It wasn't my first Arcsystem works fighting game, Guilty Gear popped that cherry on the PS2. I'd played fighting games like Tekken, Soul Caliber, Super smash bros, and fed quarters into whatever would be at any arcade I found myself in but I'd be lying if seeing my friend boot up CT on his 360 wasn't a completely new kind of excitement. Mained Arakune because of how broken he used to be and how mash friendly he felt. Also a crazy masked character worked well for me since I mained Faust in GG. Didn't play much else of CT after maybe a month of it. However, I played a lot more BB when I made it to college with people who were much better at it than I was. And I wound up falling in love with Relius when he got released.
It's a solid series in my eyes with a terrible story and perhaps too many system mechanics for me to mentally keep up with at this point. I own the last version which was the first and only time I actually paid for the game.

Got CT when it first came out (since I missed out on GG and was primarily playing 3d fighting games at the time). Had a lot of fun and frustration learning the game and playing online since I didn't have anyone else that played it and/or wasn't interested in fighting games. I would stick with it until CP when I was getting tired of the drastic changes to the gameplay and characters for balance (as well as the story going full retard and forcing you to keep up with all the non-FG related crap to even have an idea what the fuck is going on). I gave CF a try, but didn't stick with it that long since I was able to get Xrd by the time it came out. During my time playing the series, I mained and played Ragna, but CF motivated me to try out Nagato (still have a functioning thumb and controller after that). It had something going for it, but in the end never lived up to what it could be. That being said, It did help me get better at 2D fighting games, and I do miss the days of CT's glitches of 2 Ragnas Inferno Dividing up the screen infinitely, disappearing until someone fucked up the command.

Yes, in truth, protracted development times are fairly common when it comes to indie game development. No one really talks about how long Ahad was trying to make Skullgirls into a game (was nearly a decade by the time he was introduced to Mike Z).
There are multiple examples of games that have all suffered this. A&CP, Barkley 2, Yandere Sim, Cryamore, and a whole bunch of other fighting games like Blazing Strike and Diepod's fighter. The difference is I haven't taken anyone's money for my game, at least, not yet.
I just need some more time.
When it's all said and done this'll be special, I promise.

So are you working on a training mode? Your first post are talking about how you don't have any programmers so I'm getting the impression that you aren't working on even a training mode, stages, characters, etc. On top of that you have shown that you are not making the music either and are outsourcing that so what impression are we being given on what you are working on? I actually do have experience doing game development and as a actual programmer it frustrates me to see the more artistically minded types just spin their own wheel talking about their ideas. Had a project tank 3 or 4 years ago because all everyone else wanted to do is change the design every other week and argue about what the main character should look like. Now game development isn't my job and it's barely a hobby but I still hold people to the standard that deadlines must be set and met.
I have no sympathy for people in Josh's position because a number of his development hangups are his own fault and things he could have learned to overcome if he put in the work are simply pushed aside. And comparing designing a functional engine from scratch to building a fighting game in someone else's engine that's ready made and fully featured is disingenuous to say the least. He needs to put up or shut up.

We're making the game in Unreal Engine 4. If you really knew about game development you'd know that the engine is basically just a renderer, and we still need to make entirely original code and graphics assets which naturally takes time.
Working with a paid team is different than working with anons on some little unity project. There's invoices to pay and contracts to sign. There's licenses for stuff like GGPO2 that I'm planning to implement in the future that costs $1000 just for the licensing fee let alone the implementation.

No, I walked away from that shitshow and didn't bother to keep anything I'd put together for it. It was supposed to be a top down shooter with similarities to Touhou hence the obsession over the main characters design and all I'd managed to get done was basically a rudimentary play area with a scrolling background and simple UI. The problem hasn't been a lack of a programmer, it's mostly just been budgetary. And we had to restart development at one point due to an issure with the skeleton rigs. But now it's just budget concerns.
However I have really talented people working on it now so it's just a matter of time. We're making way more progress now than I would've been able to do on my own.
And the thing is I do know how to program a little bit but just my skills alone would be insufficient for a game like this even if I were a pro. But I have it covered. Just be patient.

I'd look into the Queen's Blade game books, themselves based on the Lost World's gamebook series from like the 80s. Which is a funny story in and of itself because the original guy who made it didn't realize Japan had made a softcore porn variant of his gamebooks that eventually became a big deal with an anime release and some video games. When he and his daughter found out they just asked for royalties and now plug the japanese games themselves which is cool.
It's a style of game where each character is a book the player purchases containing a character sheet and the book itself explaining how moves break down and giving . Two people compete by exchanging books and then choosing actions from their respective character sheets and then comparing results by consulting the game books to see how their stats match up via tables. There are images in the book for each action to give a visual reference for what is going on, obviously the japanese versions are more lewd in their depictions.
It's at least an idea of how to break down combat into more than just RPS actions as there is more variety and variables. And over the years the japanese developers have adapted a number of fighting game women. If you made it fully digital you could avoid the need for table consulting by the players and just leave them with a timer to choose their action and then once it's reached the results are compared.

