Discussion & Recommendation Thread
There's something about the simplistic nature of the GameBoy and it's games that always make them enjoyable to come back to and replay. They're games first and foremost, they get right to the point, and they have to given the hardware. There wasn't much room for cinematics, story, style, so the challenge and fun is at the forefront, streamlined into their core components without any unnecessary baggage. It's what video games should be.
Does anyone else feel this way? Have any thoughts, memories, opinions about the GameBoy and it's games? Are there any games that you go back to despite their age? Any that remain your favorite or an excellent game overall?
Feel free to discuss, related topics welcome.

I know that pain, especially with trying to see the gameboy color screen at evening & night times or no sunlight.
At least new backlights for gbc are actually good this time.
>>16889894
You in luck since backlight kits for the gba are quite affordable and good now with ips options & don't require a ags-101 being killed. Installing isn't too bad with basic experience and common sense.

Nigger it wasn't that bad. If millions of 8 year olds could tolerate it 20 years ago anyone can. Plus it's not as bad the GBA backlight

I remember loving the GBC Mario Tennis, but I don't know if it would hold up. I think I may have just been impressed by a sports game having stats and character progression. Also everything involving linking Gameboy games to the N64 was rad. Too bad that whole concept almost totally died after the Gamecube.

While I appreciate the fact I can play it outside without cranking the fuck out of the brightness, I am not a fan of having you use a crusty ass ancient snake light that I had to cut open and stick a new led in just to play it after like, 4pm I've been thinking of soldering in a front light, but I'm kinda apprehensive about it since it's a special edition.

Good picks, still have to actually sit down play through Kid Dracula one of these days.
I have too many fond memories of playing F1-Race and MK1/2 combo cart and mostly playing MK2 over 1, because MK1 on the gameboy is rough & kinda sucks.

Yeah I would keep that special edition standard, and just either get another model and put a backlight on that.

Are there other Japanese-exclusive GameBoy games that are big missed hits like that one? I always see that one, it looks decently fun, but I haven't got around to it. I don't even know if the translation is finished. I wish Nintendo would do more with their older titles like this and remake or at least translate all of their first party developed games that didn't see an international release. Seems they had a lot more variety in their early days, sometimes it gets tiring to keep seeing Mario, Link, Kirby, etc. over and over while brand new IPs are scarce and older ones and their unfortunate fans rot in limbo.

Last I knew, they were having problems with some of the Japanese specific humor and phrases that wouldn't make sense directly translated into English. I guess time flies, doesn't it? How did they get around that or what did they do instead?

I didn't notice any problems the couple times I played through it
IIRC in the case of puns, they did minor rewrites to the jokes so that a contextually relevant gag is in its place; preserve the humor without bending over backwards for a pun
but sometimes you do lose the gag almost entirely:
the Frogslator is, in japanese, the Bailingaeru, or Bilingua-frog. A pun that just can't cross the sea
Tokyo Comic Show Z is simplified to Igari Z, referencing a japanese comedian. Most likely changed for rom space more than anything else
the Mammoth Controller was actually made funnier in the translation, being given the name Mamicon, referencing the Famicom
here's a list of how things got translated throughout:

There was actually a game I really wanted to play, called Survival Kids for the Game Boy Color. Because of the 'HIDDEN GERMS' community, the price went from $20 to $70. It peaked my interest because of how complex the game was, a survivalist game on a fairly limited amount of space to good.
There is an okay game I got a hold of about a year ago, called Astro Rabby. Found it at a thrift store of all places. It's not particularly good, but the fact that it was an obscure Japanese exclusive was what made me buy it in the first place.

Agreed 100%. Such limitations require creativity, something many modern games lack.

Limitation breeds creativity, which is a concept many cannot understand. People in the DooM and Quake mapping scene look at me like I have two heads when I insist on making maps that will run well in the original versions of the games, on appropriate hardware. Then they have a fit when I respond that going all-out and making insane maps that can only run in source ports is a misdirection of effort.
There exists software for making simple GameBoy games, usually your simplified Link's Awakening kind of stuff. I assume you could do more by coding on your own in the framework, but I've not given it a go, myself.

I was going to post my favorite GB game V is more original but the levels and music feel interchangeable because everything is space/industrial themed, then realized the jump sprite looked sort of fucked up on a screen bigger than a sticky note, which turned into spending too long editing the game's graphics. I changed most of the player sprites and bosses that had inverted colors to look more how they did on NES, among other things (the game plays the same). It was tested pretty thoroughly so it should be done. There are three ROMs in the zip: the original, Edit1 which whitens Mega Man's face and removes the black helmet outline, and Edit2 which keeps his dark skin tone so you can distinguish his eyes and face. Even if you don't want to use any hacks, this game's worth playing if you're into Mega Man or action platformers.
I'm considering putting this on ROMhacking.net but I'd also have to do this for the Japanese version and make an account there. It'd also probably get rejected because it doesn't say "trans rights," translate the game to Brazilian or Spanish, make the game easier, or replace Mega Man with Bowsette.

It's amazing just how much Super Mario land 2 blows Super Mario Land 1 out of the water. Donkey Kong 94' is one of my favorite games of all time and how you do a remake. There's of course the great Wario Land series, Link's Awakening, etc.

Everyone should try Samurai Kid. It's a nice mix of action, platforming and puzzle solving. It plays really well and is one of the better gbc games I've played. Game & Watch Gallery 3 is a fantastic remake/minigame collection. Everyone should play the egg minigame(modern) on very hard. Using touchscreen controls.
