the roleplaying in later entries is nonexistent and combat was always stale and single note, it's popular because it's a reddit game and a streamer game. It has bland lore zero story. If it wasn't the reddit darling it'd be slain in the steam ratings. And it's focus on enemies being aggressive with high damage output isn't difficulty. It isn't a role-playing game you dumb faggot, none of the DS games had any role-playing. The RPG in ARPG is essentially vestigial, they tend to borrow conventions such as stats, inventories, etc but the actual role-playing element is gone.

That being said, playing Sekiro has made me realize one thing about earlier FROMSoft games at least: the invasion/PvP mechanics just end up harming the game in the long term due to the map design and balancing considerations that come with it.
