I keep hearing this argument, and it's tough to believe that actual people can regurgitate it with a straight face. For all of June, any anon unlucky enough to be in a Western city (I dare say in the West period) will have seen the following:
Damn near every mainstream program/app had a rainbow logo; hell, every company that could incorporate a rainbow/use those colors did so for their logo. Every ad jerked off the notion of what they're selling being for everybody regardless of what they stick where. Every john/jane doe model for a product or service just had to be labeled with pronouns or announced as gay or trans or whatever – as if the product is better or worse because of it.
Every politician, celebrity, news station, influencer, etc. paraded (heh) their undying belief and defense of "love between everybody." If it's not outright illegal in your country to disagree with this messaging, then it's at the very least a widescale taboo, and you can almost certainly kiss your job and social status goodbye if you make the wrong comment in the wrong place. Shirts, balloons, pastries, any and all packaging (consumer, commercial or otherwise) are stamped with rainbows or loyal messages. At least that I can understand. If I could charge $30 for a rainbow t-shirt, why wouldn't I? But it's just everywhere.
Parades are non-stop, shutting down streets and weekend plans – especially during "pride week," the last week of pride month; because naturally they need a special week in their special month. Their flags are hung from the tops of corporate and government buildings and skyscrapers are lit up in their colors, all as if we lost a war. But after all of that, one of the favored talking points of those in support is that this is a private issue – a bedroom matter – and it doesn't affect the general public in any way.
It's the dishonesty that gets me. Let's forget about their impact on collective moral decency or public image for just a moment. The idea that in CY+4 gays are positioned as some fringe, persecuted class who look over their shoulders every day on their secret back-alley metal gear solid missions to the bathhouse – rather than as the elevated class of overbearing hedonists that they are – is nothing short of a taunt.
