>Why Portable 3rd?
Portable 3rd is good for beginners as its a little less clunky, far prettier, and has some quality of life changes to make organization and management easier. If you do start with this and can't read Japanese, though, you will be wanting to check the wiki for and asking for help in this thread to explain certain things. It only has a partial English translation.
SETUP

The default settings in the most recent release of PPSSPP should be enough, but just make sure that you have networking enabled, the ad hoc server is myneighborsushicat.com, port offset is zero, and that the virtual MAC address has been randomized, which you can do by clicking on it a few times. PPSSPP should also have a firewall exemption.
The more challenging aspect is that you will most likely have to configure your router for the online component to work, but it's still fairly easy to get working. You'll have to log into your router, which can be done by putting 192.168.1.1 into your browser. You'll want to either enable DMZ if you have it or forward UDP port 10000 and TCP ports 20001 to 20004 to whatever internal IP address is assigned to your computer.
The only option within the game itself is whether you manually or automatically select the room you want to join. Set this to manual, which it should be by default.

Check what internal IP address is assigned to your computer. If you are port forwarding and your router reset, it may have reassigned you a different one.

Use a packet analyzer like Wireshark and add the filter udp.port == 10000 || tcp.dstport >= 20001 and tcp.dstport <= 20004 to see if you're connecting to the IP addresses of other players at all. It's an anti-piracy measure I think, so you might need to drop these PSID files in you PAUTH folder, which is under memstick in your PPSSPP directory. I don't know which one decodes P3rd, but you can just dump everything in.

So the way we've been playing is coordinating through cytube, though most of the time we're in room 8 to try and avoid pubbies. Depending on the time, there are sometimes people in the first few rooms if you do want to try playing.
If you're still confused as to how you play the game, check out Freedom Unite's tutorial. The combat is mostly similar, but Portable 3rd has some clear advantages when it comes to gameplay, graphics, and organization. It's overall more enjoyable for co-op. even though it has less content.

That's true. I haven't invested as much time in figuring out hosting for those, but even so they're exclusionary as some systems probably won't be able to handle Citra. I'm not sure about 3U, but 4U also makes some unwelcome changes to progression that make it far more dependent on the single player and XX has this whole "arts" thing.

Related but not exactly the same, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate now runs really well on Citra and is incredibly simple to set up and play in co-op. All you need is the game and the 1.1 patch so you can put in the cheat to disable the game's built in 3D and dithering. You'll get a solid 60 fps on toaster-tier hardware at almost all times, only getting slowdown on monster roars.
Plus, the multiplayer connectivity doesn't need any adhoc servers or such bullshit since Citra has a built in thing to emulate 3Ds wireless local play, so you all just join the same multiplayer room and then locally join a guild hall in the game. I've been playing it with some pals and it's incredibly fun.

You'll be switching weapons a lot, based on the kind of monster you're hunting and party composition. Monster often have elemental strengths and weakness that you'll want to be wanting to take advantage of. This can be determined by either looking it up on the wiki or checking their armor stats.
If you noticed, the reason why I switched to light cannon was because we had four players and a gangbang on a Qurupeco will just leave everyone stunned. It's also impossible to hit flying monsters in the head with melee weapons.

They each have their place, but avoid any of the gunner weapons until you have an excess of resources. Gunner isn't as fun in general, is more technical as it requires more preparation beforehand, and uses a different armor type. As for the blademaster weapons, I'd avoid hammer and lance. The former is one of the two blunt weapons in the game, which inherently does less damage than all the other weapon types, it has no defense, and its spinning attack is hard to control, leaves you open, and is useless in most situations. The latter is just an uncool version of the gunlance.

Sure. You should do that Arzuros quest too so you unlock the Urgent Quest. There are key quests that you have to complete to progress to the next rank. We did most of them.

If the weapon is good enough you can do that but if you've picked something like Hunting horn or Gun lance then those will test your patience with hunt times above 20 minutes.

