e8fea2  No.16681794

Finished Xenoblade 2 recently. The story sucked, especially in the middle. There's lots of side content which varies in a good way, but it's all a waste of time. I don't think I'll come back to replay or for completion, but I'll play the standalone expansion whenever I get to it.

Not sure which JRPG to play between now and DQ XI S release, need a shorter one. Any recommendations? I've already played every big series (FF, DQ, SMT, etc)

>>16681774

One of the last good ones. Play 4 Heroes of Light on DS for more good FFV vibes. The Bravely games are a spiritual successor to 4HOL, and Octopath is a successor to Bravely.

>>16681790

You should emulate all of them, up through XII. XIII and XV have good enough PC ports.

I finished Legends of Colesteel recently and it kicked the wind out of my sails for the Legend of Heroes game. I just didn't particularly enjoy it as much as I did FC or Zero which means I don't really want to bother with Colesteel 2, not to mention I'm sick of sitting through incredibly long games with mediocre to shit gameplay, especially when you consider who the dev is and what else they have done.

I'm forcing myself to continue Octopath Traveler right now.

The music, the world- and character-designs and combat are genuinely good, but from the 8 characters so far I only care about Cyrus and Primrose.

I want to finally get to the part where you can reclass your characters to make broken combinations like in Bravely Default, but I heard you cannot do that until you finished chapter 4 for ALL the characters, which lowered my motivation considerably.

Other than that I 100% Moero Chronicles on Switch recently in less than 30 hours, which for a JRPG is pathetic.

It's a below average dungeon crawler, some of the girls are cute, but Joseph Joestar as a perverted seal completely steals the show, wish he would have more scenes instead of the worst MC I had the displeasure playing as.

The rubbing-mechanic is pretty fun though, but it gets also very frustrating in the later stages where you get less time to make the girls climax. I just wish the girls would be more "animate" when you grope them, like in Criminal Girls.

They also kinda fucked up the Switch port in that regard, in the Vita-version the portrait of the girls would flip vertically so you could cover more ground during the rubbing mode, but in the Switch version they stay horizontally which means you have to scroll down if you want to cover her whole body.

Thinking of continuing Dungeon Travelers 2, though my Vita is starting to crash more and more often.

On the whole JRPGs feel like a chore right now.

I have an issue similar to this. I sometimes pop in a game and play it but I never finish it. I just drop the game for a few weeks and when I go back to it I don't remember the objective/story. Depending on the game I was playing I end up forgetting the mechanics of the game too. I then restart the game from scratch and the cycle repeats itself.

Evenicle: The Joseph Smith Fantasy Adventure

Basically, you play as the mortal incarnation of horniness in a world where promiscuity outside of marriage is punished by the gods - but if you're a knight in service to the gods, you can have multiple wives. So you're trying to become knight in order to fuck every girl you come across and make them your wife.

It's drawn by the guy who does the designs for Senran Kagura, was developed with only a fraction of the budget that even the low-shelf Senran games get. Not bad for what it is, but all it is a thin excuse to fuck your way through a not-Senran harem.

Just about finished with my first playthough of Atelier Meruru. I'm playing the series in Japanese for practice, Meruru has been a lot harder than the previous games, probably because they use a lot more formal and psuedo-formal language what with Meruru being a princess and all. Sure. I'm only 4 dungeons in though and I'm pretty sure I've barely scraped the surface of it, so keep that in mind.

I also only played the PSP version so I have no clue how different the Steam release is.

You lead a party of 4 main characters + supports that let you cast more spells but don't participate directly.

There are 4 roles to choose from and while any character can perform any role the spells will be different, so you can try to make some interesting combinations.

Characters level up in 3 different ways: the regular character levels, class levels and sacred treasure stat bonuses.

The first two you get just by fighting, the last by gathering materials after battles and paying money.

This, coupled with elemental bonuses and resistances that bosses get (thus forcing you to craft resistance gear) makes the game a bit grindy. The battles are thankfully very short and most animations can be skipped if you just want to get your levels up.

