2020 seems to be a big year for JRPGs so lets have a thread on them. The obvious big names coming up are:
>FF7 Remake
>Trials of Mana
Then you have the games that SUPPOSEDLY have a release window for 2020, but we've had very little information on them
>Genshin Impact
>Tales of Arise
>Granblue Fantasy Re:Link
Don't forget you're stuck playing JRPGs forever.

depends; every FF is different in tone, content, and quality
4 and 6 are solid entry points (4 for the closest to traditional fantasy, 6 for steampunk and magitech), 7 is babby's first, 9 is either the best or terrible depending on taste but either way it's one of the longest, 10 is also a good entry point but comes off as weird compared to the rest of the series

Dragon's Crown is a belt-scrolling brawler with level ups. It's basically the modern successor to Golden Axe and the Capcom D&D Mystara games
Demon's Souls is more of a WRPG in presentation and tone, and a successor to classic dungeon hack series King's Field
both have RPG elements (DS moreso), neither are properly JRPGs

Unironically, you might be the target demographic for the FFVII remake.
Combat is completely redesigned, being closer to an action RPG then old FF.
Problem is, without getting into a debate about story or characters compared to other entries, SE are being absolutely ridiculous, where only a fraction of a fraction of the game is being released.

They outright stated recently that nuFFVII absolutely had to be episodic to meet current visual parameters if they didn't want to cut shit while adding content. Which I assume means they're wanting to avoid any sort of reasonable asset compression and optimization (hell, I kind of wonder if there will even be a scaled overworld in the parts past midgar, or if those are apt to be 1:1 size as well between the screen character and environment, and the lack of freedom that comes with that) to squeeze as much money from prospective new fans and absolute drones as they can.
As if needing two blu-rays worth of space, plus what I assume to be required install to HDD, just isn't satisfactory on it's own. Still think if they were going to remake the game, it should have been for the PS2.

>FF 7 & 8 feel dated
<9 doesn't
Nigger 9 has got to be the most forgettable, with the most unoriginal combat system of practically the entire series. 7 and 8 still feel fresh in comparison since their settings and battle systems were original and ambitious, 9 was just a stale throwback. And don't give me that muh grafix are what feel dated, 8's realistic style is easily prettier and anything on the ps1 looks dated by modern standards anyway. Honestly, XIII >> 9, the setting was interesting and combat very satisfying at times

It's worth noting that Persona 1 has two versions: the original and the psp remake. The remake adds QoL changes and gives a much better translation than the PS1 western release got (which also changed a lot of the cast to make the more "american", such as making Mark a nig nog.) It also adds in the snow queen route which was absent in that version. However, it replaces the original soundtrack with a newer one that's more similar to Persona 3 and 4, which completely kills the atmosphere. It also has about half as many tracks as the original, with many of them repeating in areas that used to have different songs playing. Pick your poison, I guess.
Luckly, Atlus learned their mistake when they made the Persona 2 remake, giving a more faithful remake of the soundtrack and adding the option to switch between the two.

The main thing with Jrpgs is that you have to follow a story/plot that you tolerate and a specific game mechanic that you enjoy (Collecting Pokemon is one for example). If you do not have these two things, or atleast one, it's not worth your time, because in all, JRPGs play very similarily. For example, while Persona, Mario TTYD, and The Stick of Truth are all JRPGs, you may only find one of these games interesting or enjoyable.

>but what are the differences in the gameplay
That's a complex question.
In terms of battle systems alone SMT 1 and 2 combat differed from Persona 1 and 2 in that SMT had a front row and back row system, whereas Persona 1 and 2 had grid systems. A more important difference however, was that in SMT you play as a squishy human who has to essentially be guarded by demons, in Persona you are typically no less squishy then your party members.
Both series however, have merged to a certain extent with a homogenized single line combat system. They tried to keep things separate during the early PS2 era with Persona 3 having AI allies and SMT3 not, however, the AI allies were fucking retarded and they have since removed it in later releases.
What currently keeps the combat different is the fact that in SMT you can make your part out of yourself and 3 of any demon in the game, but in Persona the player has to choose 3 of a limited pool of allies that have a set number of skills while the MC alone can choose from any demon persona to use in battle.
That said the real difference is

I really didn't like the first Bravely Default. Aside from the titular battle mechanic, which isn't even all that big of a deal, it's a poor man's FF5 that turns into Groundhog's Day in the second half because the developers needed to pad out the game's length. Are Bravely Second and Bravely Default II any better? What about Octopath Travelers? From what I understand that's made by the same people.

