The problem with DK64 is that it plays more like a sequel to Banjo than a sequel to Donkey Kong Country. I like Banjo, but it's a different thing. The same could even be said about Mario 64 not really playing like the 2D Mario games, so much so that 3D Land and 3D World are basically just "what if 3D Mario actually played like 2D Mario translated to 2D, instead of mostly new gameplay with a Mario skin?" Of course Mario 64 is a great game, but I do like what 3D Land and World did.

Modern Sonic almost plays like a single player racing game more than a platformer. It's just not a very good one. There's not much platforming in it either though. Just go forward at high speed and try not to crash into things that you can't just automatically go through (like most enemies).

I respect Sonic Adventure for trying to take the gameplay of the Genesis Sonic games and translate them to 3D. They got the basic idea of Sonic's movement down, but his level design left something to be desired. They had some ideas that tried to replicate the level designs of the older games, but mostly the levels were very simple, which I think is very different from the old Sonic games, which had very complex levels.
The "problem" with Sonic Adventure is largely that it was too ambitious. It tried to be too many things. Like an adventure game, for example. I like the adventure game elements that they added, I think the Adventure Fields were done very well, but I can also understand why some people wouldn't be into that in a Sonic game. Same goes for all the other characters. I happen to like them, but I get why some people weren't into them. And that time could have been dedicated to more better levels for Sonic.
Adventure 2 fixed a lot of this, though. Streamlined everything. Half as many playstyles, no Adventure Fields. Sonic gameplay is still only one third of the game, but they kept the movement from the first one, which is what they got right, which actually feels like a translation of his 2D movement, and then had way better level design. Way more complex. Gave you incentive to explore while also platforming well and platforming fast. The two playstyles that were left were also improved in the same ways. Though I can still understand if people don't want that in a Sonic game. The Score/Ranking and mission systems are also logical additions that add a ton of fun to the game, and would have made sense even in the old games. Too bad that no game after Adventure 2 ever did them as well again.
Then Heroes and Shadow were overshadowed by gimmicks, and though they had the fundamentals (basic idea of movement and level design) right, they fucked up the execution. And then '06 had almost everything going for it in theory, IMO, but they released a prototype so far from ready that they didn't even have time to dummy out unfinished, game-breaking elements (like Sonic's Gem powers). So they threw the baby out with the bathwater and now we get Boost Sonic, catering to fake fans who never played the old games they claim to like, so they think Sonic was always just "GOTTA GO FAST." At least Unleashed and Generations were polished though. They had a lot going for them aside from the gameplay.
Want a good 3D Sonic game? Take the Sonic/Shadow gameplay from Sonic Adventure 2. Make a whole game of just that. You're done.