There is a lot of fanservice and semi-lewd content, so if you're into that you'll have a great time.

The story has been "whatever" - tier so far, but all I wanted was to practice nip and stare at girls in skimpy clothing and that's exactly what I got.

Overall, I like it, I've just been busy playing a mod for Medieval 2, so that's why I put a pause on it.

I just started Ar Tonelico 2 with the Restoration patch. Can't say much for the plot yet but it looks like there's a witch hunt for "infected" girls who go on murder rampages when they become too corrupted. Meanwhile the people are raging war against god for gatekeeping them from the promise land.

Gameplay is somewhat similar to Valkyrie Profile battles in the sense that you take turns beating each other up in real time. You have 2 melee units and 2 mages. Attacking with the melee units charges up the spells of the mages and then they proceed to nuke the enemy or do various other things. It depends on how you attack. On the enemy turn you have to defend the mages with a Paper Mario defense system. If you fuck up, the mages lose their focus and can't cast spells. This means defending badly means that you can't even heal yourself. On hard mode, enemies have many multi hitting attacks or attacks with odd rhythms. Of course, the mages are cute girls except your flat imouto who's a melee unit.

I've started multiple JRPGs in my backlog, but no matter how long I play or force myself to play them, I end up dropping them. Maybe it's due to playing so many when I was younger, but they all start to look, feel, and even play the same, both in terms of story and gameplay. The challenge and the feeling of accomplishment defeating a boss, getting an item, or beating the game doesn't happen anymore when I play these games. I'll enjoy a unique concept of a game, but as I play through it, it starts feeling more like a chore to play the game rather than a challenge (as others have mentioned), with some games worse than others when it comes to the grind and chore-like gameplay (Bravely Default comes to mind, and I'm also saying this as someone who enjoys Monster Hunter). The challenge comes from a war of attrition, where you try to have bigger numbers and better gear than the enemies, and you're only grinding to either make the boss fights less tedious, or to get a specific item, spell, or weapon that will make the game a breeze. I can enjoy the music and the scenery of these games, but it starts to lose it's luster when you have to deal with the boring gameplay. All that said, I still enjoy playing TRPGs, and I've been thinking of playing pic related

I've beaten a few these past couple of months, and I'm not sure what to play next. I don't like to play sequels back-to-back because I'll burn out. So far I've beaten:

>Final Fantasy IX

I liked it, but I didn't really feel the urge to explore the world much, and the game was pretty easy. The only boss that took more than one try was the final one.

Best girl: Eiko

>Tales of Zesteria

I enjoyed everything about this game except the awful gear upgrade system and absolute clusterfuck of combat stats shoved into it.

Best girl: Edna

>Trails in the Sky First Chapter

Loved everything about it except the final boss taking nearly an hour because Falcom decided to give him fuck huge amounts of HP.

Best girl: Schera

>Trails in the Sky Second Chapter

Everything I disliked about FC was fixed in this and the story had me hooked the entire time. Took twice as long to beat than FC, but never felt slow or boring.

Best girl: Josette

I'm thinking about starting another "Tales of" game, Ni no Kuni on the ps3, or Xenoblade Chronicles 2. I'm also slowly going through the 3ds version of DQ VII when I feel like using a handheld. Any recommendations?

The 3DS removes random encounters (which the entire fucking game is balanced around) in favor of on-map monsters (read: braindead retards that you have to go out of your way to engage). I don't know why a true JRPG fan would tell you to play the casualized version, but this needs to fucking stop.

afec71  No.16683059

Ni No Kuni 1 is excellent and I'd heartily recommend it to everyone, it has the universal appeal of Ghibli and Pokemon but without watering down depth. It's a true modern JRPG, takes inspiration from all over and has countless little mechanics which all fit together neatly somehow. The story is really fun, too, feels like a true childhood adventure.

XC2 drags its feet and has Star Wars prequel writing crossed with anime tropes. This can be great, but it can also be terrible. The gameplay takes a while to be interesting, just treat blade affinity charts like objectives that are not required (but might as well be). Chatter during battle and on field is not subbed and is fairly important, so I played with the dub. Some of the dubbed characters sound fantastic but others make me want to die.

