>What is Secret of the Solstice?
It's an MMO that can most easily be described as a Ragnarok Online clone. 2D sprites on 3D levels, similar art style, similar mechanics, the whole deal. The official servers for the game only ran from 2008 to 2011.
>How does this compare to RO?
As far as I've gotten, it's also grindy and not a theme park. The world is smaller, the world map looks stupid, and there isn't much lore, but it plays smoother, which is nice.
>What is XenRebirth?
It's the only private that exists for this game, and it became open to the public just yesterday.
>Why play this?
We've had many successful Ragnarok Online threads here, but interest in them is smaller each time. If you like that kind of game, but you're tired of the same old thing, this is something just like it, but "new." And because the server just launched, now is probably the right time to play it.
>Links
https://www.xenrebirth.com/ - get the game here.
https://xen-rebirth.fandom.com/ - very incomplete wiki.
https://xenonline.fandom.com/ - very incomplete wiki for the official server. The information here doesn't always match this version, but it's still useful.
If you decide to play, post your IGN here, and we can play together. If you're too shy for that, you can try whispering Cleo instead.
By the way, you lose 7% EXP on death.

>The classes
Everyone starts as a Xenian. At level 16, you can choose one out of six class paths. At levels 66, 96, and 131, you can move on to the next class in that path.
Squire > Knight > Warrior > Warlord - the tank
Apprentice > Mage > Wizard > ArcMage - magic dps
Neophyte > Rogue > Assassin > Shadow Master - traps, invisibility, and quick melee
Scout > Archer > Ranger > Archer Lord - ranged dps
Acolyte > Cleric > Priest > Paladin - heals and buffs
Disciple > Templar > Holy Avenger > Saint Guardian - jack of all trades class that can kinda solo
The endgame sprites aren't as cute as the earlier ones, but there is a variety of equipable costumes in the game.
>Stats
POW - attack, weight capacity
INT - magic, skill critical
AGI - attack, hit rate, critical, skill critical
MEN - skill attack rate, caps at 32
WIS - MP
STA - HP
The exact formulas for how the stats affect stuff is nowhere to be found.
>Builds
There are no skill builds. You obtain new skills from skill books. Some books you get for free, other must be purchased from NPCs, and others must be farmed from monsters, or bought from another player. You can have all the skills for your class, provided you manage to get all the books. As for stat builds, there is no detailed guide. I recommend taking a look at the forum for some general advice, but minmaxers may be out of luck.

>not much lore
So there's no story like RO? Is moving around the maps a pain? How is the QoL? Which is worse: item or exp grind?
I've learned that the best parts of multi-player grindfest games for me are a good guild (community) and story (immersion). Good gameplay is always a bonus.

>So there's no story like RO? Is moving around the maps a pain? How is the QoL? Which is worse: item or exp grind?
I'm still very early in the game, so my knowledge is a very limited. I'm sure there will be a story at some point, but so far there is nothing.
Traversing maps is no problem at all. The movement feels pretty quick and smooth compared to RO, so walking is no biggie. Of course, if you walk into a map with high level monsters, they'll rape your ass. There's an item that lets you mark a location for teleports, and another that teleports you to the marked location, plus a third that sends you to town, so you can move back and forth from the grind like it's nothing. All of those are sold in town for cheap. And for traveling between towns there's a teleporter NPC.
QoLwise, it's pretty basic. I don't think battle mode is a thing, and I don't know how to invite people into my party remotely. Other than that, I have no complaints.
Early game exp grind quick like you'd expect from an early game. Item grind hasn't been necessary yet. From what I've seen the book grind is made less bad by trading. I already have a few books for other classes stocked up that I got from killing random stuff. I don't know what the rates are like endgame.
>I've learned that the best parts of multi-player grindfest games for me are a good guild (community) and story (immersion). Good gameplay is always a bonus.
The good news is that this is the kind of game where you need a party after the very early stages, or so I'm told. So the potential is there, assuming people join.

It's that time of year again where I crawl back to MMOs so I guess I'll give this a try. I'll pick the "templar" class because I hate picking classes and doing a little bit of everything sounds nice. Give me a week or two to finish my finals and agonize over picking a screen name

But agonizing over screen names is THE classic video game autist's dilemma, usually solved by arbitrarily picking one to use in every fantasy game and one to use in every realistic game, and then never changing from those names when it is at all possible. You can't just circumvent the process like that.

