There are plenty of mahjong games in minigames for some Japanese titles like Yakuza or that one indieshit game with the mahjong mini game called Freedom Planet. Hell there are mahjong games on the internet. Alternativel, you could fly to china and beg Zhang to let you play mahjong

I've not played many of the solitaire variety, but a childhood favourite was HKMJ which, I can't speak for its AI quality but it at least has most of the finer rules in place such as the special hands, and scoring/gambling. Also you had a choice of playable cast with some enforcing different rules, one makes you flip tiles over on discarding, and one adds some particularly nasty penalties for making stupid moves on top of a two-point minimum hand value and a forced payout for falsely declaring a win. It's also interesting for being from the era of code cards, we just had a print-out of them but it's whichever tile is on page x in the manual, PDF related.
Also can someone post the 5-9 characters tiles in a scrambled order? I want to test my memory. 1-3 are just a number of horizontal strokes while 4 is the box-cage thing.

Also what's a good place to pirate android apps? I used aptoide in the past but it has turned to shit, F-Droid is decent but it's often missing what I'm looking for (at least when it comes to games).

The first solitaire mahjong game I ever played and still one of my favorites (probably partially due to being my first, and nostalgia goggles), is Mah Jongg for Windows. It's a Windows 3.1 game that sadly can only be played on modern 64-bit Windows through emulation. It came in one of those cd-roms with hundreds of shareware games that I bought as a kid.
There's a browser playable Dosbox version on Internet Archive but it's not the same experience, since mouse movement feels laggy and sluggish, and resolution scaling is complete trash:

Another one of my favorites is Random Factor Mahjong, which is a mobile game for Android and iOS (looks like a Windows version exists but I can't find it anywhere, it's not on Steam or any other online storefront). It has beautiful looking sets and the best tile shuffling algorithm I ever encountered, challenging but fair. It's one of my most played games on mobile. It's demo/shareware but you can find cracked .apks with the full registered version if you search a bit.

Tenhou online. It's the Japanese ruleset where you actually put away the tiles in order, so the game can be read unlike Hong Kong rules. Though once you get high level, a single loss will completely fuck you over, so most of my mates just make new accounts to climb back up into the good ranks since that easier compared to clawing your way back up.
Though since you can't cheat, half the game is kind of lost, even discounting some of the "just one hand on the table"-rules most parlours run with. Some of the mahjong cheating tricks are pretty insane.

In particular, the "backup grill" he pulls out in the webm is a torture device they use to force people to do a dogeza on. it's not too hard. you do know the rules, right?
>build hand (4 sets and 1 pair unless you go for chiitoitsu (7 pairs) or kokushimusou (13 orphans))
>remember you need at least 1 yaku (pattern or condition) to delcare a win. you can win on any closed hand as that's a yaku by itself.
if you have an open hand (made tile calls) the easiest yaku is yakuhai (dragon, round wind, or seat wind triplet). otherwise look into toitoi (all triplets) and tanyao (hand comprises non-terminal (2-8) numbered tiles; assuming kuitan rule is in effect).
Here are some basic tips.
Look at recent discards to determine what's safe to discard. for example, if you see someone discard an honor tile you also have, it's an almost guaranteed safe discard.
Pay attention to the dora indicator(s). taking advantage of dora is a great way to increase the value of your hand.
Avoid discarding someone's winning tile; you'll pay the entire value of their hand! Pay attention to that person's discards, open melds (if any). If that person called riichi, any tile they discard from that point onward is safe (against that person).
Be careful about furiten (passing up a chance to declare a win). if you're furiten you can't win on someone's discard (ron); you'll only be able to win by self-draw (tsumo).