The only Tales Of games I've played are Symphonia (very good) and Abyss (not as good), and I last played them a while ago. I'd like to explore the series more myself.

>>16683043

If they rebalanced, would it still be ok? Because the series has map monsters since IX, and the DQ remakes tend to backport new features/graphics to the old game (I'm disappointed they remade VIII on 3DS, a system less powerful than the original)

I don't see the problem. If you avoid encounters you end up underleveled and make the game harder. If you go out of your way to fight everything you've probably walked the equivalent distance to get that many random encounters, so grinding is functionally unchanged. Map encounters just means you get to choose your difficulty level instead of being forced to normal or easy mode.

Sorry then, 12 posts. I wish you would have told me more about some JRPGs you like instead of shit flinging over a 3ds game. The 3ds has almost no good options in terms of JRPGs and has a pretty sad library as it is. Even homebrewed I regret not just saving for a Vita. I prefer random encounters in JRPGs, but they get annoying when you 1 hit everything in an area and just want to get to the next area. The anon stating that avoiding encounters can make the game much more challenging is right, as well. Removing random encounters removes the risk of losing resources while traveling to the next area and by that can be seen as casualization, but if you purposely underlevel it has the opposite effect in boss battles.

They set boundaries, you unimaginably stupid fuck. Random doesn't mean "LOL WHENEVER I FEEL LIKE." They use random numbers to balance the challenge. I understand this is difficult to understand if you have double digit IQ.

>Also, there is a flee mechanic that gives the player the option to run from random encounters.

Usually a flee mechanic only fails because you are too low level or your speed stat or whatever is too low (same thing really). Ultimately the limitation only exists as a form of forced handholding. c5a380  No.16683335

It's not circular, everything is just designed deliberately around the same goal. The developers want you to level up a certain minimum amount because that's how they've designed the difficulty curve. They don't want to give you the ability to make the game too hard for yourself because otherwise they might lose the casual audience who complains the game is "too hard". Random encounters are the mechanic by which they control player leveling while making the player feel like they have some kind of say in the matter (as opposed to just handing out experience for bosses and main quest completion). Random encounters are NEVER designed to add difficulty to the game. They only exist to REMOVE difficulty or add padding.

I started Berseria instead, with nothing better to do on my weekend, and I'm loving it so far, it is very good. I've played two other Tales games (Xillia and Xillia 2) and didn't care for them quite as much as I'd liked, but this one has me absorbed in the same manner that the Suikoden games did, so overall, this weekend turned out to be a success.

I've got a bad habit of getting all the way up to the final boss/boss area and then just losing interest. A good chunk of that is due to how poorly balanced these games generally are - being boring cake walks all the way up to last 1/5th of the game where they suddenly decide to crank up the difficulty or make it hard to progress without doing a ton of prepwork they should have been easing you into all along - but you never had to because spamming Attack and Heal was usually the most viable strategy. Modern Square games especially seem to have this issue, with the extra shit-sandwich of having a ton of mandatory post-game grinding shit you need to do in order to get the "real" ending or some extra little bit of infos that's supposed to clear up loose ends in the main story - but only end up leaving you more confused.

I'm starting today FF8,as I'm playing every FF back to back.

Don't know what to expect, but I'm going to post my controversial opinions.

While I don't think that 2 is a good game,I find it not absolutely terrible, after all it created most of the staples of the series, like chocobos, usual plot points and magic like Ultima

3 is extremely underrated, too many people play with the job system thinking it's like 5 but it's really its own thing, working more like a puzzle where you try to find what classes you should have to beat a dungeon. Fuck Ahriman and those dungeons where you're forced to be mini though

4 is great. I played the japanese SNES version and you can see why it was so groundbreaking. Cecil a best,Kain is cool and the plot, while often going full retarded, still is nice to follow. But one important thing is that it uses ATB A LOT better than 6/7. There are bosses where you have to use its quirks to beat them, one of the best examples is Plague Horror. It casts doom on all your party members,so you have 10 seconds to beat it. But what you have to do is abusing the fact that attack animations stop the time flow,so you have to use in a clever way long animations and spells. I loved it and one of the biggest gameplay downgrades from 4/5 to 6/7 is the loss of ways to stop the enemy ATB bars without the spell.