New characters are also godawful - Yashamaru looks like he came from BB, Darli from a late SC and those weapon shape switch animations look terrible, Wu admittedly has the Velma thing which is cute but that's it and the final boss is a PMS'ing ghost with nothing going for it besides the transparent naked body visual gimmick.
As for Maxima, I'd argue he was already screwed with XII-XIII when they changed his move set to very plain "cyborg-y" moves.

I have not been working on this since 2009. Yes in 2007 I had the characters but they were for something else. I've known Yilx (my artist) way before then and we didn't even plan on making a fighting game until around 2011 but even then it was just theorizing like "what if we did this". Actual attempts to get the game made didn't start until around 2014.

I'm talking about a year ago when SS7 wasn't even released yet, when the Discord server was the only way to find games for V Special consistently. Ever since around the time 7's second trailer dropped there's been an influx of new V Special players, including a bunch of furries and other degenerate faggot losers who were using the game as 'practise' for 7 with their cool Day -35 Ukyo tech or whatever DUDE BACKDASH TSUBAME LMAO. Ever since 7 dropped the Discord's gotten really out of hand with its faggotry, which is why I've effectively stopped using it.
It's sad to see a legitimately good fighting game get raped by these poseurs. I've had a hunch for the longest time that these people don't actually enjoy the game, but are using it and the attention it has received to find a new subculture for themselves to belong. Only like half the people who pretended to enjoy V Special haven't moved on to 7, and that's only because the game's not out on PC yet. It's a shame that the Fightcade lobby for V Special has effectively become the SS7 PC waiting room, because the game itself is a lot more interesting than 7 (which is still a fine game and a lot more refined, but rather repetitive and dumbed down) by virtue of having greater character variety, more movement options and fun tech like roll cancels.

My main in V Special is Tam Tam, though I started with Sogetsu. I've been playing Suija recently as well, who's a lot of trouble to work with but I like his gimmicks. I can play a bunch of other characters reasonably well, but not dependably.
I'm glad to see Tam Tam doing well in SS7 with his improved speed and normals and I'm doing alright in Ranked as a Tam Tam player, though the fact he's top tier and simple to use gives me the feeling I'm a fraud. However, I miss the high risk/reward nature of moves like his old command grab. His overly slow movement in V Special can go fuck itself, though.

Have you ever fought a Gaira player before? Roll cancelling is the only way to buffer his command grab (47896AB) on the ground reliably, and the distance it travels and its natural range make it a huge threat. RC into beads grab is one of the best things Gaira has in his kit.
Roll cancelling is common for any character with a command grab because it drastically improves their range. The threat of RC into command grab gives Genjuro and Basara yet another good offensive tool while further helping grapplers like Gedo make their way in.

I just labbed it against Charlotte's 5B and unless you're referring to when your character is already up close and able to cross over with a hop (which doesn't guarantee a good punish, given that ordinary medium slashes recover fairly quickly or can be whiff cancelled into stuff depending on the character) then her 5B catches characters hopping towards her from a distance. At mid-range, hops are only really reliable for dodging telegraphed lows like Mina's 2B. Trust me, people start forward hopping whenever they're close because they want to throw you. It's that simple.
I will give you that SS7 is much better at maintaining a mid-range game - that much is obvious. The real problem is that for most characters (Charlotte and Jubei being obvious exceptions) 5B isn't really that effective in V Special. I use Tam Tam's 5B a lot more in 7 than I have in V Special, and that's because characters don't have as many offensive options or tools for getting in as they did in V Special.

I've been playing for a little over a year by now on Fightcade - at least a few months before the first trailer for SS7, if you must know. I've fought against some of the Discord blokes you've mentioned quite a number of times.
In regards to the comment about B pokes, of course some characters have really important uses for them. Characters like Haohmaru, Sogetsu and Charlotte obviously get lots of mileage out of their B normals, but the same can't be said for a good portion of the cast. Tam Tam for instance gets a lot more mileage out of 5A for poking and his game is more revolved around his IOH jAB and mixing that up with his lows when he's up close.