I finished the tutorial quests. They do a really bad job of teaching you how the game works since it's mostly just walk from point A to point B. The game screen can't be resized, the mini-map only has two sizes. How easy are stat resets since I probably already screwed up. I think I will be a priest this time around.

When and where in the Japanese mythology did an Oni (translators note: Oni means Demon) dress up like a modern day doctor with a stethoscope?

Plenty of Spanish speakers in this server. The game trolled me by giving me a quest that makes you walk slowly around a big town. I guess there is lore if you take the time to stop and look around the towns. If anyone else is going to join, don't make another healer. We don't have a guild yet.

Part of the appeal is the near empty wiki. There's a lot of mystery in this game. Enemies generally have more health than you and will KO you if you don't pay attention. Monsters are ugly and uncanny valley. If there's one thing this game did right, is the necessity of forming parties to progress through content. No auto-matchmaking. Just meeting players and grinding or working together the old-fashioned way.

Just don't use cheating software. I don't think even mods exist for this game. It's a dated RO clone who's original company closed down because it allegedly took credit card information from players. So far it's just me and OP playing. If anons don't join up, then I'll just play something else. Native players are what you'd expect, they're helpful to party with though. Bear in mind, this a Korean-tier grindfest so know what you're signing up for.

What if something triggers their anti-cheat and datamines your whole PC? I'm not a fan of datamining.
I'm considering running it in a VM, at least that would aleviate that possibility

My understanding is that this is just the usual scanning for known cheating tools you might be running while the game is open. There's nothing in there that implies they'll be looking at your files. Pretty standard stuff, if you've played other mmo private servers.

You can share your IGN anytime so we can help you with leveling. We're relatively new ourselves. If you want to attempt some of the autistic quests, like the 72-hour Pet one, you can make a farming character next to your main. Those materials are popular goods in the player market. The death penalty makes soloing not recommended.

Speaking of helping with leveling, it turns out that it's possible to share exp equally between everyone in the party, no matter how big the difference in levels, at least as far as we can tell. The powerleveling gets pretty crazy.

Powerlevelling aside, xp sharing regardless of level definitely helps new people ease in, doesn't cause things like level 30s having to grind on their own because other people are level 50+

Been playing this for close to a week now, I figured I'd give my 2c for anyone on the fence:
The game is half social hub, half korean grinder. Given the server's population size, towns are bustling with activity and while there aren't enough players to crowd every leveling map, in the most popular ones you'll get roped into a party without even looking for one. The community is a time capsule to the early 2000s with emoticons flying around like bullets in a war zone. There's also little mechanics here and there to encourage interactivity, e.g skill books which are random drops from mobs in level ranges. You'll often send/receive "need X?".
Gameplay wise it's more of a mixed bag, a more straightforward Ragnarok Online, without the quirks like mobs giving you the Mario Kart 64 rubberband when you get hit. It also unfortunately omitted most of the depth, but that's somewhat smoothed out by the game having its own spin on things. I haven't tried the game's PVP, so most of the interest might be there. If you're giving this a try, whisper someone (have to enable that under options -> social) for some spare kron to buy XP bonus tomes. The beginner (Xenian) phase is utterly mundane and lasts a few hours without it.
If you're allergic to korean grindathons or looking for something ultra competitive, give this a wide berth.

My guild's not going to be happy but I'm going to quit the game shortly after reaching Priest, even though I'm a key role in their party comp. I wanted to play this game with anons but that didn't end up happening. The few from this thread that I played with preferred to grind alone or natives than spend time with each other.
I wouldn't have picked this game up if OP didn't make the thread. I'm more confused why they even made the thread in the first place if he was content with soloing.
Before I leave, I will give away my bank items, including a dozen Xen crystals, to any anon here who wants them. The two I played with gets first dibs of course, followed by newer ones starting out before my guild claims the rest.
It's kind of a shame really. The guild I'm a part of is quite decent and friendly to me. But I would rather play something better, not a high bar since this is a freaking MMO, or do a productive activity if you guys aren't in it. Though it's not surprising that the anons who stuck to this genre are really, really into the grind itself. Camaraderie be damned.
