The investors meeting is on the 31st and they have no release dates in their 2020 line-up besides Animal Crossing.
Will the meeting end up getting cancelled due to corona or will Nintendo just go in there with nothing?

They could just use video conferencing for their investor meeting. Though with it or not they have nothing to show. Nintendo pretends SMT 5 doesn't exist, and Bayonetta 3/Metroid Prime 4 are sure to appear at the very end of the Switch's lifespan. They ported everything of value from the Wii U, so they cannot rely on stealing from their one console to resell on the new one.

Pokemon DLC was announced, and should come out on schedule because TPC will break Game Freak's kneecaps otherwise. SS sold very well, probably DP numbers already, so we'll see how that turns out for them. Not to mention Xenoblade DE being all but given a release date at this point, 2 was a surprise hit so DE could be a thing that Nintendo brings up in their meeting.

They will just tell investors that content is coming. It's pointless to announce that content in the first half of the year, almost all of their titles are released in the second half every year. While early year releases are important to maintaining and even building momentum, Nintendo just doesn't have those kinds of development resources, or that kind of strong third party support other platforms have. Next Gen Nintendo will probably be releasing most of their games in the last quarter of the year instead of, and their output will be significantly less than what it is this gen.

>While early year releases are important to maintaining and even building momentum
While the end of the year is an important sales period, you do have to fill your release calendar with some shit every couple of months. Maybe more minor titles, again Monolith's Xenoblade fits that sort of thing fairly well. Animal Crossing coincidentally fits that role now, I feel like they delayed it partially because it needed work and partially to not compete with Pokemon (although if we're being honest I think Pokemon needed the delay more).
>Nintendo just doesn't have those kinds of development resources
They've got Wii money still, the Switch has been doing shockingly well as well, and Monolith Soft now has to help with almost every game and their staff is getting pretty huge.
>or that kind of strong third party support other platforms have
It depends on how well they can spin ports, Switch is getting a ton of ports and if we're being honest it's probably the only port option that matters outside of PC. Yeah they lack third party exclusives, but that's been a problem for everybody for a while now.

>Metroid Prime 4 (TBD)
>BOTW 2 (TBD)
>Bravely Default II (2020)
>Xenoblade Remake (2020)
There will also be a mention of upcoming DLC for Smash and Pokemon. They'll fallback on Animal Crossing and point to those sales as an example of how fast their games sell in the short time between release and the conference. There might also be a mention of the Pokemon Company and all of the games they helped to bring to their system as well as how they're "closely working with third parties and independent publishers to ensure the Switch exceeds expectations". Nintendo themselves will bring very little to the table and fallback on other developers to carry them through most of 2020.

End of the year is definitely the most important to sales but I feel Nintendo tends to underestimate the value of the early year, as if they forgot that the first half of 2013 was a big loss for the WiiU as it struggled to hold any momentum and as if this didn't repeat for the first half of 2018 for the Switch where it's fiscal year sales target was only unrealistic because they only released Kirby and Mario Tennis Ace for the entire 6 month period. I think about the first half of 2020 and I just wonder did Nintendo just have no plans to release any new titles for the first 3-6 months of the year, Animal Crossing was delayed, so what was supposed to launch at this point, perhaps it was Metroid Prime 4, that seems more like an end of year title anyway.
>They've got Wii money still, the Switch has been doing shockingly well as well
Bad wording on the resources part, they clearly have the money but they are severely lacking in development resources, Nintendo is having to put more and more staff onto an increasingly smaller pool of titles, which is the industry standard but Nintendo have been cannibalizing their external development studios to get this work done, which I would say is unhealthy for their release lineups, even though like you said Monolith Soft has grown considerably to pick up this slack, I'm confused why EPD haven't done this internally, even Retro Studios has been used for a long time as development support for games, that's just Nintendo studios, they are constantly hiring external developers to provide support as well, Treasure haven't made a game in years, now they just do development support, same with Tose.
Obviously they aren't getting third party exclusives, everything comes to PC sooner or later, but for their third party titles they recieve a small minority of ports, so it's still pretty lackluster, but to make a point out of it, third parties can not be relied upon for Nintendo's hardware, so why does Nintendo leave such massive gaps between releases? I initially thought Nintendo left these gaps so that third parties wouldn't have to compete with Nintendo games on the Switch, (Nintendo missing November in 2017, a major month for gaming, Doom, Skyrim, Sonic Forces, LA Noire, Rocket League, REvelations collection, Gear Club, all in the same month for Switch) But now it looks like Nintendo just doesn't have the muscle to keep a steady flow of titles for the Switch.

I'd also like to note that one Switch port I was looking forward to, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, was delayed to not directly complete with FF7's remake and a Mana game remake, so it's not just Nintendo who seem to have retarded planning skills, and it seems to have impacted Nintendo somewhat. As it stands, Xenoblade DE's release date might be in May if the leak is correct, the rating in at least one country is a sign, and being put on the eShop is any indication, so two months between games seems reasonable, and there's usually a summer drought in games anyway.

Rumour last week was an Indie Direct this week and a proper Direct in the following week.
Of course Corona-chan likely fucked up any plans they had, since Nintendo is now working from home on a world-wide scale.
This year's been a bit of a bust for Nintendo. They didn't have their big Christmas release (Animal Crossing got delayed until March) and they've been dead-quiet on anything for the first half of the year, and as a result there is no hype or even mention of what's coming for the second half.

Xenoblade was one of my favorite games of gen 7, but I don't think it will be a system seller or a big deal to a majority of potential/switch owners. Animal Crossing has a dedicated fanbase, but its also approaching soon. It does look like a dry 2020 for 1st party, which isn't bad, could give 3rd parties some time in the sun.

I'm sure Xenoblade will sell just fine. The 3DS remake sold around 560,000 copies in a market of about 10 million New 3DSs. That's a 5.6% attachment rate on a system that was on its way out. If the Switch version sells around that many copies you'd have about 2 to 2.5 million units.

Like the remake of a GBA game, and literally nothing else.

Which isn't all that hard considering that all that needs to be said is "We won't force censorship upon your games"

Which is quite ironic since, as far back as the N64, first-party titles were the biggest reason people bought a Nintendo console.

I want to believe that, but the national dex fiasco didn't hurt Pokemon sales and Smashfags are going to gobble up fighter passes despite not knowing who's in them yet.
>We won't force censorship upon your games
They keep saying that censorship is bad but at the same time they're trying to aim for E and T ratings. Take the Mai censorship in Smash for example, there's no reason she couldn't be featured while Bayonetta is allowed to be a playable character. It's almost like they don't know what their doing censorship-wise and everything being cut is coming from outside japan. Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe that there was an interview with Sakurai that said if people are more concerned with looking up a girl's dress than they were about guns than they needed to get their priorities straight.
>first-party titles were the biggest reason people bought a Nintendo console
I guess they expect to sell more on the guise of being able to play your games anywhere. The hybrid gimmick is working for them so far so there's less of an emphasis on selling their own software and more on selling the most software.

These games sold better than their previous versions. most people legitimately don't give a shit, they will willingly eat up shit, especially true for Pokemon which failed on every level except financially.
>Which is quite ironic since, as far back as the N64, first-party titles were the biggest reason people bought a Nintendo console.
Nintendo seem to think third parties have their back, they don't, they only see the Switch as a dumping ground for their trash, but Nintendo seems to think that that trash is the same as having a premier development team on their side. Sony secured at least temporary exclusivity for the remake of FF7, Nintendo couldn't even get the Switch as it's leading platform.
>Probably because they got in the habit of "filling" those gaps with games for their portable systems, while their home console games were still being made.