Depends on the game. Since we are talking about P3rd here, most of the weapons are pretty evenly matched except Hunting Horn and Gunlance.

now for some general info as I promised:

do the village quests, you need them to progress the "story" and unlock new tiers of weapons, armor and farm upgrades. the village quests are single player and usually 1-2 levels easier than the guild quests.
<what's the farm I thought this was about hunting
the farm is your best friend during most of the game, especially when you start getting significant upgrades, it's basically a place where you get free gathering spots without needing to go around maps looking for them.
<gathering wtf
gathering is like 50% of the game. I personally recommend gathering literally everything you physically can as 90% of the items are useful in a way or another, and by that I mean get bags full of crap every quest and build a massive stash. also, not everything that can be gathered on the field can be gathered at the farm.

the game has a combining mechanic which allows you to turn stuff even as basic as a stupid rock into powerful hunting tools such as flash bombs, or herbs into mega potions. it is true you can also buy a lot of the already refined goods, but I believe this is a better strategy as in the long run it'll help you save a tonne of money which you can then put into gear instead

are you fucking stupid? I said everything although there are some things that are very important:
>honey (mega fucking important especially early on when you don't have hive at the farm)
>blue mushrooms (like above)
>herb (basic ingredient for potions, though this one is so easy to find you shouldn't fuss too much, you'll find a lot of it by mistake)
>dung (yes it's shit and you use it to fertilise the fields at the farm and get x3 the stuff you plant)
>might seed and adamant seed (can be used to make attack and defense boosting potions OR planted in the field to sell and bank on them, very easy money)
>raw meat (you cook it and eat it for stamina)
I think these are the basic things you REALLY need to make sure you get. later you'll learn you need bugs, mushrooms and other weeds for a number of cool things like traps and bombs and whatnot.

alright you dumb idiot, it goes like this there's 2 kinds of quests, the fodder ones and the real ones. the fodder ones are called gathering and slaying quests and can be summed up like so
>slaying: kill x of y small monster
>gathering: gather x of y item and bring it back to the camp
>trouble may or may not arise
hunting quests on the other hand have you track and defeat a large main monster (or more), huntsing quests can end in 3 ways
>you get owned like the noob you are
>you kill the monster
>you capture the monster
<what's the difference between killing and capturing?
the difference is in difficulty and reward. rewards are randomized and split in two parts the common materials and the rare materials, the reward screen gives you an x amount of common rolls and an y amount of rare rolls. when you kill a monster you get to carve it 2+ times, carves are common material rolls. when you capture a monster you can't carve it of course but you get extra rare material rolls in the reward screen, so it's "easier" to get that one part you need for your shiny new weapon or armor set.
<why would I not capture monsters then?
because it's somewhat more tedious, as you need to bring a trap (or more if you fuck up the placement of the first or aren't fast enough), tranq bombs (or bullets) and then you need to make sure to spot when the monster is ready to be captured before you fuck him up for good.

I played the game a bit after it was released, the pirated version up until beating the dessert boss. It is fun for a time waster game. Though definitely it feels like it requires you to be less involved than previous games, plus the long missions making it a "time waster", but a lot more fun than most. But buying it would be just for Iceborn, it is not like I have friends. Though I am moving to Japan soonish (Corona is fucking up things now), but I doubt that many Japanese play the Steam version.
I do have all of the previous games downloaded and emulator ready.

Yeah, they patched out the proxy method a long time ago. That was one of the first things I encountered in my research. Long story short though, I've finally managed to acquire the DLC on my own and I've created a combined US/JP DLC file. For some reason the Palicoes don't seem to carry over between regions but everything else does. Here's a link:

You can use your existing character, but you do need to replace the "system" file in the save folder. That will likely change some of your in game settings and the circle pad pro activation, but you can just change it back.
Two additional notes:

I got icebourne and I enjoyed it just fine even though its easy to cheese because of the flinch shot, broken mounting and free environmental damage. Also the monsters would often bleed dust and rocks unlike in the 3ds games, thats what I personally hate about the game.
Otherwise the game is still a blast, you can mod it to change shit about the game too, I got a mod that makes monsters small or large crowns and I blazed through those achievements in no time at all.
I gotten 400+ hours within the last 3 months, most of it was grinding investigations so I can finally have decorations to have equipment sets like what speedrunners have.

