f37e97  No.16699328

"As you know by now, if you're still playing PE, our lobby server had an issue where all the code base got deleted from its server. After trying to fix it for the last month, we've arrived at the unfortunate conclusion that it's a lost cause unless we completely rewrite the code from scratch. We used a software called U-link for PE, and that software is now defunct. Even if we had the original U-link code, we still don't have the configurations and additional code we wrote back in 2013. Under the circumstances, we just don't have the resources to rewrite the multiplayer code for PE. We're truly sorry for this.

Without the multiplayer, Planet Explorers will not be the complete package that we originally envisioned. Thus, starting next week, we'll make the game free. We'll also try to make the game code available online (we're still looking into the how part).

Going forward, we will be making a PE2. It will be much better than the original, as we've matured as a studio. We'll probably start on that project next year. We'll put that game's alpha on a branch of Planet Explorers for free for you to play when the time comes.

Thank you all for supporting us all this time.

Planet Explorers Team"

Fucking staggering. This is why you should always use distributed version control. That way everyone who ever contributed code to the project has a copy of all of that code on their machine. For what it's worth, I really enjoyed Planet Explorers SP.

The soundtrack is great and the planet can be beautiful.

The vehicle/weapon creation is also very powerful, tough vehicles are limited in size (100 meters IIRC)

3 2 1 is the golden rule when doing backups.

Three backups, on at least two different types of storage media, with at least one of them in a separate and secure location.

It sucks that they have fucked the pooch this badly by losing their code, but at least they're not being complete cunts about it. What's still available is available for free and they're going to make another version/sequel which will be free for current users of PE when it's ready.

Complaining about gender-locked armor?

Are you retarded?

You are going to have followers and colonists in your colony that you can equip with the stuff that doesn't fit you.

Once you get better weapons, things pick up. You really shouldn't expect much from wooden arrows, especially not against giant, armored enemies.

You can close the replicator window and so stuff, the things will build in the background. Later, when you build a base and recruit colonists, you will be able to assign them to mine, build, farm, doctor, etc…and the colony will run itself. This also includes industrial replicators.

ac2da0  No.16701556

Not just for realism, but it reinforces the crafting elements of the game. Things break and you have to make more, where if they didn't make it feel like everything was made out of tin and balsa, those resources would become wastes of time the second you had a decent gear set. It's still a shitty way to go about it, though.

>it reinforces the crafting elements of the game

Is that the actual thought process behind it? That whole massive painful nuisance is just a counter-inflationary measure? They could've put in shops, or repeatable minor upgrades with exponentially increasing costs, or just let players be Minecraft autists and have such a surplus of materials that they can build working Gameboy emulators or whatever.

Are these devs so detached from everyday life that they don't understand that repeatedly forcing someone to stop and do something makes it a chore no matter how much fun it'd be otherwise?

371e05  No.16701784

it builds a feeling of progression, there must be pain to progress or it feels worthless.

if there was no pain it's the same as the feeling you get when you cheat in a game and give yourself max stats and gear, you quickly test the limits of the engine, realize it's an engine, and loose all sense of immersion in the game, ultimately quitting 10 minutes later out of boredom.

7e9d1e  No.16703272

>>16701725

The degradation (especially on good weapons) is so slow and the resources so abdundant once you make your base, that it really doesn't matter except in early game. It makes sene that a brozne weapon will dent nad break easily, but a good still one will last a lot.

You also have repair machines that can repair every item to 100% every time you return to your base/colony.

It's a bloody survival game - maintainance of equipment SHOULD be a thing.

6cce59  No.16712330

I've owned this game from early access.

The short version of the story is that the developers were overly ambitious and tried to make a 3D version of spore (the creator editor shit) with story heavy RPG and tower/base defense elements and procedural generation, AND multiplayer AND a fucking strange dwarf fortress adventure mode which sucks ass.

The game was mostly complete before multiplayer broke, the game is kind of janky anyway but it's worth playing for sure. Kind of sucks for the people that bought it, now that it's free but I think /v/ will probably enjoy the parts of it that are interesting.

If you aren't playing sandbox then you have to follow the story quests to unlock the designer elements, all you can design at first is swords, later you can make land vehicles, buildings, air vehicles, guns etc.

The creators are powerful but pretty complex to use. It's fun but janky.
