There's this late 90s/early 00s Western Military SciFi I really miss in vidya.
Do you have something similar feelings /v/?

Retro-sci-fi aesthetics. The first Mass Effect made an attempt at bringing it back, but we all know what happened with that franchise.
Stuff like the original Battlestar Galactica ship designs, or the Terran Federation designs in Planetside 2. Boxy-squarish utilitarian looking things, not the smooth lines of over-design Apple shit.
I also love the 80s/90s anime aesthetic, especially combined with dithering on old 256 colour monitors.

This. Every single aspect of pop culture was best in 1998. Arguably 1999. Granted, it took a couple years for the ultimate aesthetic to hit vidya in the form of Jet Grind Radio.

Fantasy's kind of being supplanted by realism, edginess, or the color brown depending on what genre we're talking about. In video games I think it's driven by the increasing ability of the hardware to render realistic humans, which makes devs want to render realistic everything else to go with it. That doesn't affect games that aren't trying to have realistic humans, but that sector is being edged out and at the same time has Japanese wacky design influences pervading it.

No things are definitely not as good now as they use to be. I've gone back and played games that I use to adore, worried that I won't find them as good as when I was younger and lo and behold they are still as good. Which got me to thinking "well maybe it still is just nostalgia" but then I go play some older game from a previous era that I never played before, maybe that I never even heard of when I was a kid, AND IT STILL TURNS OUT TO BE GOOD. Same thing has happened with movies and other sorts of entertainment.
We are in a cultural decline and pop culture and entertainment culture has not been spared from that decline.
Unless you know something new is good, just stick to older things or things that semi accurately mimic older things or things that have only slowly changed over the years. Why do you think the Dragon Quest series has so many fans?

That's pretty much my take. I was opening the floor for someone to prove me wrong and point out something recent that tops it, like maybe Sekiro, except that what I saw of Sekiro was not very aesthetic. A dude with steel wool hair. I might need to look into it again.

>We now have the technology to go full Frank-Frazetta-living-paintings rendered in high definition 3D
I've thought the same about Yoshitaka Amano and his weird, watercolory style where the edges of solids aren't always defined. Figure out how to render that in 3d for a Final Fantasy instead of anime boyband simulator.
I worry that videogaming as a medium is now too escapist to embrace anything transcendent, like those Frazetta paintings. I look up "top 10 games of 2019" and get Jedi Fallen Order, starring the world's averagest man. There's a bug-eyed sheboon and the world's averagest woman as the love interest. The only cool characters were, of course, the PURGE TROOPERS. They exude strength and that means they're each individually hitler incarnate. It's slave morality dictating the aesthetics of everything.
The Outer Worlds: beige lesbians in space.
DMC5: Not terrible; I presume Dante and Virgil have their usual swagger, even if they're otherwise waifish.

If only, it's to show just how many hacks work on visual presentation and how many are manchildren that never grew up from Saturday Morning cartoons.
Barely any grit or grime in modern vidya, nothing but cartoony colorful saturated garbage now.
Grunge, industrial, 80s SciFi and Quake defined an era of developers and vidyagamers, now they're defined by indie rock, capeshit, 80s neon and League of Legends.

I'd actually take a game that actually looked sufficiently like the cartoons I used to watch. Shitty flat shading, just barely on the "not enough detail" side. Janky animation. Bleeding color. Monochrome computer monitors with green lines all over the place. Big chunky vehicles with shitty sounding lasers all over them so there's no blood. It'd actually take a respectable amount of work to get a modern game to look authentically bad without copping out and just making a normal modern game with pink and cyan instead of brown and beige.

Oooh, speaking of!
Terada's watercolours from the original Legend of Zelda manuals. They would make a fantastic art style for a Zelda game, instead of the nuCel shading we got with BOTW (which despite itself was still one of the more competent aesthetics from the last few years).

Sekiro is pretty good and I think could be considered one of those rare modern exceptions. Several times when playing it I got flashbacks to playing Ninja Gaiden (NES) as a kid. Nioh gave me the exact same feeling at few points too. There were just enough mental switches flipped that that gave me a feeling of familiarity.

That's what I found just now, in a cursory survey of 2019— but only on mobile and switch, the former being inundated with "indie" type shit, and the latter with Mario. Other platforms had the games I listed, and that last line I wrote (about graphical fidelity being used to highlight mediocrity) was about the Sekiro dude specifically: his scarred face and dried-out old man hair. A kind of "grit", I would think.
>now they're defined by indie rock, capeshit, 80s neon and League of Legends.
Equal parts too gay and too devoid of new ideas. So sure enough, they end up regurgitating the same pixelshit and/or ersatz-retro look, and games based on other games. The feedback loop of developers bringing nothing but their experience of playing games is arguably the deadlier cancer.

>Which character was that?
The main guy. I was exaggerating, but my point was that the designers intentionally made him kind of old, because that's what they do now. Modern design mandates that characters be "flawed". Old, bug-eyed, or just totally unremarkable.

I don't think you're entirely off. Games generally really do seem like they're drab and have no sense of unique identity anymore. It mostly seems like the majority tries their hardest to avoid standing out or "be themselves". Last few games I can think off that did tried that were back in the 7th generation. A lot of games are really bland today.

I suppose you're right. It's very bland.. yet a lot of discussion with tech currently (not just with that show) also tries to convey that people are living a false reality. Where even the "mundane" is usually the fakest shit. The advent of social media has done that. Taken the fascination out of technology and reexamined if it's worth having fun with.

It's not age. It's a mark of the Dragon heritage. I do agree that the world and characters of Sekiro do look more "realistic" than Nioh but it does work for the setting and there are a few genuinely beautiful places in the game and possibly the best looking snake that has ever appeared in a video game. The Divine Child and O'rin are also very cute. Emma ain't bad to look at either.

No way. That's totally unrealistic.

Payday 2 has a snubnose version of >>16880868 in it, and at least a couple years ago last time I played it it was easily one of the best weapons in the game, at least for a shotgun build.

This is not buckshot, anon. AFAIK the .410 pellets are birdshot tier.

Checkmate atheist! While there is other .410 buckshot shells available; I think the most you can have are 5-6 buckshot balls, so using .45 Colt or birdshot are better defense options.

No it didn't, it was a different gun entirely. Made by the same company under the same "Judge" line of weapons, though.

Man unless you're talking about that kind of over the top fantasy art in general. What the fuck are you smoking? Gottlieb had some of the shittest art in general on pinball machines of that era, all the way up until they finally got their art department somewhat in order around like 1995, only to shut down completely one year later in 96. That Gladiators backglass is legendary in it's awkward shittyness.

Probably both, most likely mostly nostalgia.

Good thread, it looks like you all already covered most of what I and many others who I have talked to IRL think. The sleek, corporate, minimalist design look sterile. This also applies to art and drawings that doesn't have sufficient detail or shading applied. The problem with it is that it is everywhere, from icon design on e-mail providers all the way to architecture.

A big problem with a lot of modern games is how many of them ignored everything Half-Life 2 taught about lighting.
Say what you want about the gameplay, but you're fucking lying if you say the game isn't stunning graphically even today. Look what happens if you take that lighting away.

Lighting and textures
One big issue about the lighting is the monetization of these pieces of shit modern games that relies heavily on skins, so they gimp the lighting to not make the game look too uncanny and produce skins much faster.
You can see this with TF2 for example