I dunno. I was actually playing with another anon from here and I hosted a hunt with a mod that made monsters guaranteed to be large crowns. We hunted 2 HUGE BEEFY RAJANGS and we came out of it just fine so far.
When it comes to cucking modders, Capcom put in an anticheat in the game which stopped the modders for a little bit but raises the CPU burden the game gives and made everyones PC run the game less efficiently, some not at all and some streamers can't even stream anymore but modders can still do their shit apparently.

There's much less grinding for mats than on any other MH title too. Offline you're only going up to…what, a monoblos? You don't need to farm plates or jewels or otherwise wrestle with the desire-sensor. It's even smoother sailing if you SnS–shit's cheap man.
MH1 is MH stripped down to its core and therefore a perfect gauge of whether or not you'll appreciate the rest of the entries.
Plesioth sucks the hardest in this entry though.

moving on, the narga set is deceivingly good. I kinda wrote it off due to the coldsteel the hedgehog look, but damn evade extender and stamina recovery up are great paired together especially if you're a great sword user, if you also get felyne escape artist you got all you need for a "lol just don't get hit dude" style.

I did say it's good for great swords in particular. the whole point is that thanks to the larger distance you can cover with evades, it's possible to attack and just roll away to safety beyond most monsters reach in one or two rolls at most, not only that, stam recovery up means you don't really "need" to insta resheath after every attack to reposition, but rather can just roll in and out of the action without having to worry about having to either be on the move or have your weapon at the ready going at a snail's pace, both combined allow a way more flexible playstyle. granted, the latter can be achieved simply with dash and mega dash juice but you can only have so many of those unless you farm 6 gorillon r. ludroths

Its not that the game is hated. It is a very fine action rpg there is a lot of fun to be had but its more like Dragon's Dogma than an actual Monster Hunter game. You can just plow through monsters with one of many meta builds like the sticky Rajang build. That bullshit removed the satisfaction of quality prep time with the lads before a hunt starts. Thats half the fun.

Very true no argumenet here but not to the same extent as seen in MHW. You would have to wear multiple parts of gear and charms to just even activate that gears passive abilities. In MHW you just need to wear one part to get some additional benefit. Thats why previous MH games did require more prep time.

Iceborne is just an expansion but as expansions go its your typical Capcom bullshit. Put in a lot of new mechanics (stealing the clutch claw from Toukiden 2) to mix things up it does change the combat quite a lot. Yeah its the changing gear at camp that capsulizes MHW even more than it already is.

Some of the vertical maps are kinda annoying, and the two new weapons introduced in 4 are very versatile and strong as fuck, but it doesn't mean much to the average player beyond IG mount spamming being cheesy as fuck. Of the two new OP weapons, one actually has slightly better speed run times than GS against some monsters. This is unusual because while GS is massively powerful and easy to use at a low level, top performance with it is the most memorization and prediction heavy in the game. It's not so unbalanced that some weapons are unusable and some make everything too easy, it's that some are sub-optimal and the new mount mechanic can be exploited. It really only matters when trying the extreme end-game multiplayer balanced hunts solo, like if you want to solo Gogmazios, you probably shouldn't try to do it with a gunlance.
That chart is pretty exaggerated, but start with 3rd gen games like p3rd or 3U. 3rd gen has the best classic monster hunter gameplay in the series with no gimmicks (besides underwater hunts in 3U but those are few and actually great) 4u ramps up the aggression levels and adds the super extreme to the point of masochism endgame content but also has more gimmicks with mounting, frenzy mode and the awful Apex monster endgame gimmick, and is the hardest mainline game. Don't go for Gen Ultimate (the switch game) until you've played at least one other game. GU/XX is the monster hunter greatest hits game, and has an enormous amount of content especially with styles and hunter arts giving you new ways to play each weapon, but it's early game is worse for introducing new players.

It is, though if you have a WiiU or the state of WiiU emulation is good (I haven't checked) and you can run it that way, I'd recommend that instead for the larger screen and convenience. I played 3u and 4u on 3ds, but the 3ds version has no online multiplayer, and I don't think anyone has gotten it emulating well on citra yet either, so if you want to multi you should get it on the wiiU.
p3rd is also very easily emulatable with HD textures, though it's missing the underwater combat and my personal favorite monster in the series, Lagiacrus.
