What games have good monster designs? Stuff that really makes you appreciate the design space games have for weird and wonderful creatures other mediums can't or won't touch.

JRPGs are the obvious one. Final Fantasy's bosses really shine as the games go on. Huge cool dragons and body horror freak shows.

Toukiden has some great designs but Monster hunting games all suck and aren't worth playing unless you're an autistic sperg who wants to grind a new pair of socks for 4 hours just to fight a recolour of the same enemy you just had to grind for socks

Devil May Cry and Bayonetta both have excellent enemy designs. DMC3 with the glowy sniperfags being up there with the original Sin scissors.

Just to check but have you actually played monster hunter and not just toukiden/god eater? Bearing in mind that world is a different series and both 4/XX fuck with the formula a lot. It's a fun game because the combat is well balanced and it's about the only game with the particular dynamic of slow combat against an enemy with priority over the player in almost all instances. Monster hunter designs were good in gen 1 and solid up to gen 3 but they were good as super-real (super as in exaggerated or greater than not as an emphatic) natural looking creatures and not as over-designed crazy things which I think is closer to what the thread is aimed at. Anyway kaneko is the only good enemy designer for monstrous things without going either full blown 13 year old scribble monsters with spikes on every surface or tame stuff that isn't really that monstrous. George Kamitani also does good stuff, but it's really more in line of great execution of classical monster concepts than anything particularly bizarre. His approach to chimera in GrimGrimoire was somewhat unique, being a kind of buer spin-off.

Played 4 different monster hunters and found them all to be clunky. Played the original PS2 one when it came out for a few hours, tried on the PSP, WiiU and The latest one. Latest was mildly better but still too damn clunky and too grindy.

Okay well thanks for letting us know that you're a brain-dead shitter. You don't need to double break unless seperating post responses or an actual paragraph. Reminder that a paragraph typically constitutes more than a single fucking line. For reference I'm calling you a retard for calling the game clunky as your only response, rather than just saying slow. If you hate slow games that's fine but don't blame it on grind or you might as well blame just about any game out there that requires you to do anything other than move forward.

Oh yeah I missed this the first time I read this post but by 'latest one' do you mean world? Inoperable case of garbage fucking tastes, hate monster hunter all you want, but under no circumstances should a reasonable human being like world or prefer it to classic even if it just means to dislike it slightly less. Might as well start telling us about how skyrim and DmC are some of your favorite games and Dante's white hair was lame.

Disregarding OP being a faggot.

Castlevania always had amazing enemy design, from common enemies to specially bosses.

1ac505  No.16690872

>>16690823

It's clunky not slow. Having to stop to sharpen your weapons in the middle of a fight isn't slow, it's clunky. Having huge sprawling towns when you only need to visit like 4 places is just padding and the level design is piss poor so a new player will often end up lost (common problem with modern RPGs as well).

Having very few combat options making Dark souls look varied. Having 10 different ways to swing and oversized mace with no way to cancel out of it and stupidly long animations isn't slow, it's clunky. The game never grew out of the PS2 era, it stayed in that shit shit hole. It's like DMC3 never happened so you're stuck with DMC1 forever.

>Don't point out the grind is bad because other games have grinding

I don't care what others games do, I only care what this game does. It has a pointless grind where they make you need to level up stats to fight recolours and grind some more. It's locking other wise possibly interesting content (not for me) behind a skinner box. You can make any excuses you want for it, but RNG and having to grind the same mission over and over is just lazy padding.

>>16690840

DmC had some strong points. It's visually very good and had some nice enemy designs.

I've been on imageboards for over a decade. I know how to properly format a post for them. Maybe you should learn to do the same. You could do it instead of grinding the same dragon for a week in Monster hunter.

>>16690829

SMT has some nice designs. Angel is one of my favourites.

>>16690859

Op is always a fag.

The bosses are pretty good in castlevania but most the mooks are generic rip offs of superior Western designs and mythology. Same shit as Goblin Slayer where weebs jerk off to the slant eyed version of their own mythology because they're too lazy to involve themselves in their own culture. And no jews didn't burn all the books and gook cartoons made for children are not superior

The art style was gorgeous, it's too short and doesn't make the most of it's mechanics. Could do with a proper sequel with a larger budget to pull off what it wanted to achieve but clearly didn't have the budget for.

Bloodborne has amazing monster designs, but the bosses sometimes fall flat. The good ones are 10/10 though.

Killer7 has Heaven Smiles, and the only reason I think they're good is that they're a variation of the same face with a ton of different types of bodies which slowly descend into more and more insanity.

Depends on if you're talking about visual variety or behavior variety. Visually it's probably DMC1 that casts the widest net, since it takes its enemy concepts from a wide range of mythologies, and DMC3 is the most narrow, since so much of the enemy roster is dominated by the Army of Seven Hells and the Damned Chessmen. DMC5's roster is great, obviously, and has the advantage of borrowing from the previous games, but I'd still hand it to 1.

For behavior variety and complexity, it would go to Bayonetta 1 or The Wonderful 101. Normal enemies in those games would be a miniboss in any other game.

1ac505  No.16691652

>>16691623

I hated the DMC5 enemy list. It was way too much nostalgia bait and the new stuff was just tanky as shit designed to force you to back off. It's a real shame they went Dark souls 3 with it. It's my only real complaint.

415826  No.16691686

>>16691652

>the new stuff was just tanky as shit designed to force you to back off

The Proto Angelos, Hell Antenoras, and Behemoths, sure, I didn't feel that way about the Baphomets, Lusachias, or Empusa enemy set at all. Or the Riots and Chaoses, if you could count those as technically not the same as Blades or Assaults.

1ac505  No.16691710

>>16691686

I don't count Empusas as enemies TBH, they're so passive and die so easy. But DMC5 does suffer that, everything is tanky as fuck or a joke. It lacks a good middle ground.

415826  No.16691763

How would you qualify something in DMC5 as "tanky" compared to enemies in DMC1 or 3 that have activated Devil Trigger, which have massive health pools and are difficult to juggle or stunlock?

1ac505  No.16691788

>>16691763

The butchers have just enough HP for their berserk to fuck you over. The knights blocking shit.

I'm not talking DMD devil trigger here because that's expected. Even on normal some of the enemies were just designed to be brick walls to your combo meter unless you DTed to blitz the entire room. I had the same issue with Bayonetta 2 where some enemies are just designed to break up the flow. I don't mind that in a top tier enemy (like Shadows) but I do mind when they throw in a handful of butchers. No bodies also suffer from being exceptionally difficult to stun lock and I didn't get the same feedback on them as them in previous games.

It may just be me but I thought the game was often balanced around having two DTs and I didn't like that. I reserve my DT for emergency situations or complete cluster fucks. I don't like how powerful it is in 5 or how You could just sin DT and kill a boss on hard without having to do anything but mash attack.

I really enjoyed 5, it's a nice return to form after DmC but it sits awkwardly between casual and hardcore and doesn't commit to either enough. But then it's the first DMC to get finished so maybe I should applaud that at least. Every other games shit it's self near the end or put in a boss rush in a desperate attempt to extend it's self a few hours Fuck the dice games in DMC4, and fuck everything in DMC4 that isn't the combat or enemies

Yes, and Shadow Hearts had some great enemy designs too even though they feel somewhat out of place as the series went less horror and more goofy.