What JRPGs have you even played? Some of the things you said don't make sense. For one, JRPG is just Japanese RPG. More like a combination of all types of RPGs but made under Japan or at least with some sort of JP style/twist to it. This includes things like Action RPGs (Star Ocean/Tales series, Seiken Densetsu series, Dragon's Dogma), Dungeon RPGs/Dungeon Crawlers (Etrian Odyssey, modern Wizardry, Demon Gaze, some MT/SMT games), and your average RPG like Dragon Quest. This is why barely any games in this thread have the same type of gameplay. Even Final Fantasy, which is one of the most iconic JRPG IPs, doesn't have the same type of gameplay. It's why FF fans can never agree on what's the best game since FF barely even has a consistent identity besides a few things like Chocobos, summons, and giant crystals.
>The leveling system is always extremely basic.
Heavily depends on the game. Some games have it to where the leveling system is just a way to make yourself slightly stronger while there are many more mechanics that flesh out how you actually progress your character. A great example is Tales of Graces F. Maxing out gear you makes gives you stat buffs from them and "Titles" determine what skills you get. You can make a tank, DPS, or glass cannon with these. Meanwhile Titles give you certain passives, abilities, and different ways to chain attacks. In NG+ you won't care about levels and only about what Titles and gear you equip.
>You have no freedom to be good, evil, or somewhere in the middle. No choices that change the story.
There's a whole series dedicated to this called Shin Megami Tensai, though Law/Chaos doesn't mean good/evil. I agree more JRPGs in general could use more choices. Meaningless choices are something that should be purged though.
>It's always the same good vs evil story with religious imagery shoved in so writers and players feel intellectually intellectual.
That's so broad that applies to most vidya that revolves around constant action. Anything that wants to stroke off people's intellectual ego will reference religion, politics, morality or philosophy.

Meaningless choices are fine so long as the choices don't appear to be important. There is no reason to not give the player a chance to roleplay while still not having a large impact on the story.
What does need to be purged are choices that seem like they should be meaningful but don't mean anything.

>the idea of choosing which MS to build disappears by mid-game because the game showers you with so many free suits that out-do anything you can build (for example, a couple cut scenes after you can build Hizack and GM II you're given a Gundam II)
>world map is huge, but empty of anything but random encounters
>you need large energy cores to build an MS, but there's a limited number in the game and not enough to build everything unless you know exactly which suits to build and which you'll get for free, which ruins the ability to mix and match parts

> I don't know why nips obsess over highschool so much. Maybe it's because they love to remember the days before they worked suicidal hours wageslaving.
That's a big part of it. High school is culturally ubiquitous in part because it's something everyone goes through, so it doesn't call to more specific experiences like setting something in college or working in an industry. For the target demographic of shonen manga/anime, it's something to look forward to (or so they're sold) and a setting that allows things to be "grown up" but without dealing with mundane adult concerns like toiling away for their employers or trying to pay bills. For older audiences, it is probably genuinely nostalgic because life does nothing but get worse from there. For girls, it's a setting that facilitates youthful (cute), exciting, and relatable romance and human drama. It's an easy setting because a lot doesn't need to be communicated to the audience, it's got a little something for almost any specific audience, and like >>16893354
said, it's marketable.

It’s because Bravely Second took place in the same world and was just a continuation of Bravely Default 1. Bravely Default 2 is going to be in a brand new world with new characters and story, hence calling in Bravely Default 2 instead of something like Bravely Third. It is indeed convoluted at first but makes sense when you understand the reasoning. Also, if anyone has any interest in the series, make sure to play the demo and do the poll their going to release a bit later to tell them how good/bad the game is. I wish more games did this and I think it worked wonderfully for Nioh 2.

>How is SMT different from Persona by the way? I know Persona is an offshoot of SMT, but what are the differences in the gameplay?
When it comes to old-school Persona, the main gameplay difference from SMT is the party design.
Summoners and demons have separate party roles in mainline SMT, whereas in Persona the summoner directly evokes the summon from their own body, so each party member has the combined utility of both.
Persona started as a spinoff of SMT mostly in terms of theme, story and tone. There wasn't a huge amount of gameplay distinction until Hashino took over.

It's funny that people focused so much on some rather insignificant details of the game, like tifa's breasts and whether or not cloud would crossdress, when honestly there are more graphic genuine depictions of violence in the game, which are key to the story.

