Are there any good multiplayer RPGs out there? By that, I mean an RPG that has multiplayer throughout the course of playing it, not just games with multiplayer battle/hunting systems like Pokemon or Monster Hunter.

I know some of the Final Fantasy games have something like that, but it mostly amounts to the second player sometimes being able to control the menus. The Tales games also have something similar, and it operates better, but mostly just gives the second player control of one character in combat only.

I've been playing a bit of Dokapon Kingdom lately, and it kind of scratches this itch, but lets down with simplicity in the job system and the bullshit that RNG can throw at you (It's incredibly easy to simply get fucked to death early on, or even in the middle of the game, by bad RNG while other players are getting a head start. This gets worse when other players decide to then fuck you even further to death). It's easy to spend over an hour of real world time effectively doing nothing because RNG decided to destroy any hopes you have at keeping up.

Is there anything like Dokapon Kingdom, but done better? Or even better, a full-fledged multiplayer RPG that gives the second player something resembling actual control in the game instead of just one character for combat?

Secret of Mana and Seiken Densetsu grant the second player a fair amount of control but they are ultimately tied to the first player's lead

you might enjoy Divinity Original Sin, which has local split screen coop in which one player can fuck around and explore while the other fights in turn-based combat

I had more fun playing this than I ever did with Mario Party. It's essentially Dragon Quest + Monopoly. Not to mention, you can choose the player you specifically want to fuck over.

I've been meaning to get around to playing Divinity lately. That could actually work, though it's pretty expensive if we both have to buy our own copies.

Another one I can't believe I forgot is Baldur's Gate. I played a lot of BG2 when I was a kid. I don't know what the situation is with the modern releases, or if gemrb is a viable path to a multiplayer playthrough of the games.

It is a lot of fun. It just gets frustrating when you get fucked over and spend 45 minutes doing nothing. Turning darkling is alright, and lets you fuck over other players and gain some experience in the process, but having to lose all your assets in the process is totally shit, especially because it dumps you without any money in the end.

I made this thread actually because I got in that situation as a magician, and immediately after coming out of darkling, I got sniped on the overworld by another player and lost my magic attack. I didn't have cash because of darkling, and I went through the water to get back to the castle because a thief was on the other path, and a water monster used waterfall and destroyed my physical weapon, leaving me with no money, no magic attacks, and no physical attacks. I spent the next hour trying to grind enough money back up to buy a simple magic attack, but every time I got anywhere close, a CPU player would come back and fuck me up again and steal all my money.

Never use AT as a dump stat. If you end up in an unfortunate position, you have no way of recovering.

Doesn't the turn-based nature of RPGs make multiplayer kind of superfluous? I mean, what's really the difference between letting your friend control a few characters, as opposed to just handing the controller to him? Multiplayer just doesn't make sense to me unless you can act simultaneously and independently of each other, or are at least fighting each other.

I feel like Dokapon Kingdom is best played with the starting level set to maximum. The RPG stuff seems good on paper, but in practice 9 out of 10 town bosses never bother to use Counter, so a lot of early and midgame is a race to either the nearest weapon shop or the nearest town boss. The game truly opens up once you hit endgame and it becomes a chaotic struggle for terrain control and protection.

Depends on how the gameplay is implemented. Tales games do it alright, but they don't give any decent control outside of combat. In games with a real-time battle system like Baldur's Gate, it can work alright. I don't remember how dialogue worked in multiplayer, though.

Dokapon works by being competitive, but the balance is too poor for my tastes.

In Final Fantasy games with the feature and a few other RPGs, multiplayer is literally equivalent to handing a controller around, as only one controller has control at a time. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles handles it OK, but the need for a bunch of GBAs makes it annoying. We're doing Dokapon Kingdom via an emulator in the first place, so we'd have to figure out that weird setup.

I like RPGs, and I like the idea of doing them with other people, either competitively or cooperatively. I just don't know a lot of games that do this very well at all.

Man, I hope it turns out good, I even had the GBA link cable but since I had no one else interested I never went out and bought the game.

Nintendo's business strategy has always been to use highly available/cheap costing technology in innovative ways. I remember hearing that because Nintendo was pushing the GBA/GCN link meme at the time, they were forcing 3rd party devs to take advantage of it. Supposedly, Squeenix was only allowed to release FFCC on the GCN if they integrated that feature

90%+ of Dragon Quest 9 can be played co-op with 1-3 other players

I'm honestly thankful that they didn't try to push that on Namco for Tales of Symphonia.

Well just pirate the game then and if you feel like they deserve it buy it afterwards.
