Remember all those games that tried to capitalize on the success of Devil May Cry and copy its gameplay, but never got real popular? Honestly looking back some of these games were actually great and I wonder why they never took off. Especially for Bujingai, that game was CUHRAYZEE even before Devil May Cry 3.

For Bujingai it probably didn't help that the protag looks like a turbo faggot (spelled with a capital FUCCBOI).
I'm just going through blood will tell, it's full of secrets and collectables. Clearly it was made with a lot of love and meant to be played several times.
I remember Chaos Legion being pretty fun, will have to re-download it and give it another go.
Haven't tried nano breaker, but wasn't there an escort mission or two in that? Please confirm because that may be a deal breaker (no pun intended).
I can't believe you didn't include Shinobi/Nightshade, specially after that other anon kept bringing the latter up in several threads. There's also Samurai Western, which is an absolute fucking blast from start to finish.
I haven't played Sword of Etheria, but that was also recommended to me at some point. The combo system involves playing volleyball with the enemies, juggling them between you and your npc allies.

I'll mention Onimusha Dawn of Dreams. Although the series isn't obscure either, I don't really feel like it got the attention other series (Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, God of War) got. Dawn of Dreams was seen as not as good as 1 and 2 but I liked it.

Dawn of Dreams was a totally different beast compared to Onimusha 1/2. The first two games are very weird: faster than resident evil, but way slower than DMC. They didn't click for me. Dawn of Dreams was a step in the right direction, but felt pretty uninspired. At least it had a hell of a lot more polish than most games ITT–assuming you care for that.

Also Swords of Destiny. And Demon Chaos, which the most noteworthy aspect seems to have been having a mode that pits the player against 65,535 foes at once. Honestly, it seems a fair amount of these failed to get cleared for North America, be it due to lack of publisher interest of SCEA barring them for whatever reason (like not pushing the system's graphics enough?), while PAL was more willing. Maybe they get more attention on European focused boards/sites?
>>16871427
Maybe the idea is to group brawlers into the idea, which obviously wouldn't hack or slash when they don't have blades or what not. Though, that's giving them the benefit of the doubt, and it wouldn't surprise me if sounding "too violent" was exactly the reason.

Hack n Slash doesn't quite sell the likes of DMC, Bayo, MGR etc. They are ultimately action games, hack n slash games but the approach to combat is to make it look cool and make the player feel cool. NG isn't quite the same because simply beating the levels/encounters/game is the reward due to its difficulty.

the term character action came about while looking for some way to describe that the player could do all the cool shit they see in the cinematics
for example, in DMC3 the opening shows Dante jumping on a downed enemy and surfing on him while shooting at the others. Looks cool, but most games wouldn't let you do that in gameplay. DMC3 on the other hand lets you hop right on a guy and surf–almost no control, but great style points

More Japanese takes on western settings would be neat. Only really know of that, Rising Zan, and Wild Arms series that do (with the latter being a niche within a niche as "weird west" and not strictly wild west). I suppose despite the novelty likely giving it appeal to a degree, it's probably hard to sell publishers on to fund out there.

Maybe not now that Dororo had a new anime adaptation to drive some interest, but it really didn't sell that well out here (probably didn't help it was an adaptation of a work that hadn't had anything new done with it for over thirty years at the time), and I recall it getting pretty middling "professional" reviews. Of course, it could well be one of those games that's benefited from time and word of mouth, and the fucking scalpers have certainly benefited from the situation themselves.

5. Git gut.
6. Enjoy slashing snipers' bullets back at them, slipping across the map up to a machinegunner's face as he misses you only to have him whistle at how slick you are before you disembowel him, chasing a fat nigger around with a parrot on your ass, going into ultimate master mode and achieving a 100-kill combo, killing a fat jew to avenge your brother's fall into DISHONOR and much, much more.

I got curious and checked the Japanese PSN just to see if it even got rereleased out there. It doesn't appear to have been, nor has Way of the Samurai 3 for that matter. As to the west, I wouldn't be surprised if Atlus doesn't have the license to it anymore, and thus haven't been able to rerelease it in English either. Assuming they'd have cared to, anyhow.
Actually, if it ever did get a port or something, I'd have to question if there would even be interest from anyone in bringing it over again, considering how it didn't exactly sell very well prior. Would probably be NISA if anyone, given how they've been picking up rights to more formerly Atlus published works.

As for Dororo, it is a very old manga and it adheres to techniques of the past so if it seems that way, it's because smaller eurocomics outside of france and belgium read that way as well. It's a fun story but the best way to experience it is via the game.
But, Shiki Satoshi, the absolute chad behind X Blades(the manga), is doing his own adaptation of Dororo nowadays and it is a treat.

The game basically goes through the same beats as the original story but adds some stuff from before, new side-quests obviously since you do fight all 48 demons in it and changes the ending mostly to give it a proper conclusion for Hyakkimaru.
So far Satoshi's manga is respecting the old version of Tezuka while taking on the attitude of the game and newer anime in mind, having the world and the heroes be a bit more action-savvy.

Not disagreeing with any of these choices being but I wouldn't exactly call them obscure. Knda like how the Wolverine game for PS360.

actually obscure:
Dark Angel - Vampire Apocalypse is a top-down hack & slash from early in the system's life
you would choose your adventuring venue (necropolis, etc) and fight various types of undead
IIRC there was a time limit and part of the challenge was to level yourself up enough for endgame

Is Shadow of Rome considered obscure? The game is fucking great, the stealth parts with the side character kinda suck though.

Onimusha 1+2+3 was this weird hybrid of third person Resident Evil controls and Ninja Gaiden style game progression. Complete with arcade like bonus challenge modes and hard mechanics you have to master, I explicitly remember one game mode where if you didn't master parries and counters you were pretty much fucked.
Gogandantess is still my favorite character, he was the best swordsman as far as I'm concerned. I kept trying again and again until I beat him legitimately in a sword duel.

Neat. You don't see monster girl protagonists often in commercial games.

Nomura stupidity at its finest. I do like how each character has a different perspective in the story, and each one's perspective sheds different light on the overall plot. That aspect and its short length makes it easily replayable, too. However, the cutscene to actual gameplay ratio is absurd and it feels a lot like you're watching a movie with short gameplay bits. The story is also pretty dumb.

I dunno if pic related is obscure but it's definitely overshadowed by its predecessors. It's pretty satisfying since the game rewards finishing fights fast, even if it's a bit braindead once you realize most of the game can be beaten by mashing airdash->attack->airdash->attack.

This game makes me mad since it's got so much good stuff in it but the lack of enemy variety nearly ruins it, which is a shame since the 3 diskarmours you get have fun movesets.

I can totally see it, problem is it looks like a game that would ultimately just make me want to replay Onimush, might go for Threads of Fate or Zan though. Threads of Fate in particular has been on my backlog forever(we’re talking since the 90’s), I just never got around to actually playing it.

>PS4 remake coming out
It's been out. Since last October even. And for that matter, I really haven't heard a lick from anons as to how it was, whether it just wasn't of interest after the PSP remake prior or simply it being PS4 and not wanting Sony to get money. Certainly drove demand and prices on the originals up, at least from what I've seen over the last few months around my neck of the woods.