I love seeing all these Street Fighter players come into SamSho thinking that they should be able to immediately pick it up just because it looks kinda similar, but supposedly easier because it lacks combos. I know Sirlin's famous for being anti-execution but the fact that he's crying about 421 motions which are literally just 623 motions on the other side just seems like he's being overwhelmed by a mental block more than anything else, given he didn't bitch about the classic overlap of fireball and DP motions, which is in this game.
The only overlap that is still a problem is that Nakoruru has all three of 214, 421 and 412 motions, which makes an already-weak character worse if your execution isn't sharp. That being said, the input reader in SS7 is a lot more accurate than in V Special, where that overlap was a big problem for her if you just wanted to use the cloth.

Which moon? From your post, I'm guessing you're new, in which case I'd recommend Full Moon/F-Aoko over her other moons. F-Moon is as simple and straightforward as Melty gets: you have good projectile, you have good normals, and you have access to F-Moon's good defensive mechanics.

F-Aoko has a reversal in her 623C spin kick. If you don't like what someone is doing to you, just throw it out make them respect you. There are also some universal system mechanics available to F-Moon, such as being able to hold EX guard (1D or 4D, makes your opponent's moves worse on block), and having a shield bunker (214D in blockstun, which is an invulnerable counterattack that knocks your opponent away and deals no damage).
I think there are one or two other things you can do (pseudo-parrying, HEAT activation), but it's been a while since I played Melty so you'd need to do some reading on the Mizuumi wiki or a diskike server for the full details.

I'm not seeing it. There have been some truly colossal flops like MK11 and DoA6 recently, but brand recognition has been enough to keep MK going all through X, to keep Injustice 2 going for years, and to keep SFV going despite all its numerous and highly visible disasters.

There was some discussion earlier in the thread. I don't have a soystation myself, but everyone in my local scene does and they've been playing it consistently. I've also watched a bit of footage.
Pros:
>it's still samsho: you're rewarded more for being defensive and smart than for being a gorilla
>the removal of many of VSP's more obtuse mechanics means the focus is squarely back on the footsies/deflect/dodge RPS interactions
>characters who were bad in earlier games (like TamTam) benefitted from not having almost every special move be ludicrously unsafe anymore
>visual flourishes like the issen's monochrome and the menus look beautiful
Cons:
<it has the same problems that SFIV's models did, in that they look uncanny when not in motion (look at a screenshot of Shiki, for instance; her proportions looks like a Final Fantasy IX character's)
<<a lot of the stages look truly ugly (such as the river in the mountain stage), and several characters have had details removed to compensate for SNK still not knowing how to into grayfix (Ukyo has a ponytail because it's easier to animate, Charlotte looks like one of muh animoo absolute territory girls, etc.)
<once you disarm an opponent, you can use the knockdown time to scroll his weapon off the stage and force him to come to you with nothing but a punch and a kick
<DP characters now have DPs with total invuln, which means well-rounded characters like Genjuro are so ludicrously good they're already becoming dominant and overrepresented in tournaments
<other characters like Shiki are close to unplayably bad - in her case, she has a rekka series that is punishable on hit
<virtually no single player content and a pretty poor tutorial, just like KoFXIV three years ago
<DLC already announced (although you got it for free if you bought the game during launch week, so at least they aren't jewing everyone)
I'd say it's a solid title with a potentially bright future depending on how long it takes SNK to fix bugs and whether or not EVO is Genjuro Mirrors: The Tournament.

It's okay. It's fairly simple, and the lack of fuckhuge combos means there's very little labtime needed to get started. There's a heavy emphasis on the neutral game and looking for patterns in your opponent's movements for your damage, which is why matches can fluctuate between staredowns and unga bunga. Moments like when you land a heavy slash (or better: a deflect) feel incredibly satisfying thanks to the feedback you get and the huge damage they can lead to. What really cements what the game is going for is when someone pops RE and there's so much pressure on you not to get hit by their Issen it's not funny - depending on the circumstances that shit can take off like 70% of your life bar, and if you jump you're basically screwed.
For a character roster of only sixteen so far, there's a fair amount of variety between them (as has always been the case). They removed some of the mechanics and movement options from V Special the lack of rolls outside of wakeup making flowchart Galfords a bitch to deal with but the characters take their movelists and options from that game, which was when they felt the most unique and actualised versions of themselves in the series. They've made a few changes, though, like some anti-airs gaining proper invincibility, Kyoshiro's frog now taking longer to come out and Tam Tam's command grab sacrificing its range for a bit less startup. That first change is important because, for whatever reason, the series has never had offensive options on wake-up before.
The balance is decent so far, though not as great as it was in V Special where even the bottom tiers like Enja had a proper chance. Characters like Yoshitora and Genjuro can go full gorilla mode against anyone who doesn't have a proper reversal or a good way to keep them out, while Kyoshiro and Shiki need a shitton of patience and work for their wins. Regardless, it's still a SamSho title, which means every character has a chance to deal a shit ton of damage, bringing everyone a little closer together.
The online right now sucks a fat one. The netcode is either really good or nearly unplayable depending on who you're fighting (good luck playing anyone from Europe if you're a burger), so you're basically restricted to fighting players from countries close to you. The lobbies are complete shit, too - only one match can be hosted at a time, and if you don't reserve a spectator spot before the challenger spots are gone, then enjoy staring at the lobby menu because you can't join in later. It sucks, it's finicky and I don't like it.
SamSho isn't a bad game at all - probably one the best entries in the series. Just expect to see a lot of Genjuro tryhards on Ranked. t. currently Sword Master rank with a fraud Tam Tam

