What a terrible thread. I'll bite though.

2010: the graphic action game (yes, it's based on the movie). If you wonder how you turn that doze fest into a game, take Qix, and a bunch of chipsets you have to link together without crossing them twice. That's the game. It's fun for what it is.

You know what Centipede and Oil's Well are (if you don't, shame on you, go play them, they're still genuinely engaging).

Montezuma's Revenge is a bitch with touchy controls, but it overall, controls much better than you'd expect a Colecovision game to control (also it has some smooth animations).

Adding Venture to the pile for nostalgia's sake.

My XE likes to lock up in BASIC mode when I press enter/return. When I press that key in the test mode, it's fine. Alas, I have no games for it, besides the built-in Missile Command.

My dad actually used to have one of these. He said it either got lost or thrown away in a move at one point. I wouldn't really be able to use it, considering how difficult it would be to set up. Even if I wouldn't use it a lot, would be nice to have a piece of history. No way I'm going to buy one of these now.

Nostalgia would be the only fuel to power me through playing first-gen console games, but I started with generation 2 (Atari VCS/2600 and kin), so I don't even have that. The setup is piss-easy, really. If you have a TV with RF input (my 40" LED set does, surprisingly), you just need an RCA to Coaxial adapter, and you're good to go. Failing that, use a VCR to receive the RF signal with the adapter, and have it spit out composite or s-video (if you have an SVHS deck) to the TV. Cheap solution? Old capture card, and OBS to display the video. There's a bit of lag, but it's manageable.

I had one of those intellivisions back in the early 80's, even as small kids we made fun of the graphics. Coleco looked a bit better but arcades blew them all away. NES killed the arcades though no one really wants to admit it.

At my store we've had a bunch. The Coleco is an impressive system, not just for its hardware but also its RGB rendering which can be output with a simple mod. The coolest thing is the Coleco Adam computer which is technically an expansion module. If you ever get one you need all the parts - system, keyboard, and as you might not expect, the printer. The printer provides half the power for the system including the tape drives and will not work without it plugged in. Makes it a difficult set up to manage but still really cool.

If you ever get a chance to play on a working one it's a great experience. The controller can be a little weird at first but there's a number of accessories to get different kinds of setups going. Big fan of the roller controller and with a some clip-on arcade sticks the directionals feel really nice. Otherwise you can hot-swap for a genesis pad if your game only has one action button.

The issue is that this console requires a special box to use due to its weird adapter. That means there's no option for coaxel, you gotta use satan's forks. And even if you get it to work, you need a boobtube tv to use the overlays.

Ah, the lovely nightmare that is those goddamn 300Ω to 75Ω adapter blocks. Yeah, at that rate, I would just use emulation/simulation, but even then, there's only so far down the tech chain I'll even go anymore. If I were to find an Odyssey or Fairchild console out in the wild, I would still buy them in order to preserve them, but I sure as hell couldn't enjoy them in any way.

b907b2  No.16738586

the issue is that you need a certain tv size to even play games because you have to put transparencies over the screen to see the field of play

Allow me to shill a relevant, on-topic¹, unreleased product

¹ What the fuck do they mean about bringing back games/series from this generation? What are the companies actually going to do with that? Also, how do you take the emphasis of being a casual console, considering one of the first announced original titles is a continuation in Earthworm Jim, a series not known for ease? Is it more marketing or will they really focus on gameplay focused games for the system?

They claim to be getting only exclusive games, if this is legitimate it would seem they will have heavy influence over what gets on their console, but maybe they'll put any game on as long as an exclusivity contract is involved.

It could be a crock of shit but it looks like they're taking it more seriously than that Atari comeback piece of trash announced last year or the year before. At least they have a game
