childhood is when you learn that kind of thing. From what I can tell, your first 5 villagers (maybe even the 6th?) are set to be specific personality types.
You begin with a Jock and a Sisterly, then you get a Lazy, Peppy, and Normal. The first camper may or may not be restricted to Smug.
After that, I believe you are unbound. However, I have seen it implied that some villagers are more common or more rare, but I don't have any data to back that up, or even anecdotal information on which characters are supposedly rarer. Might just be a side effect of the starting villager restrictions making certain ones appear more common. Since everyone has to have a Lazy as their 3rd, the takoyaki Lazy Octopus seems more common as a result of pickier players with meme taste.
Additionally, if you have an open housing plot and you don't personally invite anyone to fill it, the game will choose a villager to randomly move in at the start of the next day, so be quick about it. Days seem to start/end at 5AM now rather than midnight, as well.
I think the game might try to line up villagers of a specific gender when hunting. It might decide you should have a male, and you'll find 3 males in a row. Might just be a coincidence, since I rarely hunt past 3, but when I go hunting I only find one gender until I find a keeper.
So if you're prepping to find your personal favorite snooty bitch, you should wait until after you have 6+ villagers and your town is (mostly) complete, and you'll want plenty of free time to do the hunting, lest the game fuck you over for a week until someone else moves out.
When you do wind up grinding out mystery islands to find one or two specific villagers, you should keep a file listing everyone you meet in order. It might be interesting, and I would like to read it.

Given somebody datamined both the name for the art gallery and a gyroid section of the museum at the same time, I have a feeling it will be coming eventually. This game probably would have taken until this fall if they actually wanted to finish it for real, but as long as they're not charging for it I guess the only problem I have with it is preservation. Given the Welcome amiibo version of NL was given a physical release, I feel like later printings will avoid this problem for the most part.

All reports I've seen have balloons float in from the West for 6am-6pm, and from the East for 6pm-6am.
Balloons have a chance to spawn at XX:X4 and XX:X9 on the clock, and take about a minute to reach your island, with some variance in speed. Bunny Day Balloons are on a separate timer and don't prevent normal Balloons from spawning. Don't worry about those.
After you have dealt with a Balloon (or didn't find one), enter Nook's Cranny. Select an item on the table to interact with it and open the dialogue box. You don't have to buy the item. Make sure to leave the shop before XX:X(4/9) on the clock, so the next Balloon has an opportunity to spawn.
This abuses a feature that was intended to give everyone a fair shake, by making it so they don't leave a building only to see a Balloon just as it floats out of reach, or so they don't constantly miss out on spawns from spending too much time indoors combined with unlucky rolls. It increases the likelihood a Balloon will spawn, but does not guarantee it. It also does not guarantee desirable results, so I hope you like Clay.
Roughly, your timing will look like
>XX:X4, balloon spawned
>XX:X5, balloon shot down
>XX:X6, entered shop to dick around
>XX:X8, left shop
>XX:X9, new balloon spawned
>XX:X0, new balloon shot down
>et cetera
This worked on 1.1.4, they might have patched it out in 1.2.0, but I doubt it.

I had my 10th house plot open for like a week before I bothered to go looking for someone yesterday. Unless you mean for the first x number of villagers. I was prepared to go to mystery islands a number of times but only ended up needing two trips. First was some pink alligator chick. Second was Knox; I love this medieval knight larp chicken.
Also nobody shows up at the damn campsite ever. That only happened once, it has to be bugged. I know it's for amiibo, but I was under the impression you could randomly get villagers visiting.

The game filled my 9th plot automatically. Could have been coincidence they filled it ASAP, haven't had much opportunity to test it myself.
The 10th plot is special in some small way, so they won't autofill that one. Originally I thought you could only fill it with Amiibo, but I was wrong. Thankfully.
I think the devs tried to leave you a "free space" to fill as you see fit, after strangling your options for the first 6. You also need 9 villagers to reach a 5-star island, so it's up to you to obtain/keep a 10th as a buffer in case anyone moves out. As if anyone cares about rating. What're they going to do, deport me?
I'm not sure about the campsite either. Aside from the first visitor you get that teaches you how it works, I haven't had anybody show up in the 2 weeks I've had it open. I would have expected a visitor at least once a week, maybe on the weekends, but it's weirdly empty.
Then again, I haven't had any available plots staying open by the next day. Maybe I should build a 10th plot and see what happens, although I wouldn't have expected that to be a requirement. You didn't need an empty plot when the tutor visitor arrived, and were able to rush out a plot within minutes to keep them.

Make a bunch of potted ivy and customize it to yellow/red for the west/east sides respectively. That seems to give alot. You can also customize wood tables to be green or red (cherry).
I'm pretty sure it affects your point total for HHA. In general its difficult to determine what all the effects are.