5 is amazing. Fun,lighthearted but it still has its emotional moments like Galuf's death and about everything about Krile. Obviously the gameplay is peak FF and the job system is fun as fuck. The music is actually better than what I thought,Exdeath's first phase has my favourite final boss theme in the series now. Oh,and about Exdeath. He's a great villain. Stupid as fuck motivations but for once he actually feels EVIL and makes you feel his presence a lot.

6 is great but overrated in more than one way. Plot is ok,but where it really shines are the characters. Problem is,the cast is way too big to develop them all. Gau is just there,Setzer is underused,Strago never exists. But the main ones are amazing, and there are some 10/10 moments like the Edgar and Sabin reunion at Figaro in the World of Ruin,Celes' suicide,Shadow's flashbacks and Cyan's everything. So the writing is great and the music so far is the best I've heard in a FF. But the problem here is the gameplay. It's broken. Evasion is null, bugs are plenty and while there are a lot of characters, which is a good thing because you can use what you like from a gimmick standpoint, sadly some are really bad. And the Espers, while interesting in the concept, are lacking in the execution. It's way too easy to make two characters virtually the same, and by the end everyone just becomes an Ultima powerhouse (except Umaro, who I used up to the end and was actually better than what I expected). Another problem are the bosses themselves. Unlike 4 and 5,they weren't created with the ATB in mind. Their gimmicks are extremely generic, usually they are the equivalent of a stronger enemy, and so absolutely no tactic is involved. The few bosses who actually use the ATB as a mechanic are just recycled ideas from past games, but without the stopping thing and a lot weaker. I could defeat the Portrait boss just by beating the shit out of it without waiting nor doing anything in particular. So yeah,I feel like this is the point where FF started to be writing over gameplay. It's still great, but I feel the downgrade in many ways. At least the World of Ruin is an amazing idea, leaving the player absolute freedom. Oh and Kefka was pretty good, not a deep villain at all but I often prefer them this way.

d128d3  No.16686582

>>16686580

(continued)

Like 6,7 felt once again style over substance. The writing is once again great, and I actually prefer 7's cast to 6's because it's more compact and developed, even Cait Sith has a lot going for it. Cloud's identity actually was an interesting plot point,I like uncovering it piece by piece and I didn't find confusing as many people say. You've just got to pay attention. Sephiroth is again a good villain,I expected him to be simply an edgelord but actually he was a crazy motherfucker. Fuck modern Square for ruining him,I enjoyed his rants about J.E.N.O.V.A. and ancients. I think that what really helped the writing here was the possibility to add a lot more dialogues to the game. But the gameplay again is a big problem. It's even more dumbed down than 6. Having only 3 characters (yeah I know technical limitations and shit) lowers the possible combinations you could do with your party. No more fun crazy bullshit like 6 (My main team was Umaro,Mog,Terra and Gau),everybody seems to be a physical attacker. And this is another problem, while the characters are different in their personalities, they don't feel like that in the gameplay. They're all pretty much the same, and Materia only makes this issue even bigger. While I liked the idea of having total freedom on how you wanted to build your party,it cancelled every possibility of making unique gimmicks like 6,no more Umaros or Gaus,no unique things like Runic or Tools, nothing at all interesting. The battles felt more like an obligation to advance the plot. Once again the difficulty is null,no strategies are involved, even Sephiroth is a pushover (I used Cloud,Red XIII and Yuffie, and holy shit Yuffie's ultimate weapon is way too broken considering how easy is to get it). Limit Breaks aren't that interesting either, because they mostly boil down to "stronger attack". Minigames were good, fuck chocobos though. I breeded a gold one and I don't think I want to race ever again. So like 6 presentation is stellar, plot is great but gameplay is eh,maybe even more in this case

So all in all I would say 5>4>6=7>3>1>2

Though that was my personal impression,I think that more objectively it would be 5>6>=7>4>3>1>2

Which do you prefer between 6 and 7 is a matter of taste honestly, they felt similar in their "plot over gameplay" shtick, but 6's gameplay is better than 7 in my opinion.