Zestiria is a shitshow in both game design AND development. IIRC, Rose replaced Alisha as the heroine because the director wanted to fuck Rose's seiyuu. Even with Alisha, though, the game wouldn't be any better.
As for the game itself, it tries to be more Graces-esque than Xillia while still using the TP system instead of CC, and feels worse than both. It would've been mediocre if it weren't for
FUCKING ARMATIZATION
As much as armatization is cool on paper, it's awful if you have three friends who play with you, because the game is designed around basically having two people play most of the time. Or maybe I'm just a shitter who relies on it, who knows. Point is, you're getting crippled HARD from a party of four merging into a party of two. It would be sick to see the concept worked into a better game, though. Tales of Xillia 2 had armatization be better and worse, where it's much less of a constant core mechanic and more of a "fuck shit up" button, but only Ludger is usable when it's activated. Even if it would make game balance a nightmare, I'd love to see it return regardless, but as something everyone in the party can do without restricting the party. Make it more Kamen Rider and less Dragon Ball Z, if that makes sense.
I will say, however, that despite all the fujos literally fagging up Mikleo and Sorey's bond, Mikleo is the best right-hand man in the franchise. Yes, more than Guy in Abyss, though I'll admit I'm biased to the fact that Water is the best element. Also, Edna is pretty nice aside from being voiced by Runkachunk, and Laliah has bigger jugs than you'd think. Dezel and Zaveid didn't grow on me, no, Zaveid's role being expanded in Berseria doesn't affect Zestiria in a vacuum, i.e. the first time you play, though I do admit it made me like him more, Alisha deserved better, Rose is lame, and Sorey is shitty Lloyd with Raine's fetish for ruins.
On an aside; if they wanted to make Sorey be somewhat less idiotic Lloyd, they should've went all in with at least three swords for 300% power, something among the lines of Date Masamune in Sengoku Basara, which actually got crossover costume DLC in 4 Sumeragi, and I only am going on this final tirade to post it.
Zestiria 2 never ever, Velvet is never getting out.

Seeing the cast already fighting Sephiroth and flying around like endgame demi-gods makes me think there will not be a full sequel. My guess is the sequels will be DLC and truncate a ton of the content between Midgar and the final Sephiroth fight. That, and/or a theatrical movie, because that idea is stupid enough to have a chance of happening.
Either way, I do not think the sequels will be full 40+ hour games, because of how early Square is blowing the plot load. Though I suppose it could be done if Square would rewrite basically everything to merge the side games and main game into one canon.

According to YouTube comments, Twitch is now banning accounts streaming early release copies of FF7R because they contain, get this, spoilers. Spoilers! For a game over two decades old! And spoilers for a 20+ year old game every "gamer" allegedly knows about, but don't, because they're whining about spoilers for a 20+ year old game every gamer supposedly knows about.
The FF7R release generates salt without being publicly available. I hope this means the release will be a bigger mess.

It's publicly available in Ozland. Twitch was banning them probably from DMCA related stuff by Square, based on the ban SE put on until April the 10th, which was temporarily removed then reinstated.
From what I've heard and seen, there's a lot more expansion on the story, for better or worse. Sephiroth shows up incredibly fucking early and I think the game ends with a battle against him, because of course.

Didn't Nomura or one of them come out and say that some plot or other things would be different in the Remake? That gives them carte blanche to claim that the Remake isn't the original game and therefore it's not a 20 year old game that's being spoiled. Of course Twitch is subservient to the wishes of a huge publisher like Square. They're probably not even waiting for DMCA requests.

>How is SMT different from Persona by the way?
The main SMT games are good, but not great, dungeon crawlers with a gimmick where you can recruit certain enemies and fuse them together to make other monsters. The first one is the best one. The first two Persona games are fairly standard JRPGs while Persona 3, 4 and 5 incorporate dating sim elements into the mix, a little bit like Thousand Arms. Both series' main draw is that they have darker and edgier(I don't necessarily mean that in a derogatory way) themes than other JRPGs. The combat in all of them is more complex than most JRPGs to varying degrees but they all basically become games of pattern memorization once you figure out what you're doing.
Most of /v/ will tell you that Persona is shit but that's just because it became more popular than the mainline SMT games, to the point of becoming popular with normalfags. If that had never happened the /v/ hive mind would regard them as 6 or 7/10 niche games that are fun for what they are, the same way they view most RPGs made by Gust.
Also Grimoire: Heralds of the Winged Exemplar is unironically a better dungeon caller than any of them. Don't let the sapes and melonheads tell you otherwise.

This is all despite the only difference being the camera angle in how the games present themselves. That said, while Nocturne holds a special place in my heart, my experience with the rest of mainline has not been too good, like the SMT4 duology was mediocre. DDS, Raidou and Devil Survivor are all really good games however.

So I played the new Bravely Default II demo, had some things I liked and some things I hope they changed, but what really stuck out to me the most was that the characters seemed to be much more uncanny valley-like in their designs. I wouldn’t say it got to the point it unnerved me, but I would keep noticing how off-putting they looked, especially around the mouth when they talked, almost like I was looking at wax puppets or something. Did anyone else notice this or is it just me? I didn’t have this problem with the previous two games at all, but maybe it’s because they were on a much lower resolution DS while I’m playing the demo on my much bigger tv, so I can see the characters much more clearly.
