After playing more roguelikes, i can articulate why i don't like the game as much. Its the cursor. You do a lot of movement, selection etc, while other games are centered around one entity.

Also the tranny shit isnt bad per se because you can segregate them and starve them or do whatever fun things to them. Remember when they removed the ability to make merfolk skull totems? Mod stuff in and get fucking creative.

I can’t see DF dying off (except through political shit like this). I love the concept of DF; no other game I’ve found has its depth, complexity, or style. Some variations are fun (Rimworld, for example), but I’d really like to play DF because no one else seems to be autistic enough to actually model everything that it does. If I’m wrong, let me know. Theres also another reason: the game logic operates on an ass backwards system which bottlenecks not on the CPU clock, but on the CPU cache, and the only reason newer CPUs can handle dorf better is because they got incrementally bigger and faster cache every generation.

It would obviously not be easy, but unless it happens, the game is only going to be less and less playable as more half-baked features are added in. The longer he waits, the more painful it is going to be to add. If it never happens, the game isn't even worth working on at this point, and he's just harvesting donations from people who haven't seen the writing on the wall.

The second best alternative would be just to tack things like temperature, pathfinding, and other fort-mode calculations. That would be a lazy solution that would also make forts significantly more playable.

Updating fort mode is pointless when I have to cut my population, embark on an undersized chunk of land, never play with any liquids, disable caverns, disable temperatures, disable cave-ins, and use third-party tools to help clean/decompose excess items. I've never been desperate enough to use that mod that removes all the material types and compresses everything into a generic material, but I've considered it. I've also considered going back and playing 40d on an i9, just to see if I could actually make progress.

And it's frustrating as all hell, because I want to play the game. It's actually a good game. But the chief issues are mechanics that don't fully function and the game not being playable while utilizing even half of the game's features. Military storage from the 2014 update still doesn't function to this very day, and frame rate death is the ending of the majority of my own forts, but Toady sits down and spends weeks coding fucking polyamory. It makes me question why I even care about the game.

Look. I’m the last person to call for loose code. I still remember the late ‘80s and early ‘90s when I could look at a piece of developed software and be stunned at how beautiful it was despite having to deal with no more than a 256 byte (yes) cache and 2 megs of RAM. But this isn’t that. Toady doesn’t have hardware restrictions causing him to make the game single threaded. When he started development, he didn’t even have hardware restrictions that caused him to rely on CPU cache. There was no excuse for it then, and there’s sure as shit not one now. And look, cache sizes have been roughly doubling roughly every 5 years. How big is DF? Because there’s no way you’re loading the game into cache in less time than it would take to rewrite the damn thing the way it should have been the first time.

Well, there IS a steam remake in the works, though the jury's out on how long that will take. I personally just moved onto greener pastures when Toady started sperging out and blocking critics, I drift from roguelike to roguelike these days now.

The fact of the matter is, however incompetent the optimization and groundwork for the game, the guy has dumped decades into developing this game, and there's just not many games on the market with that kind of constant development. In searching for a substitute, you're likely going to have to make a compromise of quality vs. detail. If you're willing to be flexible with that tradeoff, it's entirely possible to find a game that offers comparable if not superior quality overall, albeit one that does not contain every feature you'd ideally prefer. If you're willing to make that compromise, it's worth finding a better game. If not, well I'm afraid you're stuck with Drag Queen Story Hour: Dwarf Edition.

What you perceive as FPS death from a CPU clock bottleneck is actually latency from chache misses which is the actual bottleneck. Dwarf Fortress isn't even affected by CPU speed, making it faster through multi-threading won't change anything because the game is waiting on what is being written and fetched into the cache.

Even the steam version, which may actually rely on the CPU "the conventional" way would probably only be like how sound is handled, which would be on a separate thread from the rest of the game.

CPU cores generally have their own L1 cache, so even if cache misses are the only problem multithreading would still be a speedup. Not to mntion how your CPU generally processes other stuff if possible while waiting for cache, which is more likely to happen when multithreading.

It all boils down to accessing memory. Its as follows RAM latency, RAM speed, cache size (you need at least an> 256 mb L3/L4 cache). In fact, assuming you did manage to commit the miracle of multi-threading without untangling the spaghetti code the game's speed would shoot up so high it would be unplayable from the Dwarves dieing before you could react, but that is just a neat hypothetical hopefully anyone who would seriously try and multi-thread Dwarf Fortress would throttle the calculations on purpose so that doesn't happen.

CDDA is one giant mess of open source spaghetti coding, essentially anyone can add shit to CDDA via forks and if its popular enough and good enough then you can expect your contributions to merge with the main game and never be credited properly for it or properly bug tested to be fixed unless you volunteer to do it again. Its just like SpaceStation13, a monster born from a shitty outdated codebase but with such meticulous detail that nobody can port it over to anything better.

Toady's way of doing things is frustrating but it isn't because its the wrong way of doing it, its the fact that he is doing it by himself. All the meticulous and constant testing should be handled by multiple people but you should be doing meticulous multiple runs to make things work properly, multi-threading shouldn't even be on the table if you're not a good coder and Toady knows he isn't good enough so props to him, and the memory thing makes it more like those simulations they use for research which is fine because Toady explicitly is making a simulator and not a game.

Most of the hate for him now is pent up resentment for him relying on pop science magazines for statistics and turning into the same ilk that you'd find anywhere.