Started playing Tales of Vesperia.

The combat is absolute shit in this game. I don't know how people stand it.

Is it supposed to be a bum-rush simulator where you just gang-up and stun-lock enemies to prevent them from doing the same to you?

And what's with the stupid super armour that allows enemies to attack through your strikes but if they deal a glancing blow to you your combo automatically stops?

I guess I expected something more like a fighting game and I got an even worse Smash Bros instead.

The dog is cool though. More games should let you have a dog companion. RedXIII was a bro too. He and Tifa were my main companions.

Suggest RPGs with dog party members.

0ad1c1  No.16698574

>>16698550

Tales combat is shit. The fanboys pretend otherwise because once you unlock all the combat additions that should be default, you can made combo videos where you stunlock a boss and use muh hi-ougis (basically super moves that weeaboos insist on using that term for, and I mean proper weeaboos not the diluted term that is used today) to nuke them. Most of the first playthrough is essentially one very long tutorial, and the game properly starts in NG+ as you finally have all your combat options.

Something that the game never tells you is that you can cancel the retardedly long animation lock on many attacks by holding forward, block and free run at the same time. Yes, it's fucking retarded, and the combat would have been infinitely better if they just didn't fucking have that absurd animation lock.

Let's not forget that the game is a 2D combat system in a 3D game. Enemies run around on a 3D plane the entire time, and they'll frequently stagger away from your reach mid-combo if you aren't positioned 100% perfectly right. Meanwhile, you're stuck on a 2D plane unless you hold the free running button, during which you can only use the horrible and extremely slow run attack, and stopping has a stupid fucking slow stopping animation. Anything that the AI controls can traverse the 3D plane just fine, but the dumbasses that made the game made it so that they player is horribly handicapped if they try to do anything but run straight at the enemy.

And yeah, there's a long locked stagger animation if you get hit by anything. You get ways to mitigate it later by making certain gear and grinding with it. Still doesn't change how absolutely awful the entire combat system is when enemies will just move around you as you're locked to your 2D plane and lightly caress you as you're trying to pull off any attacks.

>but dude you can make combo videos on stunlocked bosses in NG+!

If MMOs count, FFXIV because I'm a filthy addict. Shadowbringers is ok, but I'm taking a break from progressing through the actual story since I'm getting tired of healing and need to level another class to near max to continue.

Barring that, I did just start Persona Q2 the other day. Not bad for a game I tracked down specifically for one girl, Minako

Legend of Heroes: Song of the Ocean on the PSP. Be warned though, parts of the story won't make sense or seem incomplete if you haven't played Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch and Tear of Vermilion first. Be warned though, the translations are terrible and they were released out of order in the west but otherwise they can be enjoyable. Again, if you want to play them, make sure you play them in this order.

Legend of Heroes II: Prophecy of the Moonlight Witch > Legend of Heroes: Tear of Vermilion > Legend of Heroes III: Song of the Ocean.

Because it's portable, adds fucking Morrie as a party member and apparently even has an ending where you fuck Jessica instead of Medea if you completed the Dragovian post game. What turned me off originally was hearing it was censored, but then Super High Tension not even getting the Super Saiyan was the dealbreaker.

I thought all those monsters on the map were just guaranteed encounters that make the world feel more alive, not fucking removing random battles entirely.

I've been playing with my modded PS1 lately and the moment I tested out FF9 I felt an intense urge to replay it. Haven't been disappointed yet, everything about this game just sucks you in. For me it's been 11 years since I played it and a ton has changed in my life, I'm basically a different person. FF9 is such an emotionally charged and character heavy game, the little things each character does in a cutscene or the remarks they might say really are the tiny details of love that push a game into something great.

Also, the combat isn't even that slow when you set the speed to max. Also Fossil Roo sucks. What's your thoughts on FF9?