As long as we're discussing music, I'll mention TFH's dynamic music system. The initial vision for the system would have used many changes in music and instrumentation depending on the state of the match: who's being comboed, what the state of the combo is, who's winning, whether it's the final round or not, etc. It was simplified during development so that there's a single theme based on the stage, and some of its instrumentation changes depending on who's currently winning and whether or not it's the final round. Once the combo decay meter maxes out, there's an "aero" effect applied to the audio. The characters' instruments also affect the melody on the character select screen.
Ultimately I like the idea because it's a novelty and because some of the combinations are really good, but it does meant the characters/stages somewhat lack individuality. There can also be some really poor fits, depending on your tastes: Paprika's instruments completely overwrite Arizona's theme, but Tianhuo's barely change it. Compare:

There's also the issue of the unused character themes which don't play anywhere in the game. Arizona's sounds really nice, but it's inexplicably absent, and there isn't a sound test option: https://www.invidio.us/watch?v=ChsA5ugwKLI. I also really enjoy Tianhuo's, which is embedded.
I'm looking forward to the headache they encounter when introducing the stretch goal Goat, since she'll necessitate a bunch of new music tracks: one for her stage, one for her (hopefully), six for playing on the other characters' stages, six final round versions of the previous six, and six new jingles for character select. It'll be great.

It's not limb-based combat, so not really. It's mostly a style choice: the characters bite and buck instead of punching and kicking. Velvet's a prissy girl so she flails with her hooves where a human character might wave a palm dismissively. That said, there are quite a lot of creative animations, so it's definitely been worth it. The characters are distinct from almost any other game I've seen.

Speaking of Them Fighting Herds, I wondered why nobody have reskined the characters from Friendship is Fighting. I'm guessing most chyaracters in TFH are just redone from Fighting is Magic so it should be fairly easy to implement the sprites, and even go an extra mile and enchance the FiF sprites to implement them in TFT as alternative skins or something.

I have the Mega links if you want to give it a shot yourself, but it was a hastily made game scraped together by one guy who now works as the community manager for Mane6 and organized a bunch of tournaments beforehand using half-complete code. It's a miracle it works at all, considering it has bugs like P2 not being able to input crouching attacks with 1 or 3. I'm not sure you can even access the game files properly; I think they're all obfuscated behind proprietary file types.

Imagine adding an entire character to skullgirls, imagine just replacing the entire move set of 1 character, you have to rebuild every single frame of animation for that character while also doing this multilayer palette thing and the multilayer dynamic lightning stuff, Kike Z says it would cost like $150000 in working hours, minus the hitboxes and the moveset we can lower the barrier at $90.000 per character, that doesn't sound "fairly easy", many developers are moving to 3D models because it's way more cheaper

I don't know if you get my point but GAN doesn't work properly in 2D, the closest thing you can do is "Tracing" over 3D models Kof13 style, that's is justifiable because the 3D models were featureless puppets to calculate angles faster, the 2D artists add 90% of the features and details in the sprites (even lighting effects) but that shit is 4 times more expensive than regular 3D models, the the paperman animation technique doesn't count as 2D animation, you can for it like GG:xrd but it costs you way more than the SF4 cell shading, the cheaper way to make 2D animation in fighting games is making flash-like puppets and somehow even that method is expensive

Well, yes, what I was wondering if it's the new animation has as many frames as, say, Skullgirls. But the moveset in the original game and the new pretty much 1:1 with the finished game probably having extra moves and animation here or there.
Also, more frames of animation is autistic and not needed, which is why Skullgirls is known to have flushed the money in something that wasn't truly that important and why there's so little characters other than Lab Zero losing the rights to it.
